HSK 2 Result Complements 1: Verb + 错, 懂, 好, 会, 完

In Chinese, a single action verb often describes an activity without confirming its outcome. To state the specific result of an action, you attach a result complement (结果补语) directly after the main verb. This lesson covers the core HSK 2 pattern coupling an action verb with 错, 懂, 好, 会, or 完.

Subject Main Verb 错 / 懂 / 好 / 会 / 完 (了) ( Object )
Example sentence

对不起,我写错你的名字了。

Duìbuqǐ , wǒ xiě cuò nǐ de míngzi le .

Sorry, I wrote your name wrong.

写错 combines the action 写 (to write) with the result 错 (wrong/mistaken). The object 你的名字 follows the entire verb-complement unit.

A common mistake

× 我看了这本书完。

Wǒ kàn le zhè běn shū wán .

Intended: I finished reading this book.

Incorrect. The result complement 完 cannot be separated from the main verb 看 by 了 or the object 这本书. Replace with 我看完了这本书。

Corrected example: 我看完了这本书。

Grammatical Role and Core Word Order

In Mandarin Chinese, many basic action verbs only show that an effort or activity takes place. For example, 看 means to look or read, 听 means to listen, and 学 means to study. On their own, these verbs do not automatically guarantee that you finished reading, understood what you heard, or mastered what you studied. To express the outcome of the action, Chinese places a result complement (结果补语) immediately after the main verb. In the HSK Level 2 syllabus, the foundational group of result complements consists of the verb followed by 错, 懂, 好, 会, or 完.

Subject Main Verb 错 / 懂 / 好 / 会 / 完 (了) ( Object )

In the direct result form taught here, keep the main verb and complement together: 看完. An object normally follows the unit or is made a topic before it; verbal 了 follows the complement rather than separating 看 from 完. The related potential forms 看得懂 and 看不懂 insert 得/不 to express ability, which is a different construction.

我看完了这本书。

Wǒ kàn wán le zhè běn shū .

I finished reading this book.

Correct. The complement 完 attaches directly to 看, followed by 了 and then the direct object 这本书.

The Five Result Complements in Detail

Although all five words occupy the exact same grammatical slot right after the verb, each one expresses a distinct type of outcome. You choose the complement based on the specific result you want to report.

  • Verb + 错 (cuò): Indicates that an action was performed incorrectly or by mistake. It shows that the result deviates from what is right or intended, such as saying the wrong word (说错), writing a character wrong (写错), or buying the wrong item (买错).
  • Verb + 懂 (dǒng): Indicates comprehension gained through a receptive action. It almost always pairs with verbs of perception or study, especially 听懂 (to understand by listening) and 看懂 (to understand by reading or watching).
  • Verb + 好 (hǎo): Indicates that an action is completed to a satisfactory, ready, or settled state. Unlike 完, which simply means an activity ended, 好 emphasizes that the task is properly prepared or successfully settled, such as 做好 (cooked and ready), 准备好 (prepared and ready), or 商量好 (discussed and agreed upon).
  • Verb + 会 (huì) expresses acquiring the ability to do something through learning or practice, most commonly in 学会. It does not by itself mean expert-level mastery.
  • Verb + 完 (wán): Indicates that an action has reached its end or that an item has been completely used up or finished. Common combinations include 吃完 (finish eating), 做完 (finish doing), 看完 (finish reading/watching), and 说完 (finish speaking).

对不起,我写错你的名字了。

Duìbuqǐ , wǒ xiě cuò nǐ de míngzi le .

Sorry, I wrote your name wrong.

写错 combines the action 写 (to write) with the result 错 (wrong/mistaken). The object 你的名字 follows the entire verb-complement unit.

这句话的意思我没有听懂。

Zhè jù huà de yìsi wǒ méiyǒu tīng dǒng .

I did not understand the meaning of this sentence.

听懂 shows comprehension gained by listening. Because the object 这句话的意思 is placed at the front as the topic, 没有听懂 stands at the end without 了.

晚饭已经做好了,快来吃吧。

Wǎnfàn yǐjīng zuò hǎo le , kuài lái chī ba .

Dinner is already cooked and ready; come and eat quickly.

做好 indicates not just that cooking stopped, but that the meal is satisfactorily prepared and ready to eat.

妹妹上个月学会了游泳。

Mèimei shàng gè yuè xué huì le yóuyǒng .

My younger sister learned how to swim last month.

学会 shows that the study or practice resulted in acquiring a new skill. 了 sits immediately after 学会 and before the object 游泳.

你看完这本书以后请还给我。

Nǐ kàn wán zhè běn shū yǐhòu qǐng huán gěi wǒ .

After you finish reading this book, please return it to me.

看完 expresses reaching the end of reading the book. It can be used in future or sequence clauses to mean once the action is completed.

Negation and Questions

To deny that a result was achieved in a particular situation, use 没(有) before the verb–result unit: 没听懂 or 没看完. Drop verbal aspect 了 from that negative form. This is not a past-tense rule, nor a ban on every sentence-final 了 serving a different function.

Subject 没(有) Main Verb 错 / 懂 / 好 / 会 / 完 ( Object )

To ask whether a result has been achieved, you can add 吗 to the end of an affirmative sentence (for example, 你做完了吗?) or place 没有 at the very end of the sentence (for example, 你听懂了没有?).

Distinguishing Result Complements from Neighbouring Structures

First, learners often ask how Verb + 好 differs from Verb + 完. Both can translate to finishing an action in English, but their focus is different. Verb + 完 focuses purely on termination—reaching the end of a process or quantity (such as finishing a book with 看完). Verb + 好 focuses on readiness, quality, and satisfactory completion (such as 准备好, meaning everything is prepared and ready for the next step). If you quickly scribble answers just to reach the end of a test, you have 写完, but perhaps not 写好.

Second, do not confuse these result complements with two other complement types that appear after verbs in Chinese:

  • A direct result complement attaches without structural 得, as in 写好 or 写错. In 写得很好 or 写得很慢, 得 introduces an evaluation of manner, quality or degree. Such an evaluation can concern a past single event as well as a present or habitual action; the contrast is not past versus ongoing time.
  • In their basic spatial uses, directional complements such as 来、去、进、出 and their compounds locate movement relative to a direction or viewpoint. They also have extended uses beyond literal space. The target complements 错、懂、好、会、完 describe an outcome rather than specifying a spatial direction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put the object between the verb and the result complement?

Not in the direct verb–result form: say 看完这本书, not 看这本书完. An object can also be placed before the unit as a topic. This restriction concerns the object; potential 得/不 can occur between the verb and complement in a different pattern.

What is the difference between 我听了 and 我听懂了?

我听了 only states that you performed the action of listening. It does not say whether you understood the message. 我听懂了 adds the result complement 懂 to confirm that your listening resulted in comprehension.

When should I use 学会 instead of just 学?

学 describes studying or taking lessons. 学会 states that learning has led to an ability: you now know how to do it. The level of proficiency depends on context; 学会 alone does not guarantee expertise.
