HSK 2 Adjective Reduplication: AA and AABB Patterns
AA and AABB are common adjective reduplication patterns covered in this HSK 2 lesson. They can make descriptions more vivid or expressive. Which adjectives allow a pattern, and the exact effect of repetition, depend on the word and context.

小猫有大大的眼睛。
AA + 的 modifies the noun 眼睛 (eyes), adding an affectionate, vivid tone.
× 她的房间很干干净净。
Incorrect: Reduplicated adjectives already express degree and cannot be modified by 很 (hěn). Replace with 她的房间干干净净的 or 她的房间很干净.
Corrected example: 她的房间干干净净的。

What Adjective Reduplication Does
In Mandarin Chinese, repeating the syllables of an adjective is called adjective reduplication (形容词重叠). In the supplied HSK 2 syllabus outline, this point covers two core patterns: AA for single-syllable adjectives and AABB for two-syllable adjectives. Note that level labels reflect the supplied teaching outline rather than a guarantee of what every individual test center administers.
A reduplicated adjective can make a state more vivid, expressive, or noticeable, sometimes with an affectionate tone. A plain adjective can be subjective too, and reduplication does not always mean a stronger degree. Learn the meaning of common forms in context rather than equating repetition with “very”.
Single-Syllable Adjectives: The AA Pattern
Some common one-syllable adjectives have an established AA form, including 大, 小, 红, 绿, 长, 高, and 慢. In the noun-modifying and predicate patterns practised below, use AA + 的, as in 大大的眼睛 or 红红的. Whether 的 appears in other functions depends on the construction.
小猫有大大的眼睛。
AA + 的 modifies the noun 眼睛 (eyes), adding an affectionate, vivid tone.
这个苹果红红的,很好看。
Here 红红的 acts directly as the predicate without 很 or 是.
春天的草绿绿的。
A monosyllabic color adjective reduplicated as AA + 的 at the end of a sentence.
Two-Syllable Adjectives: The AABB Pattern
For an adjective that accepts the AABB pattern, double each syllable separately: AB becomes AABB. For example, 干净 (gān jìng, clean) becomes 干干净净 (gān gān jìng jìng), 高兴 (gāo xìng, happy) becomes 高高兴兴 (gāo gāo xìng xìng), 清楚 (qīng chǔ, clear) becomes 清清楚楚 (qīng qīng chǔ chǔ), and 漂亮 (piào liang, pretty) becomes 漂漂亮亮 (piào piào liàng liàng).
她的房间干干净净的。
Correct AABB predicate formed from 干净 (gān jìng) plus 的.
AABB forms are also very common as adverbials before a verb (usually with 地) or as complements after a verb with 得 (de), where they describe the manner or resulting state of an action.
孩子们高高兴兴地回家了。
Correct AABB adverbial phrase modifying the verb 回家 (go home).
请把名字写得清清楚楚。
AABB used after 得 as a complement of degree/result.
Important Restrictions and Common Mistakes
The descriptive patterns practised here have common usage restrictions. For plain statements, do not mechanically add 很 to a reduplicated form or build its ordinary negative by simply prefixing 不. These are beginner patterns, not a ban on every negative word anywhere in a clause containing reduplication.
- No degree adverbs: Never put words like 很 (hěn, very), 太 (tài, too), 非常 (fēi cháng, extremely), or 最 (zuì, most) before an AA or AABB adjective.
- For an ordinary negative assessment, use the base form 不干净. Broader constructions can negate manner or an instruction, so this preference is not a universal ban on reduplication within negative language.
- No comparative sentences: Reduplicated adjectives describe a subjective, vivid state and cannot be used as the main predicate in 比 (bǐ) comparison structures.
- For 高兴 describing how the children go home, use 高高兴兴地. Do not infer that all adjectives must use AABB: other word-specific patterns exist, including adjective ABAB forms such as 雪白雪白. 高兴高兴 can also have a different, activity-like use in an appropriate context.
× 她的房间很干干净净。
Incorrect: Reduplicated adjectives already express degree and cannot be modified by 很 (hěn). Replace with 她的房间干干净净的 or 她的房间很干净.
Corrected example: 她的房间干干净净的。
× 孩子们高兴高兴地回家了。
Incorrect for the intended manner description with 高兴: use 高高兴兴地回家. This is a rule for this word and meaning, not a claim that every two-syllable adjective must reduplicate as AABB.
Corrected example: 孩子们高高兴兴地回家了。
Not every adjective permits a regular AA or AABB form. Learn established forms such as 大大的, 干干净净, and 清清楚楚. Do not generate a new repeated word merely because the original adjective has one or two syllables; syllable count and an abstract-versus-concrete meaning alone do not determine acceptability.
Frequently asked questions
Is the particle 的 (de) always required after AA and AABB adjectives?
Use 的 in the noun-modifying and predicate patterns shown here, such as 大大的眼睛 and 房间干干净净的. For manner before a verb, the written particle is 地, as in 高高兴兴地回家. After 得, 清清楚楚 can appear as a complement without another final 的. Particle choice and omission depend on function and context, not just the noun’s syllable count.
What is the difference between 很干净 (hěn gān jìng) and 干干净净的 (gān gān jìng jìng de)?
很干净 states the fact that something is clean. 干干净净的 is more vivid and expressive, conveying that the speaker perceives the space as pleasantly, thoroughly neat and tidy.
Can I turn any two-syllable adjective into AABB?
No. AABB depends on the particular word. Practise established forms such as 干干净净, 高高兴兴, 清清楚楚, 安安静静, and 漂漂亮亮, rather than applying the pattern to every two-syllable adjective. Other reduplication patterns belong to their own word-specific uses.
