Meaning: a condition is necessary
只有……才…… presents X as necessary for Y: Y is possible only if X holds. It does not state that X is the only requirement or that satisfying X guarantees Y. For example, careful review can be presented as required for passing, without claiming that review alone is sufficient.
Form and word order
只有 introduces the required condition. In the result clause, an expressed subject stands before 才: 我们才出去散步. A shared subject may also stand before 只有, as in 你只有认真复习,才能通过考试. 能 or 可以 may follow 才 to express possibility or permission; the construction does not require either modal in every sentence.
认真复习 is the required condition; passing is the result.
Having a key is presented as necessary for entry.
The rain stopping is the condition for going out.
When to use it
Choose the pattern when you want to emphasize a requirement: a person needs sufficient review to pass, a key is needed to enter, or the rain must stop before a walk can happen. The condition can describe an action, a state, or an event. The result may be a possibility, permission, or an event that follows.
More practice is presented as necessary for improvement.
The same pattern can appear in a question. A final 吗 turns it into a yes-or-no question asking whether the condition is required for the result. The example asks whether leaving now is necessary to arrive in time; it is not just a neutral question about departure time.
This asks whether leaving now is the necessary condition for arriving in time.
Contrast with 只要……,就……
The first says that without an invitation, entry is not allowed; it leaves open whether other requirements also apply. The second presents having an invitation as enough for entry in the stated context; it does not by itself say there is no other way to enter. Thus “required” and “enough” are different claims, even if both happen to hold in a particular situation.
- Ask: “Is this condition required for the result?” If yes, 只有……,才…… is a good choice.
- Ask: “Is meeting this condition enough to bring about the result?” If yes, consider
- The stated relationship is the speaker’s framing of the situation; real-world conditions may be more complex than one sentence expresses.
Frequently asked questions
Where should the subject go?
Place it where it belongs to the meaning. In 只有雨停了,我们才出去散步, 我们 is the subject of the result clause. A subject that applies to both clauses can also appear before 只有.
Does 只有……,才…… guarantee the result?
No. It states that the condition is necessary for the result, not that the result is certain once the condition is met.
Can this pattern be a question?
Yes. A final 吗 can ask whether the condition is required, as in the lesson’s question about leaving now to arrive in time.
