HSK 4 Coordinate Complex Sentences: 不是……,而是…… (Not A, But Rather B)

不是……,而是…… rejects one account and presents another as the appropriate replacement. The speaker may correct an identity, action, explanation or interpretation; the grammar itself does not establish which account is objectively true.

Shared subject or topic 不是 Rejected possibility A (verb phrase, noun phrase, or reason) ,而是 Affirmed truth B (parallel phrase or clause)
Example sentence

这份文件不是经理签字的,而是秘书代签的。

Zhè fèn wénjiàn bú shì jīnglǐ qiānzì de, ér shì mìshū dàiqiān de.

This document was not signed by the manager, but rather signed on their behalf by the secretary.

The shared topic 这份文件 introduces two parallel agent-and-action phrases ending in 的. The contrast identifies who signed the document.

Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

In the HSK 4 grammar outline, 不是……,而是…… (bú shì... ér shì...) is classified under coordinate complex sentences (并列复句). Rather than simply listing two equal facts side by side, this pattern forms a contrastive coordination that pairs a negative statement with a positive one. It translates naturally into English as "not A, but rather B" or "it is not that A, but that B."

Speakers use this structure primarily for clarification and correction. When a listener holds a mistaken assumption about who did something, why an event happened, or what a situation entails, 不是……,而是…… directly rejects the false premise after 不是 and replaces it with the true explanation after 而是. Both halves address the exact same question or topic from opposite angles.

Sentence Structures and Word Order

Because this pattern coordinates two alternatives, the elements placed after 不是 and 而是 should be grammatically parallel whenever possible—such as two noun phrases, two verb phrases, two prepositional phrases, or two full clauses. The placement of the subject depends on whether the two clauses share the same subject.

Shared subject or topic 不是 Rejected possibility A (verb phrase, noun phrase, or reason) ,而是 Affirmed truth B (parallel phrase or clause)

With a shared subject or topic, a useful basic order places it before 不是. The contrasted elements may be noun phrases, verb or adjective phrases, or reasons introduced by 因为. They should answer the same contextual question; exact surface symmetry is helpful but not compulsory.

他去上海不是去旅游,而是去参加学术会议。

Tā qù Shànghǎi bú shì qù lǚyóu, ér shì qù cānjiā xuéshù huìyì.

He went to Shanghai not to travel, but to attend an academic conference.

Contrasts two parallel purpose verb phrases (去旅游 vs. 去参加学术会议) after a shared subject and action.

我们推迟比赛不是因为天气不好,而是因为场地需要维修。

Wǒmen tuīchí bǐsài bú shì yīnwèi tiānqì bù hǎo, ér shì yīnwèi chǎngdì xūyào wéixiū.

We postponed the match not because the weather was bad, but because the venue needed maintenance.

Uses parallel 因为 clauses after 不是 and 而是 to reject a false reason and state the real one.

不是 Rejected clause or assumption A ,而是 Affirmed clause or explanation B

When the two clauses have different subjects, or when the speaker wants to reject an entire situational assumption, 不是 stands at the very front of the first clause, and 而是 introduces the full second clause.

不是我不愿意帮你,而是这件事我真的做不了主。

Bú shì wǒ bú yuànyì bāng nǐ, ér shì zhè jiàn shì wǒ zhēn de zuòbuliǎo zhǔ.

It is not that I am unwilling to help you, but rather that I really cannot make the decision on this matter.

Places 不是 at the beginning of the sentence to negate an entire assumed situation before explaining the real constraint.

Pragmatic Nuances in Conversation and Writing

An explanation such as 不是我不愿意帮你,而是… can soften a refusal by addressing a possible interpretation before giving a constraint. That effect depends on delivery and context: a blunt correction can still sound confrontational.

  • Declarative focus: This pattern is overwhelmingly used in statements to assert a correction or explanation.
  • Questions and confirmation: the whole contrast can be queried, for example 不是时间不够,而是安排有问题吗? with an appropriate context and intonation. A confirmation-seeking question is not automatically rhetorical; 吧 can soften or seek agreement with an assessment.
  • Tone sandhi reminder: In standard pronunciation, 不 (bù) changes to the second tone (bú) before the fourth-tone syllable 是 (shì).

Key Contrast: 而是 vs. 但是 (And Common Learner Errors)

Because English speakers use the single word "but" for both corrective replacements and unexpected turns of thought, learners frequently confuse 而是 with 但是 (dànshì) or 可是 (kěshì). In Chinese, their functions are distinct:

  • 不是 A,而是 B rejects A and offers B as the relevant replacement. A and B need not be logically incompatible in every possible context: the contrast can concern the explanation or description that matters here.
  • 不是 A,但是 B (Adversative transition): "Not A" is an accepted background fact, and B introduces a contrasting or surprising follow-up statement rather than a replacement for A.

他不是本地人,但是对这里的街道非常熟悉。

Tā bú shì běndì rén, dànshì duì zhèlǐ de jiēdào fēicháng shúxī.

He is not a local, but he is very familiar with the streets here.

Correct contrast using 但是: "being familiar with the streets" does not replace "local" as an alternative identity; it states a surprising fact despite him not being local.

For this lesson’s explicit paired frame, 而是 is a clear starting choice. But Chinese also uses compressed contrasts with 而, particularly between parallel phrases, as the purpose example below shows. Do not turn the full-form model into a claim that every occurrence of 不是…而… is ungrammatical.

他努力工作不是为了奖金,而为了积累经验。

Tā nǔlì gōngzuò bú shì wèile jiǎngjīn, ér wèile jīlěi jīngyàn.

He works hard to gain experience, not for a bonus.

This more compressed written contrast uses 而 before a parallel 为了 phrase. The full form 而是为了积累经验 is also natural and displays the target pair explicitly. This does not mean that 是 can be omitted everywhere.

这个问题不是太难,而是时间不够。

Zhège wèntí bú shì tài nán, ér shì shíjiān bú gòu.

This problem is not too difficult; rather, there is not enough time.

The full marker 而是 clearly introduces the alternative explanation. Here the issue is lack of time rather than excessive difficulty.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 不是……,而是…… called a coordinate complex sentence (并列复句)?

In Chinese grammar classification, coordinate complex sentences include both additive patterns (listing things that are simultaneously true) and contrastive positive-negative patterns. Because 不是……,而是…… sets two parallel possibilities side by side—negating one and affirming the other on the same grammatical level—it belongs to the contrastive subtype of coordinate sentences.

Should I repeat prepositions or conjunctions like 因为 after 而是?

Repeating the key functional word (such as saying 不是因为……,而是因为…… or 不是为了……,而是为了……) makes the parallel structure clear and natural, especially when the clauses are long.

Can 而 ever be used without 是 in Chinese?

Yes. 而 can connect contrasting phrases or clauses without 是, including some negative–corrective contrasts. Compare 他努力工作不是为了奖金,而为了积累经验 with the fuller 而是为了积累经验. In this lesson, practise the transparent full pair first; whether a shorter form is natural depends on its construction and context.
