Using 一……就…… for events that follow quickly

一……就…… connects two events and presents the second as happening immediately or soon after the first. Learn its basic order, natural contexts, and the difference between this pattern and 就 alone.

一 First event’s predicate after 一 ,就 Following event’s predicate after 就
Example sentence

我一到家,就给妈妈打电话。

Wǒ yí dào jiā, jiù gěi māma dǎ diànhuà。

As soon as I get home, I call Mom.

The first event is arriving home; the call follows right away. The present tense can describe a routine.

Meaning: as soon as one event happens

The HSK 2 outline lists 一……就…… under compact compound sentences. This lesson focuses on that listed pattern. In ordinary use, 一……就…… presents event B as happening immediately, or very soon, after event A. The speaker treats A as the point that triggers or marks the start of B. The events may be routine, planned, or simply observed; the pattern itself does not say that A is the deeper reason for B. (Source: hsk-2-g071.)

我一到家,就给妈妈打电话。

Wǒ yí dào jiā, jiù gěi māma dǎ diànhuà。

As soon as I get home, I call Mom.

The first event is arriving home; the call follows right away. The present tense can describe a routine.

In this example, arriving home comes first, and calling Mom follows right away. The sentence can describe a habit or a particular occasion; context tells you which. English translations such as “as soon as I get home” or “when I get home, I immediately…” capture the timing. “Once” can work too, though it may sound less immediate.

Build the sentence in event order

一 First event’s predicate after 一 ,就 Following event’s predicate after 就

A clear full model is Subject A + 一 + Predicate A,Subject B + 就 + Predicate B. Put the subjects before their respective markers: 雨一停,我们就出去散步. When one subject applies to both events, it can appear once before 一: 我一到家就给妈妈打电话. The shorter displayed formula omits subjects; it does not tell you to insert a subject after 一 or 就.

  • 一 comes directly before the first event: 一到家 (arrive home), 一停 (stop), 一看见 (see), 一进教室 (enter the classroom).
  • 就 comes before the second event: 就打电话 (call), 就出去散步 (go out for a walk), 就笑了 (smiled), 就安静下来 (became quiet).
  • The second event often follows quickly, but the exact interval depends on context. The pattern does not require the two events to be physically instantaneous.

雨一停,我们就出去散步。

Yǔ yì tíng, wǒmen jiù chūqu sànbù。

As soon as the rain stops, we’ll go out for a walk.

The future plan is tied to the rain stopping; 就 marks the next event.

Here the rain stopping is followed by the speakers going for a walk. The plan may have been made earlier; the sentence highlights when they set off. A natural situation is a conversation about what people will do once the weather clears.

Use it for a quick reaction or response

她一看见老朋友,就笑了。

Tā yí kànjiàn lǎo péngyou, jiù xiào le。

As soon as she saw her old friend, she smiled.

This describes a quick reaction after recognizing or seeing the friend.

Seeing the old friend is immediately followed by smiling. This is a natural way to describe a visible reaction. The second event can be an action, a change of state, or a response. It need not be something the subject consciously plans.

老师一进教室,学生们就安静下来。

Lǎoshī yí jìn jiàoshì, xuéshengmen jiù ānjìng xiàlai。

As soon as the teacher entered the classroom, the students quieted down.

The sentence describes closely linked events in sequence; it does not specify a spoken command.

The teacher’s entering the classroom is followed by the students becoming quiet. The sentence reports a sequence and suggests a close connection in time. It does not prove that the teacher ordered them to be quiet; that information would need to come from context.

Contrast with 就 alone

就 can appear without 一…… and has several uses, including indicating that something happens soon or earlier than expected. By itself, 就 does not automatically state the two-event relationship expressed by 一……就……. Compare the meanings in context: 一到家就打电话 links arriving home directly to calling; 到家就打电话 may also mean “call when you get home,” but without the same explicit paired pattern. Do not call the latter ungrammatical: it is a possible sentence with a different framing.

  • Use 一……就…… when you want to foreground the first event as the immediate timing point for the second.
  • Use 就 alone when it suits the sentence’s intended meaning and the surrounding context makes the timing clear.
  • Do not read this pattern as automatically meaning “because A, therefore B.” Its central contribution here is close sequence; speakers may imply a practical connection, but the pattern does not by itself state a full reason.

Questions, negatives, and a practical check

A question can retain the same pattern: 你一到家就给妈妈打电话吗? asks whether that immediate sequence is what the listener does. 吗 supplies the yes/no question; 一…就… still links the events. Context can make the question about a routine or a particular expected occasion.

Negation depends on scope. 我一回家就不想出门 describes becoming unwilling to go out as soon as one gets home; 不 negates 想出门. To deny that a call is immediate, 到家以后不马上打电话 expresses a different claim. Do not place 不 by a mechanical rule without deciding what it negates.

  • Identify the two events and put the earlier one after 一.
  • Put 就 before the event that follows.
  • Check that the context supports immediate or fairly close sequence.
  • Translate for meaning, not word by word: “as soon as A, B” is often natural.

Frequently asked questions

Does 一……就…… always mean that the second event happens at the exact same moment?

No. It usually presents the second event as following immediately or soon after the first, but the exact interval depends on the situation.

Does this pattern mean “because A, B”?

Not by itself. It foregrounds close sequence and can suggest a practical connection, but it does not necessarily state a deeper cause.

Do I need to repeat the subject in both parts?

Only when clarity calls for it. One subject can cover both events when it naturally applies to both; state a changed subject where needed.
