Using the Structural Particle 的 (de) for Possession and Modification in HSK 1
The structural particle 的 (de) connects a modifier or possessor to a following head noun. It is the primary tool at the beginner level for expressing possession and describing nouns.

我的书
Basic possessive phrase: the pronoun 我 (I/me) precedes 的 to modify the head noun 书 (book).
× 书的我
Incorrect when trying to say 'my book'. The possessor must come before 的 and the head noun after it. Replace with 我的书.
Corrected example: 我的书

What Is the Structural Particle 的 (de)?
In the HSK 1 grammar outline (edition 2025-11), the structural particle 的 (classified as 结构助词 的1) is introduced as a core linking word for noun phrases. In Mandarin, descriptive words, possessors, and attributing phrases must come before the noun they describe. The particle 的 sits directly between the describing element and the main noun to mark this relationship.
The structural particle 的 is pronounced in the neutral tone (de), normally short and unstressed. The outline labels this entry 的1. Here, focus on its role connecting a modifier to an explicit head noun.
Expressing Possession and Belonging
The most frequent beginner use of 的 is showing ownership or association. It functions much like the apostrophe-s ('s) in English or the word 'of', and it turns personal pronouns (such as I, you, he/she) into possessive equivalents (my, your, his/her).
我的书
Basic possessive phrase: the pronoun 我 (I/me) precedes 的 to modify the head noun 书 (book).
老师的杯子
A noun possessor 老师 (teacher) linked by 的 to the possessed object 杯子 (cup).
Notice that Mandarin does not use separate vocabulary words for 'I' versus 'my' or 'he' versus 'his'. Instead, you simply take the standard pronoun or noun and follow it with 的 before the object owned.
Describing Nouns with Multi-Syllable Modifiers
Beyond ownership, 的 links descriptive modifiers to a noun. Use it as a clear beginner pattern with descriptions such as 漂亮的衣服 or 很漂亮的衣服. Whether it can be omitted also depends on the particular adjective-noun pairing and context, not just the adjective’s syllable count.
漂亮的衣服
的 links the descriptive adjective 漂亮 (pretty) to the head noun 衣服 (clothes). This is a natural descriptive phrase; syllable count alone does not make 的 compulsory in every adjective-noun combination.
Whether the first part of the phrase is a person, a pronoun, or a descriptive adjective, the structural logic remains identical: the element before 的 narrows down or describes the head noun that follows.
When to Omit 的: Close Relationships and Fixed Groups
Beginners often assume every English possessive pronoun must be translated with 的. In natural Chinese, however, 的 is frequently left out when the relationship between the possessor and the noun is very close, personal, or institutional.
- Close family members and personal relations after a singular pronoun (for example, mother, father, older brother, friend).
- Institutional collectives after a plural pronoun when speaking of a shared school, company, or home.
- Common single-syllable adjectives that bond directly with a noun to form a familiar everyday concept (such as 好人 for a good person, or 小猫 for a kitten).
我妈妈
With close family members, 的 is naturally omitted between the pronoun and the kinship term.
我们学校
With collective institutions, 的 is often omitted after a plural pronoun.
Common Learner Mistake: Reversing the Head Noun and Modifier
For speakers of languages that use 'of' constructions (like 'the book of mine' or 'the cup of the teacher'), the biggest pitfall is placing the main item first and the owner second. In Mandarin, the head noun must always stand at the very end of the 的 phrase.
× 书的我
Incorrect when trying to say 'my book'. The possessor must come before 的 and the head noun after it. Replace with 我的书.
Corrected example: 我的书
If you want to talk about a book that belongs to you, 'book' (书) is the head noun and 'I/me' (我) is the modifier. Putting 书 before 的 reverses the grammar and fails to mean 'my book'. Always ask yourself what the core thing is that you are talking about, and place that word after 的.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the HSK syllabus list this grammar point as 的1?
The numeral identifies a particular grammatical entry in the outline. The table row itself does not explain the full numbering system. This lesson focuses on an explicit modifier + 的 + head noun, rather than claiming which other uses belong to every numbered entry.
Can I omit 的 with everyday personal objects like my phone or my cup?
For a clear beginner pattern, keep 的 in phrases such as 我的手机 and 我的杯子. In informal speech, speakers sometimes omit it with belongings when context is clear, so omission is not an absolute grammatical ban. The close-family patterns taught here are especially useful starting points.
