HSK 1 Attributives (定语): Nominal, Adjectival, and Numeral-Measure Modifiers
In Mandarin Chinese, an attributive (定语) is any word or phrase that modifies, restricts, or describes a head noun (中心语). At Level 1 of the supplied HSK outline, learners focus on three core types of attributives: nominal words and phrases, adjectival phrases, and numeral-measure phrases. All of them follow one foundational Chinese word-order principle: the modifier always comes before the noun it describes.

老师的书在桌子上。
Here 老师 (teacher) is a nominal word expressing ownership, so it takes 的 before the head noun 书 (book).
× 那是书的老师。
Incorrect in this context: placing 书 before 的 and 老师 after 的 makes 老师 the head noun ('the book's teacher'), reversing the intended meaning. Use “那是老师的书。” instead.
Corrected example: 那是老师的书。

What Is an Attributive (定语) in Chinese?
When you want to specify whose book you are talking about, what kind of friend someone has, or how many cups are on a table, you add a modifier to a noun. In Chinese grammar, this sentence component is called an attributive (定语), and the noun being modified is the head word or head noun (中心语). In the Level 1 syllabus row of the supplied 2025-11 HSK outline, attributives cover three specific modifier types: nominal words and phrases (名词性词语), adjectival phrases (形容词性短语), and numeral-measure phrases (数量短语).
Unlike English, which places some modifiers before the noun (such as a good friend) and others after the noun (such as the book of the teacher), Mandarin consistently places attributives in front of the head noun. Whether the modifier is a single pronoun, a descriptive phrase, or a counted quantity, the head noun stands at the end of the noun phrase.
- Nominal attributives (名词性词语作定语): identify ownership, personal relationships, or classification.
- Adjectival phrase attributives (形容词性短语作定语): describe qualities or states of the head noun.
- Numeral-measure attributives (数量短语作定语): count or quantify the head noun using a number plus a classifier.
Nominal Words and Phrases as Attributives (名词性词语作定语)
Nouns and pronouns frequently modify another noun. When a noun or pronoun expresses ownership or association, the structural particle 的 is normally placed between the nominal modifier and the head noun. Think of 的 as a linker showing that the first item modifies the second item.
老师的书在桌子上。
Here 老师 (teacher) is a nominal word expressing ownership, so it takes 的 before the head noun 书 (book).
However, 的 is not required in every nominal attributive. In two very common beginner situations, the nominal modifier attaches directly to the head noun without 的. First, when a personal pronoun (such as 我, 你, or 他) modifies a close family member or a collective institution (such as 妈妈, 爸爸, or 学校), speakers often omit 的 to reflect closeness. Second, when a noun classifies the head noun by type, subject, or language (such as 汉语 modifying 老师), the two nouns form a tight classification unit and do not take 的.
我妈妈是医生。
When a personal pronoun like 我 modifies a close family member like 妈妈, 的 is naturally omitted.
他是汉语老师。
Here 汉语 specifies the type of teacher rather than ownership, so no 的 is used between 汉语 and 老师.
Adjectival Phrases as Attributives (形容词性短语作定语)
Notice that the syllabus specifically names adjectival phrases (形容词性短语), not merely bare adjectives. An adjectival phrase is commonly formed by combining a degree adverb such as 很 (very) or 太 (too) with an adjective, or by using a multi-syllable descriptive expression. When an adjectival phrase modifies a head noun, you must link it to the noun with 的.
她有一个很好的朋友。
Both 一个 (a numeral-measure phrase) and 很好 (an adjectival phrase with 很) modify 朋友; the adjectival phrase requires 的 before the head noun.
A useful contrast here is between a full adjectival phrase (like 很好) and a simple monosyllabic adjective (like 新 or 好) used on its own. When a common single-syllable adjective directly classifies a familiar noun, 的 is usually omitted because the adjective and noun bond into a fixed everyday expression. Once you expand that adjective into a phrase with 很, however, 的 becomes obligatory before the head noun.
我要买新衣服。
A single-syllable adjective like 新 can attach directly to 衣服 without 的 when no degree adverb like 很 is present.
Numeral-Measure Phrases as Attributives (数量短语作定语)
When counting ordinary objects in Mandarin, a number normally needs a classifier before the noun. A number (数词) combines with a measure word or classifier (量词) to form a numeral-measure phrase (数量短语), which then acts as the attributive before the head noun. For example, to count books you need the measure word 本, and to count chairs you need 把.
我买三本书。
The numeral-measure phrase 三本 directly modifies the head noun 书 without 的.
For the quantity two before common classifiers such as 本 and 把, use 两 rather than 二. In addition, ordinary counting with a numeral-measure phrase connects straight to the head noun; you do not insert 的 between the measure word and the counted noun.
房间里有两把椅子。
Before a measure word such as 把, use 两 for the quantity two, and place the numeral-measure phrase directly before 椅子.
Common Learner Errors and How to Fix Them
Two frequent beginner mistakes happen when building attributives. The first is reversing the order of the modifier and the head noun on the model of English phrases like the book of the teacher. Because whatever precedes 的 is the modifier and whatever follows 的 is the main noun, swapping them completely changes what the phrase refers to.
× 那是书的老师。
Incorrect in this context: placing 书 before 的 and 老师 after 的 makes 老师 the head noun ('the book's teacher'), reversing the intended meaning. Use “那是老师的书。” instead.
Corrected example: 那是老师的书。
那是老师的书。
Correct replacement for “那是书的老师。”: the possessor 老师 comes first, followed by 的, and the head noun 书 comes last.
The second common mistake is over-applying 的 after learning that nominal and adjectival phrases use it. Learners sometimes insert 的 after a standard numeral-measure phrase when counting nouns. Standard numeral-measure attributives modify the noun directly without 的.
× 他有三个的朋友。
Incorrect: a counting numeral-measure phrase (三个) cannot take 的 before the counted noun (朋友). Use “他有三个朋友。” instead.
Corrected example: 他有三个朋友。
他有三个朋友。
Correct replacement for “他有三个的朋友。”: the numeral-measure phrase 三个 attaches directly to the head noun 朋友 without 的.
Frequently asked questions
Can a numeral-measure phrase and an adjectival phrase modify the same noun together?
Yes. As seen in 一个很好的朋友 (a very good friend), the numeral-measure phrase (一个) comes first, followed by the adjectival phrase plus 的 (很好的), and finally the head noun (朋友).
Is saying 我的妈妈 instead of 我妈妈 ungrammatical?
No. Both are grammatical. Omitting 的 (我妈妈) is more natural in everyday conversation for close family relationships, while keeping 的 (我的妈妈) is also acceptable, especially when emphasizing contrast or speaking more formally.
Does this HSK 1 grammar item apply to all current HSK exams?
This lesson teaches the Level 1 attributive entry from the 2025-11 edition of the HSK outline (labeled for July 2026 implementation). Because individual test centers and booking periods may administer different exam versions, always verify the active syllabus with your test provider.
