HSK 2 Frequency Adverbs: Using 常 and 经常 Naturally

常 and 经常 both mean “often/frequently”. In the basic patterns here, they precede the action phrase. 不常 and 不经常 mean “not often”; use them to describe habits and repeated activities.

Subject 常 Verb Object
Example sentence

奶奶常去公园。

Nǎinai cháng qù gōngyuán.

Grandma often goes to the park.

常 sits directly before the single-syllable verb 去.

A common mistake

× 我吃面条经常。

Wǒ chī miàntiáo jīngcháng.

Intended: I often eat noodles.

Incorrect: Placing 经常 at the end of the sentence after the object copies English word order and is ungrammatical in Mandarin. Replace with 我经常吃面条。

Corrected example: 我经常吃面条。

Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

In the HSK Level 2 grammar outline, 常 and 经常 are introduced together as frequency adverbs (频率副词). Both words express that an action happens often, regularly, or at short intervals over a period of time. When you want to move beyond describing single events and start talking about your routines, hobbies, or regular habits, these two adverbs are your primary tools.

Sentence Structure and Word Order

In Mandarin, adverbs of frequency must come before the verb they modify, not after the object. In a standard sentence, both 常 and 经常 stand after the subject (and any general time word like weekend or evening) and directly before the action verb.

Subject 常 Verb Object

奶奶常去公园。

Nǎinai cháng qù gōngyuán.

Grandma often goes to the park.

常 sits directly before the single-syllable verb 去.

Subject 经常 Verb Object

他周末经常打篮球。

Tā zhōumò jīngcháng dǎ lánqiú.

He often plays basketball on weekends.

Time words like 周末 appear before the frequency adverb 经常.

If the sentence includes a prepositional phrase indicating location (with 在) or a companion (with 跟 or 和), the frequency adverb usually goes before that prepositional phrase so that it scopes over the entire activity.

哥哥常在家做饭。

Gēge cháng zài jiā zuòfàn.

My older brother often cooks at home.

常 is placed before the location phrase 在家 so that it modifies the whole activity of cooking at home.

Comparing 常 and 经常: Rhythm and Flexibility

In most everyday affirmative sentences, 常 and 经常 are interchangeable in meaning. However, because 常 has one syllable and 经常 has two, they behave slightly differently in natural Chinese rhythm and sentence grammar.

  • Syllable rhythm: 常 is concise and pairs very smoothly with single-syllable verbs (such as 常去, 常来, 常看, or 常吃) in brisk spoken Mandarin. 经常 has a fuller two-syllable weight that pairs naturally with both one-syllable and two-syllable verbs.
  • Both 常有朋友来我家 and 经常有朋友来我家 are possible. A one-syllable adverb need not be banned from an existential sentence just because it is short.
  • This lesson practises the frequency-adverb use before predicates. 经常 also has other uses in expressions such as 经常性工作 (“regular work”), but do not build a modifier by adding 的 mechanically to every frequency word.

经常有朋友来我家。

Jīngcháng yǒu péngyou lái wǒ jiā.

Friends often come to my house.

经常 can begin an existential sentence before 有. 常 can also do this: 常有朋友来我家 is possible. Do not use this sentence to claim that 常 is banned at the start of a clause.

Negation and Usage Limits

To negate how often a habit occurs, use 不常 or 不经常 (“not often”). This is different from 经常不... or 经常没..., which say that a negative situation happens often. For example, 他经常没吃早饭就出门 means he often leaves without having eaten breakfast; 没 is inside the activity, not a mechanical replacement for 不 in 不经常.

Subject 不 常 / 经常 Verb Object

我晚上不常喝咖啡。

Wǒ wǎnshang bù cháng hē kāfēi.

I do not often drink coffee in the evening.

不常 is a compact, natural way to express “not often” here.

妹妹不经常看电视。

Mèimei bù jīngcháng kàn diànshì.

My younger sister does not watch TV often.

不经常 is also fully natural for negating habitual frequency.

Keep in mind an important grammatical limit: when negation or degree adverbs are involved, placement matters. To say not often, put 不 before the adverb (不常 or 不经常). Also, avoid combining 常 or 经常 with the completion particle 了 for a single one-off event, since frequency adverbs require repeatable actions.

Common Learner Mistake: Sentence-Final Placement

English speakers frequently place the word often at the very end of a sentence (for example, I eat noodles often). Translating this word order directly into Mandarin produces an ungrammatical sentence. In Chinese, neither 常 nor 经常 can stand at the end of a clause after the verb and object.

我经常吃面条。

Wǒ jīngcháng chī miàntiáo.

I often eat noodles.

Correct replacement: Place 经常 after the subject 我 and before the verb 吃.

Always check that your frequency adverb sits firmly in the pre-verbal slot between the subject and the predicate.

Frequently asked questions

Does 经常 represent a higher frequency than 常?

No. Both words express the same degree of frequency (often). The difference is rhythmic and grammatical: 常 is a single-syllable word that binds tightly to verbs and is very common in the negative form 不常, while 经常 is a two-syllable word that can be used in slightly more varied sentence positions.

Should time words like 周末 or 晚上 go before or after 常 and 经常?

Often place a general time frame before the frequency adverb: 我周末经常运动. Other orders can change the scope or emphasis, so this is a useful basic pattern rather than the only possible position for every time phrase.

What about 常常?

常常 is another common two-syllable word meaning often, closely related to 常. However, in the supplied HSK Level 2 grammar syllabus row for frequency adverbs, the specified target items are 常 and 经常.
