The 把 Pattern with Complements

In 主语+把+宾语+动词+补语, the complement can specify a result, a direction, or a description of manner, degree or state. The object is presented as something being handled; a state complement need not mean that the object was physically changed.

Subject 把 Affected object Verb Result, directional, or state complement
Example sentence

我把门关好了。

Wǒ bǎ mén guān hǎo le.

I closed the door properly.

好 is a result complement indicating that the closing has reached a satisfactory state in this report.

What this pattern expresses

The basic order is Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Complement. A result complement specifies what is achieved, a directional complement specifies movement, and a state description with 得 can show how the action is done or what condition results. These meanings are related but not identical.

Use it when the object is specific or already clear from context, and the speaker wants to say what was done to it. The action normally affects or handles the object in a meaningful way. The outline names three complement types for this pattern: result, direction, and state. They share the same broad position after the verb, but their meanings differ.

Build the sentence

Subject 把 Affected object Verb Result, directional, or state complement

After the 把 object, use Verb + Result/Directional Complement, or a state-description pattern such as Verb + 得 + Description. 了 can present a realized event in a positive report, as in 关好了; in a question it helps ask whether that event has occurred. The request 收拾得干净一点 does not need 了 to be complete.

A useful way to plan a sentence is to identify the object first: what is being changed, moved, or left in a state? Then choose a verb and a complement that describe the outcome. Do not treat 把 as a word meaning “do”; its role is to introduce the affected object within this sentence pattern.

Three complement types

好 and 完 give clear result examples here: 关好 describes closing properly, and 做完 describes completing the task. Some directional forms also have extended result meanings, so meaning alone does not always yield a unique category. Use these examples to learn a clear starting distinction.

我把门关好了。

Wǒ bǎ mén guān hǎo le.

I closed the door properly.

好 is a result complement indicating that the closing has reached a satisfactory state in this report.

她把作业做完了。

Tā bǎ zuòyè zuò wán le.

She finished the homework.

Result complement: 完 shows completion.

In 拿出去, 拿 names the carrying action and 出去 gives the direction from inside to outside, away from the relevant reference point. The 把 object is what is carried out.

他把旧报纸拿出去了。

Tā bǎ jiù bàozhǐ ná chūqu le.

He took the old newspapers outside.

出去 is a directional complement: 出 indicates inside to outside, while 去 presents movement away from the contextual reference point.

In 请把房间收拾得干净一点, the 得 phrase describes the desired clean condition. A state complement can also describe manner: 请把这段话读得慢一点 asks for slower reading; it does not say that the text itself must be transformed. Keep the 得 connector in these descriptive patterns.

请把房间收拾得干净一点。

Qǐng bǎ fángjiān shōushi de gānjìng yìdiǎn.

Please tidy the room so that it is a little cleaner.

State complement: 得干净一点 describes the resulting degree of tidiness.

Choosing it in context

The pattern can report a change, request an outcome or ask whether an outcome has occurred. The window question asks whether wiping has made the window clean. The complement stays after the verb; the question does not turn it into a claim that the result is already achieved.

你把窗户擦干净了吗?

Nǐ bǎ chuānghu cā gānjìng le ma?

Have you wiped the window clean?

擦 is the action and 干净 specifies the clean result. 吗 asks whether that result has been achieved; the question does not assert that it has.

Compare 我关好了门 with 我把门关好了. Both can report the same satisfactory closing result. 把 presents the identifiable door before the verb; ordinary word order can also contain a result complement. Choose the information order that suits the context, rather than assuming only 把 can express an outcome.

In an ordinary negative report, 没 can precede the 把 phrase: 我还没把作业做完. The complement 完 still specifies the completion being denied. This is different from the affirmative 她把作业做完了.

A practical check

Before using the pattern, check three things: Is the object clear and affected by the action? Does the verb have a complement? Does that complement show a result, a direction, or a state? If so, arrange the sentence as subject + 把 + object + verb + complement, then add an appropriate aspect marker or question form when the context calls for one. This check helps you express not just what someone did, but what happened to the object.

  • Result: say what the action accomplished.
  • Direction: say where or which way the object moved.
  • State: describe manner, degree or the condition associated with the action, using the appropriate descriptive frame.

Frequently asked questions

Does this pattern need a complement after the verb?

The outline point taught here specifically places a result, directional, or state complement after the verb. Choose a different sentence form if you have no such complement to express.

How can I tell the three complement types apart?

Look at both form and meaning. 做完 specifies completion; 拿出去 gives direction; 收拾得干净一点 uses 得 to describe a condition, while 读得慢一点 describes manner. Some directional forms have extended result meanings, so categories can overlap in interpretation.

Can I ask a question with this pattern?

Yes. Keep the order, as in 你把窗户擦干净了吗?. It asks whether the clean result has been achieved.
