HSK 2 Compound Directional Complements: Literal Movement with Action Verbs

Compound directional complements combine a path word with 来 or 去, as in 出来 and 进去. 来/去 usually relate movement to a viewpoint, often the speaker’s location or a location adopted in context. The conventional form 起来, as in 站起来, describes rising and need not mean movement toward the speaker.

Subject Action Verb Path Direction (出/进/上/下/回/过/起) Viewpoint direction (来 / 去; see 起来 exception)
Example sentence

小狗从房间里跑出来了。

xiǎo gǒu cóng fángjiān lǐ pǎo chūlái le .

The puppy ran out from inside the room (toward me).

Verb 跑 (run) + 出来 (out toward the speaker). The speaker is outside the room watching the puppy come out.

A common mistake

× 哥哥跑回去学校了。

gēge pǎo huíqù xuéxiào le .

Intended: My older brother ran back to school.

Incorrect: A location object like 学校 cannot follow the full compound 回去. It must split the complement, as shown in the correct replacement example.

Corrected example: 哥哥跑回学校去了。

Grammatical Role and Core Formation

In the HSK 2 grammar outline, compound directional complements (复合趋向补语) are sentence elements placed immediately after a main action verb to specify the literal physical trajectory of that action. While English usually expresses this with an action verb plus a preposition or adverb (such as walk out, run back, or carry up), Mandarin combines the manner of motion and a two-part directional complement into a tight verb-complement predicate.

Subject Action Verb Path Direction (出/进/上/下/回/过/起) Viewpoint direction (来 / 去; see 起来 exception)

In forms such as 出来, the first part gives the path and 来/去 relates it to a reference viewpoint. Learn the thirteen combinations listed below rather than generating every possible pairing. 起来 is a conventional rising form: standing up does not require moving closer to the speaker.

The Thirteen Compound Forms and Spatial Groupings

This syllabus point covers thirteen specific compound directional complements used in their literal directional sense. Twelve of them form symmetrical pairs with 来 and 去, while 起来 stands alone because 起 only pairs with 来.

  • Boundary movement (Out vs. In): 出来 (out toward the speaker) and 出去 (out away from the speaker); 进来 (in toward the speaker) and 进去 (in away from the speaker).
  • Vertical movement (Up vs. Down): 上来 (up toward the speaker) and 上去 (up away from the speaker); 下来 (down toward the speaker) and 下去 (down away from the speaker).
  • Crossing or approaching, and returning: 过来 / 过去 and 回来 / 回去. These describe movement relative to a reference point; they are not restricted to horizontal travel. 走过来 can simply mean “walk over here”, without crossing a road or other physical obstacle.
  • Upward rising movement: 起来 (rising upward from a lower, sitting, or lying position). Unlike 上, which focuses on reaching a higher destination or surface, 起 focuses on leaving the starting base, and there is no compound form pairing 起 with 去.

小狗从房间里跑出来了。

xiǎo gǒu cóng fángjiān lǐ pǎo chūlái le .

The puppy ran out from inside the room (toward me).

Verb 跑 (run) + 出来 (out toward the speaker). The speaker is outside the room watching the puppy come out.

老师走近教室,慢慢走进去。

lǎoshī zǒu jìn jiàoshì , mànmàn zǒu jìnqù .

The teacher walked up to the classroom and slowly walked inside (away from me).

Verb 走 (walk) + 进去 (in away from the speaker). The speaker is outside the classroom.

我们把这张桌子搬上去吧。

wǒmen bǎ zhè zhāng zhuōzi bān shàngqù ba .

Let's carry this table up there.

Verb 搬 (move/carry) + 上去 (up away from current lower location). Using 把 keeps the object before the verb so 上去 stays together.

猫从树上跳下来。

māo cóng shù shàng tiào xiàlái .

The cat jumped down from the tree (toward here).

Verb 跳 (jump) + 下来 (down toward the speaker on the ground).

他看到我,就走过来,没有跑回去。

tā kàndào wǒ , jiù zǒu guòlái , méiyǒu pǎo huíqù .

When he saw me, he walked over here and didn't run back there.

Contrasts 走过来 (“walk over here”) with 跑回去 (“run back there”). 过来 need not mean crossing a physical barrier.

大家听到声音,都站起来。

dàjiā tīngdào shēngyīn , dōu zhàn qǐlái .

Hearing the sound, everyone stood up.

Verb 站 (stand) + 起来 (upward from a sitting or lower position).

Word Order and Object Position Restrictions

When the sentence includes an object, word order depends strictly on whether that object is a location/destination or a movable thing. Learners frequently make errors by treating compound directional complements as inseparable words.

Subject Action Verb Path Direction (出/进/上/下/回/过/起) Place Object Viewpoint direction (来 / 去; see 起来 exception)

Rule 1: Place and destination objects must split the compound. If the object is a place (such as 教室 classroom, 学校 school, or 楼上 upstairs), it must be inserted directly between the path verb (进, 出, 上, 下, 回, 过) and the vantage verb (来 or 去). Placing a location object after 来 or 去 is ungrammatical.

哥哥跑回学校去了。

gēge pǎo huí xuéxiào qù le .

My older brother ran back to school.

Correct: The destination object 学校 (school) is placed between 回 and 去.

× 哥哥跑回去学校了。

gēge pǎo huíqù xuéxiào le .

Intended: My older brother ran back to school.

Incorrect: A location object like 学校 cannot follow the full compound 回去. It must split the complement, as shown in the correct replacement example.

Corrected example: 哥哥跑回学校去了。

Subject Action Verb Path Direction (出/进/上/下/回/过/起) Movable Thing Object Viewpoint direction (来 / 去; see 起来 exception)

With a moved object, both 拿出一本书来 and 拿出来一本书 are possible. The best position depends on the verb and how the object is introduced or emphasized; do not assume every noun phrase can be freely moved between the two positions. 把 offers another useful pattern for a specific object, as in 把这张桌子搬上去.

妈妈买回来一些水果,弟弟拿出一本书来。

māma mǎi huílái yìxiē shuǐguǒ , dìdi ná chū yì běn shū lái .

Mom bought and brought back some fruit, and my younger brother took out a book.

Shows both valid positions for a movable thing object: 水果 follows 买回来, while 一本书 splits 拿出来 into 拿出一本书来.

Distinguishing Neighbouring Complements and Meanings

To use compound directional complements accurately at HSK 2, you must distinguish them from closely related complement types in the syllabus and keep focus on their literal directional meaning.

  • Compound vs. Simple Directional Complements: Simple directional complements attach only one directional word to the verb—either just 来/去 (such as 走来 walk toward here) or just a path verb like 上/下/进/出/过/回 (such as 走进教室 walk into the classroom). A compound directional complement combines both layers (such as 走进来 or 走进教室来) to show both the spatial boundary crossed and the speaker's vantage point at the same time.
  • Directional vs. State Complements (状态补语): A directional complement attaches directly to the verb with no particle to show where the subject or object moves (跑出去 run out). A state complement uses the structural particle 得 plus an adjective phrase (such as 跑得很快 run very fast) to evaluate or describe the manner or state of the action.
  • Directional vs. Duration/Quantity Complements (数量补语): Duration complements follow the verb to state how long an action lasts (such as 走了十分钟 walked for ten minutes), whereas compound directional complements specify spatial trajectory.
  • Literal Direction vs. Extended Metaphorical Meanings: At higher proficiency levels, compound forms like 起来, 出来, or 下去 often express abstract aspectual or metaphorical meanings (such as beginning an action, recognizing something, or continuing an action). This HSK 2 grammar point focuses strictly on literal physical movement through space.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there 起来 in this list, but no 起去?

起来 is an established compound in this set; 起去 is not its standard counterpart. In 站起来, 起来 marks rising rather than approaching the speaker. Use 上去 when the intended path is going up to a higher location away from the reference point; the choice is a conventional lexical contrast, not a rule that all rising must be toward someone.

How do I know whether to split the compound directional complement with an object?

Check whether the object is a place or a movable item. If it is a place or destination (like 房间 room or 学校 school), you must split the complement and put the place before 来 or 去 (走回房间去). If it is a physical object being moved (like 一本书 a book), you can either split the complement (拿出一本书来) or put the object after the whole compound (拿出来一本书).

When should I use a compound directional complement instead of a simple one?

Use a simple directional complement when you only need to state the path (走出房间 walk out of the room) OR only the speaker's perspective (走来 walk here). Use a compound directional complement when you want to express both the spatial path and whether the movement comes toward or goes away from the speaker in a single phrase (走出来 walk out toward here).
