HSK 4 Modal Adverbs: 也许 and 恐怕
Both 也许 and 恐怕 are modal adverbs used to express a speaker's conjecture or uncertainty, and both can appear either before the predicate or at the start of a clause. While 也许 expresses a neutral possibility ('perhaps'), 恐怕 conveys either a polite concern that something undesirable might happen ('I'm afraid that') or a confident estimate ('probably').

他也许已经知道这个消息了。
也许 stands between the subject 他 and the predicate to express a neutral guess.
× 她很恐怕黑,晚上不敢一个人出门。
Incorrect: 恐怕 is a modal adverb, so it cannot be modified by the degree adverb 很 or take the noun object 黑. Replace 恐怕 with the verb 害怕 (see “她很害怕黑,晚上不敢一个人出门。”).
Corrected example: 她很害怕黑,晚上不敢一个人出门。

What Are Modal Adverbs and How Do 也许 and 恐怕 Fit In?
In the Level 4 grammar outline, 也许 and 恐怕 are grouped together under word classes as modal adverbs (情态副词). Unlike adverbs of time or degree, modal adverbs show the speaker's attitude, judgment, or level of certainty toward a whole statement. Please note that level labels in this lesson refer to the supplied syllabus outline rather than a guarantee of what a specific test center currently administers.
Because they evaluate an entire situation rather than just modifying an action's manner, both 也许 and 恐怕 have flexible placement. They normally stand between the subject and the main verb or adjective, or they can move to the very beginning of the clause before the subject to set the tone for the whole sentence.
Using 也许 for Neutral Possibility
也许 means 'perhaps' or 'maybe'. It indicates that the speaker considers an outcome possible without leaning strongly toward a positive or negative emotion. It often pairs with modal verbs like 会 or 能, or with the sentence-final particle 吧, to keep the tone tentative.
他也许已经知道这个消息了。
也许 stands between the subject 他 and the predicate to express a neutral guess.
也许明天不会下雨。
也许 placed at the start of the clause before the time word 明天.
In everyday conversation, 也许 can also stand alone (often followed by 吧) as a brief, noncommittal response to someone else's question or suggestion.
也许吧,我们再等等看。
也许吧 used as a standalone conversational response.
Using 恐怕 for Concern, Polite Refusal, and Estimation
恐怕 has two closely related uses as a modal adverb. First, it means 'I'm afraid that...', introducing a prediction that the speaker views as inconvenient, undesirable, or apologetic. Second, it means 'probably' or 'I reckon', used when the speaker makes a fairly confident estimate about a quantity, time, or state based on experience.
再不走,我们恐怕要迟到了。
恐怕 expresses concern about an undesirable result.
对不起,今天我恐怕帮不了你。
恐怕 softens a refusal and makes the speaker sound polite and apologetic.
Do not assume 恐怕 only appears in bad situations. When estimating numbers, ages, or distances, 恐怕 simply marks an educated guess without any sense of worry.
这家店的历史恐怕有一百年了。
恐怕 used for a neutral estimate of quantity or duration, without fear or worry.
Key Contrasts Between 也许 and 恐怕
- Speaker attitude: 也许 is emotionally neutral and presents an open possibility. 恐怕 usually carries either mild regret/concern ('I'm afraid we can't make it') or a subjective assessment ('probably at least...').
- Social function: When declining an invitation or delivering unwelcome news, 恐怕 sounds much more considerate and polite than 也许, which can sound indifferent if used to turn someone down.
- Standalone replies: You can answer a question with 也许吧 ('Maybe'), whereas 恐怕 rarely stands completely alone without a following verb, adjective, or clause.
Common Learner Mistake: Treating 恐怕 as a Verb of Fear
Because the characters 恐 and 怕 both relate to fear, learners often mistake 恐怕 for a verb meaning 'to be afraid of' and place degree adverbs like 很 before it or attach a direct noun object after it. Under this syllabus point, 恐怕 functions strictly as a modal adverb. It cannot be modified by 很, and it cannot take a noun object like 'the dark' or 'dogs'. To express actual fear of a thing, use 害怕 or 怕 instead.
她很害怕黑,晚上不敢一个人出门。
Correct replacement: 害怕 is a verb/adjective that accepts 很 and takes the object 黑.
Frequently asked questions
Does the meaning change when 也许 or 恐怕 moves before the subject?
The core meaning stays the same. Putting 也许 or 恐怕 before the subject slightly highlights the speaker's uncertainty right from the start of the sentence, while placing it after the subject focuses first on the topic being discussed.
Is 恐怕 only used for bad news?
No. While it is very common for polite refusals and unwelcome predictions, it is also regularly used to estimate numbers, time, or degree (meaning 'probably' or 'I reckon') in completely neutral contexts.
Can 也许 and 恐怕 be used together in the same clause?
Usually choose one to keep the intended attitude clear. 也许 presents an open possibility; 恐怕 can express concern or an estimate. Stacking them without a clear reason can sound redundant, but this is a usage recommendation rather than a claim that they can never occur in the same clause.
