HSK 7-9 Four-Character Pattern: 无A可B (wú A kě B)
无A可B is a four-character frame expressing an absence or lack, as in 无话可说 and 无路可走. Learn the whole expression: the missing element can be content, a destination, a resource or a means, and the meanings range from having nothing to say to having no remedy.

面对确凿的证据,他已经无话可说。
无话可说 is the predicate. In this evidence context it suggests having no reply, but the expression does not always mean that the speaker lacks the ability to argue.

Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope
The outline groups 无A可B as a fixed four-character frame. 无 presents an absence, while 可 connects the relevant possibility or action. Learn the meaning of the whole expression instead of assuming that every A is an object acted on by B.
The relationship varies. In 无话可说, 话 is what could be said. In 无家可归, 家 is the destination to return to. In 无药可救, 药 is the missing means of rescue or treatment, not the person or thing being saved. These differences matter when paraphrasing.

无话可说 is the predicate. In this evidence context it suggests having no reply, but the expression does not always mean that the speaker lacks the ability to argue.
Internal Structure and Rhythm
In this compact frame, A and B each occupy one character, usually one syllable. A names something absent or unavailable; B supplies the related action. Established expressions have different internal relationships, so the frame is a guide to recognizing them, not proof that any noun and verb can be combined.
- Slot A (Monosyllabic Noun): Often a general, foundational noun or bound root such as 话 (words), 事 (matters/work), 家 (home), 路 (road/way), 药 (medicine), or 懈 (weakness/gap).
- Slot B: a single-character verb or verb root such as 说, 做, 归, 走, 救 or 击. It need not be a verb taking A as a direct object; compare the destination 家 in 无家可归 and the means 药 in 无药可救.
- Sentence roles: the expression can be a predicate, as in 他无话可说, or modify a noun with 的. In 让许多村民无家可归, 许多村民 are the affected people and 无家可归 describes their resulting situation; the phrase is not simply an object immediately after 让.
那场突如其来的洪水让许多村民无家可归。
无家可归 (literally, having no home to return to) is a fixed idiom using the literary verb 归 (return).
Natural Usage: From Semi-Fixed Phrases to Idioms
Expressions following 无A可B fall along a spectrum. At one end are transparent, semi-fixed combinations built from everyday characters, such as 无话可说 (nothing to say), 无事可做 (nothing to do), 无路可走 (no way out), and 无处可去 (nowhere to go). In these, learners can immediately see how the noun and verb fit together, and the phrases work smoothly in both spoken commentary and written prose.
在激烈的市场竞争中,如果不创新就会无路可走。
无路可走 is used figuratively here to mean running out of viable strategies or options.
More lexicalized expressions include 无懈可击, “having no weak point to attack,” 无计可施, “having no plan left to apply,” and 无药可救, “beyond remedy.” Learn the whole idiom and its intended literal or figurative meaning. In particular, 无药可救 does not mean “there is no medicine to save”; the medicine would be the means of saving someone or something.
这份策划案逻辑严密,几乎到了无懈可击的地步。
无懈可击 modifies 地步 with 的; 几乎 qualifies the absolute state naturally.
Contrast with Everyday Spoken Constructions
To use 无A可B naturally at an advanced level, compare it with its looser, conversational counterpart: 没有 + Noun + 可以 + Verb (or 没 + Monosyllabic Noun + 可 + Verb). While the core meaning overlaps, their register, rhythm, and flexibility differ sharply.
- The four-character idioms have a compact form, but the broader construction allows longer expressions. 无资料可查 means that there are no materials to consult. In conversation, 没有合适的书可以读 can express having no suitable books to read. More than four characters does not itself make a phrase ungrammatical.
- The compact form can sound emphatic, but context and delivery determine the force. 无话可说 may convey speechlessness, resignation or simply having nothing further to add. It does not by itself prove an inability to argue or make every spoken paraphrase weaker.
- Choose combinations whose meanings fit. 无书可读 and 无钱可用 can refer to ordinary resources; an everyday topic is not forbidden. For coffee, 没有咖啡喝 is a natural conversational choice. 无咖啡可喝 is longer than the four-character frame and more written in tone, not automatically a grammar violation.
Limits and Common Learner Mistakes
When you want the conventional four-character phrase, use its established form. 无事情可做 below is understandable but not the usual compact expression; 无事可做 is more natural and concise here. Do not generalize this preference into a ban on longer forms such as 无资料可查.
失业之后,他每天待在家里无事情可做。
Understandable expanded wording, but 无事可做 is the more natural concise expression here. Five characters alone do not make a construction ungrammatical.
失业之后,他每天待在家里无事可做。
无事可做 is the usual compact wording. It keeps the same person, unemployment and lack of things to do.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put any monosyllabic noun and verb into 无A可B?
Not every pair is natural; learn combinations whose meanings fit, such as 无书可读 and 无钱可用. The topic can be an ordinary resource. Longer 无…可… phrases also exist, so neither an everyday topic nor a word longer than one character is by itself a universal grammar error.
Can a 无A可B phrase take another object after it?
The examples here normally work as complete predicates. In 无话可说, 话 is already what could be said, so do not append another object as though 说 were waiting for one. However, A is not always an object: in 无药可救, 药 names a missing means. Read the whole expression before applying a general rule.
