Alternative Questions with 还是 (háishì): Asking "Or" in Chinese
还是 connects alternatives when asking which option applies or is preferred. A useful reply names an option or explains that both, neither or another choice is wanted; a plain “yes” normally does not identify a choice.

你想喝茶还是喝咖啡?
Correct: 还是 (háishì) links two parallel verb-object phrases in a direct choice question.
× 你想喝茶或者喝咖啡?
For a direct request to choose tea versus coffee, use 还是 as in the model. With 或者 and suitable intonation, the sentence may instead ask whether either drink is wanted. That is a different question, not a rule that 或者 can never occur in a question.
Corrected example: 你想喝茶还是喝咖啡?

What Is an Alternative Question with 还是 (háishì)?
In the HSK 2 grammar outline, alternative questions connected by 还是 (háishì) are classified under interrogative sentence types (疑问句).
English uses the single word "or" in both questions ("Do you want tea or coffee?") and statements ("Tea or coffee is fine"). Mandarin separates these two jobs clearly. When you are asking a question that presents two or more alternatives for the listener to choose from, you link those options with 还是 (háishì). Because the speaker is asking "which one", the listener cannot simply answer "yes" or "no".
你想喝茶还是喝咖啡?
Correct: 还是 (háishì) links two parallel verb-object phrases in a direct choice question.
Three Common Ways to Build 还是 (háishì) Questions
The golden rule for placing 还是 (háishì) is balance: the two items on either side of 还是 (háishì) should play the same grammatical role. Depending on what is being compared, you can link two objects, two verb phrases, or two clauses with different subjects.
When the subject and the main verb stay the same—especially with linking verbs like 是 (shì) or verbs of preference—you can state the verb once and place 还是 (háishì) directly between the two noun or time options.
你的生日是今天还是明天?
Correct: The linking verb 是 (shì) is stated once before the two time nouns today and tomorrow.
When the choice involves two different actions, methods, or destinations, place 还是 (háishì) between the two complete verb phrases. Notice in the earlier drink example that repeating the verb 喝 (hē, to drink) on both sides sounds very natural in spoken Chinese.
我们坐公共汽车去还是走路去?
Correct: 还是 (háishì) connects two different methods of transport.
If the question compares two different people doing an action, 还是 (háishì) connects the two full clauses. Speakers frequently add 是 (shì) right before the first subject to highlight that the person is the focus of the choice.
是姐姐去买菜还是我去买菜?
Correct: Adding 是 (shì) at the start emphasizes that the choice is between two different subjects.
Key Contrast: 还是 (háishì) vs. 或者 (huòzhě)
The most frequent obstacle for learners is choosing between 还是 (háishì) and 或者 (huòzhě). Both translate to "or" in English, but they belong to different sentence types:
- Use 还是 (háishì) in alternative questions when asking someone to pick between options (whether in a direct question or an embedded question like "I don't know whether A or B").
- Use 或者 (huòzhě) in declarative statements when saying that either option is possible or acceptable.
- Do not use 或者 (huòzhě) to ask the listener to choose between A and B.
茶或者咖啡都可以。
Correct contrast: Because this sentence is a statement rather than a question, 或者 (huòzhě) is the right word for "or".
Sentence-Final Particles: Why 吗 (ma) Does Not Belong Here
Do not add 吗 to the same direct alternative question: 生日是今天还是明天? already asks which day. This is not a ban on 吗 anywhere in a longer sentence containing 还是. For example, 你知道他今天来还是明天来吗? is a yes–no question about whether the listener knows the answer to an embedded choice.
× 你的生日是今天还是明天吗?
Incorrect: Never add the yes-no question particle 吗 (ma) to a sentence that already asks a choice question with 还是 (háishì). Use “你的生日是今天还是明天?” instead.
Corrected example: 你的生日是今天还是明天?
呢 is optional in the direct alternative frame. It may connect the question to an ongoing topic or give it conversational emphasis; it does not guarantee a softer or more polite tone in every situation.
明天上午你去医院还是去公司呢?
Correct: The optional particle 呢 (ne) can sit at the end of a 还是 (háishì) question to soften the inquiry.
How to Answer a 还是 (háishì) Question Naturally
For a normal alternative question, a bare 是 or 不是 usually does not make your choice clear. Choose an option, say that either is fine, or explain that you want neither or something else. If the question rests on a mistaken assumption, you can also correct that assumption.
- Pick one option directly: Repeat the verb and object you prefer, such as 喝茶 (hē chá, drink tea), or simply name the item if the context is clear.
- Say either option works: Use 都行 (dōu xíng) or 都可以 (dōu kěyǐ) to mean "either is fine / both are okay", optionally preceded by connecting the options with 或者 (huòzhě).
- Reject both or give a third option: Say 都不想喝 (dōu bù xiǎng hē, I don't want to drink either) and state what you actually want instead.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to repeat the verb after 还是 (háishì)?
Not always. With a shared verb, 你想喝茶还是咖啡? and 你想喝茶还是喝咖啡? are both natural. Repetition can make longer alternatives easier to compare, while a shared verb keeps a short question concise. If the verbs differ, keep enough of each phrase to make the choice clear.
Can I use 还是 (háishì) with three options?
Yes. If you offer three choices in a question, pause briefly (or use a comma in writing) between the first and second options, and place 还是 (háishì) between the second and third options, just like "A, B, or C?" in English.
Which word do I use in sentences like "I don't know if he is coming today or tomorrow"?
Even though the whole sentence ends with a period, the clause "whether he is coming today or tomorrow" is still an embedded choice question. Therefore, you must use 还是 (háishì), not 或者 (huòzhě).
