Explaining Causes and Results with 由于……,因此……
Use this causal compound sentence to explain why something happened or why a conclusion follows. Learn where the cause and result go, when 由于 may be omitted, and how the pattern differs from a bare 因此 connection.

Meaning: a stated reason and its consequence
This pattern links two related statements. The first clause gives the cause; the second gives the result. 由于 means “because of” or “since,” while 因此 means “therefore” or “as a result.” Together, they make the relationship explicit: cause first, consequence second. The outline includes the optional 由于 and places this pattern under causal compound sentences at HSK 4 level. This is the scope of the lesson, not a claim about which exam version every test center currently administers.
由于实验室的设备出了故障,因此今天的实验只能延期。
The first clause supplies the cause; 因此 introduces its consequence.
The equipment in the laboratory broke down, so today’s experiment can only be postponed. The result is a practical consequence of the equipment failure.
Form and word order
In this pattern, state the cause first and then introduce the result with 因此. 因此 can stand before an expressed result subject, as in 因此我们决定……, or after it, as in 我们因此决定……. This differs from the usual subject + 就 order in other patterns. 由于 normally introduces the cause; the cause can name an event, condition, or situation.
- With both markers: 由于 + cause, 因此 + result.
- With 由于 omitted: cause, 因此 + result. The cause still comes first, and 因此 still introduces the result.
- The pattern makes the relationship clear, but it does not mean every event that comes first caused the event that follows. The context should support the connection.
路上积水很多,因此我们决定改坐地铁。
由于 is omitted, but the cause-result order remains explicit.
There is a lot of standing water on the road, so we decided to take the subway instead. 由于 is omitted, but the cause-result order remains clear.
When the pattern is useful
Choose this pattern when you want to explain a decision, outcome, or conclusion and make its reason easy to follow. It is especially useful in organized explanations, reports, and careful spoken explanations. 因此 often gives the sentence a slightly more formal or deliberate feel than a simple connection with 所以. This is a tendency, not a rule that limits 因此 to writing. In conversation, speakers may prefer a shorter form, depending on the situation.
由于通知发得比较晚,因此有些同学没有及时看到。
The sentence explains a practical consequence, rather than asking a question.
Because the notice was sent rather late, some students did not see it in time. The sentence reports an explanatory reason and its consequence; it is not a question. A question can follow the same cause-result order if the speaker is asking about the result, but this pattern itself does not turn a statement into a question. Use question wording and punctuation when asking.
A useful contrast: 因此 and 所以
因此 and 所以 both introduce a result; 因此 often sounds more formal, while 所以 is common in everyday speech. Normally choose one instead of stacking 因此所以. The cause may appear in a previous sentence or in the same sentence without 由于: 路上积水很多,因此我们决定改坐地铁 already states it explicitly. Adding 由于 marks that first part as the cause; it does not create an otherwise missing reason.
这组数据还不完整,因此现在不能得出可靠的结论。
因此 introduces a conclusion supported by the stated limitation.
This set of data is still incomplete; therefore, we cannot draw a reliable conclusion now. The conclusion follows from the stated limitation.
Evaluate the cause in context
由于我昨天很忙,因此今天才交作业 is a valid explanation: the speaker presents yesterday’s workload as the reason for delayed submission. Being ill could also be a reason, but it is not the only acceptable one. 才 highlights a later-than-expected action; it does not conflict with having been busy the previous day.
由于我昨天很忙,因此今天才交作业。
A plausible explanation of delayed submission. Being busy can prevent earlier submission; 才 highlights that it happened later than expected.
Check the actual connection rather than rejecting an ordinary explanation. Compare “the road was blocked, therefore I arrived late” with “I wore blue, therefore I arrived late.” A blocked road supplies an understandable reason; clothing colour alone does not explain arrival time without further context. The connector states a relationship; it does not prove that relationship is true.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave out 由于?
Yes. The outline marks 由于 as optional. You can state the cause first and use 因此 to introduce the result. The context should make the cause-result connection clear.
Can I say 因此所以 before the result?
Normally choose one result marker: 因此 or 所以. Using both together is usually redundant for this pattern.
Can this pattern appear in a question?
Yes, a speaker can ask about a result, but the connector pattern does not make a sentence interrogative by itself. Use appropriate question wording and punctuation.
