HSK 7-9 Four-Character Pattern: 忽A忽B

忽A忽B is a four-character frame for alternation, as in 忽冷忽热 and 忽快忽慢. It often makes changes feel abrupt or marked, but does not by itself show that they are unplanned, uncontrollable or unwelcome.

忽 monosyllabic state/direction A 忽 contrasting single-character state or direction B
Example sentence

进入四月以来,这里的天气忽冷忽热,让人很难决定穿什么衣服。

Jìnrù sìyuè yǐlái, zhèlǐ de tiānqì hūlěnghūrè, ràng rén hěn nán juédìng chuān shénme yīfu.

Since April began, the weather here has kept switching between cold and hot, making it hard to decide what to wear.

Correct: 忽冷忽热 functions as the main predicate, describing erratic temperature swings.

A common mistake

× 他的考试成绩忽优秀忽糟糕,让老师很担心。

Tā de kǎoshì chéngjì hū yōuxiù hū zāogāo, ràng lǎoshī hěn dānxīn.

Intended: His exam grades fluctuate between excellent and terrible, which worries the teacher.

This is not a conventional four-character expression, and the pairing 忽优秀忽糟糕 is awkward. To retain the two whole adjectives naturally, use the fuller 时而…时而… wording in the next example. The issue is not that every longer expression of alternation is ungrammatical.

Corrected example: 他的考试成绩时而优秀,时而糟糕,让老师很担心。

Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

In the supplied HSK 3.0 outline (2025-11 edition with a 2026-07 implementation label), 忽A忽B is categorized under Bands 7-9 as a fixed four-character phrase (四字格). Note that this level designation reflects the supplied reference outline rather than a guarantee of what any individual test center currently administers.

The repeated 忽 highlights alternation, often with a sense of sudden change. Weather, speed and brightness are familiar examples. The change can still be deliberate: a dancer’s movements may be described as 忽快忽慢. The phrase does not by itself prove that the rhythm was random or that the performer lost control.

Structure and Lexical Constraints

忽 monosyllabic state/direction A 忽 contrasting single-character state or direction B

For the four-character frame, learn familiar, meaningful pairs. Each slot takes one character, usually one syllable. The pair normally contrasts states, actions or directions; being able to fill the slots does not make an arbitrary combination natural.

  • Four-character form: A and B each take one character, as in 冷 and 热. This defines the compact frame, not every possible sentence with repeated 忽 or 忽而.
  • Meaningful contrast: the paired elements typically contrast in a way that makes sense in context, such as temperature, speed, brightness or direction. Direct dictionary antonymy is not the only test.
  • Stative or directional nature: The slots are most commonly filled by monosyllabic adjectives (冷/热, 快/慢, 明/暗, 高/低, 远/近) or directional/stative verbs (上/下, 左/右, 聚/散).

Sentence Roles in Natural Chinese

In a sentence, a 忽A忽B phrase behaves very much like an adjective phrase. It typically serves one of three grammatical roles without needing extra aspect particles like 了 or 过 attached directly to it:

  • As a predicate: Placed directly after the subject (such as weather, mood, lights, or prices) to state how the subject fluctuates.
  • As a complement of state: Placed after V + 得 to describe the erratic manner in which an action is performed.
  • As an attributive modifier: Placed before + 的 + Noun to describe something characterized by unstable changes.

前方的车辆开得忽快忽慢,我们最好保持安全距离。

Qiánfāng de chēliàng kāi de hūkuàihūmàn, wǒmen zuìhǎo bǎochí ānquán jùlí.

The vehicle ahead keeps speeding up and slowing down; we had better keep a safe distance.

Correct: 忽快忽慢 is used after 开得 as a complement of state.

夜深了,山谷里传来忽远忽近的歌声。

Yè shēn le, shāngǔ lǐ chuánlái hūyuǎnhūjìn de gēshēng.

Late at night, singing that sounded now far away, now close by drifted from the valley.

Correct: 忽远忽近 modifies 歌声 with 的 as an attributive phrase.

狂风中,远处的渔火忽明忽暗。

Kuángfēng zhōng, yuǎnchù de yúhuǒ hūmínghū’àn.

In the fierce wind, the fishing lights in the distance flickered between bright and dim.

Correct: 明 and 暗 are classic monosyllabic opposites describing unstable light.

Contrast: 忽A忽B vs. 时A时B and 时而...时而...

The constructions overlap, so compare the intended effect and the whole phrase. 忽 often makes alternation vivid or abrupt; 时 emphasizes different times. Neither word sets a required time interval or proves that the change was planned or unplanned.

  • 忽冷忽热 and 时冷时热 can both describe changing temperatures. The first often foregrounds marked shifts; the second foregrounds different times. The contrast is a tendency, not a rule requiring one to be rapid and the other slow or periodic.
  • The compact four-character frames have single-character slots. Longer predicates can use a fuller construction such as 时而强硬,时而温和 or 忽而强硬,忽而温和. 时而 is one useful option, not the only possible connector for every two-syllable adjective.

谈判代表在会议上时而强硬,时而温和,策略十分灵活。

Tánpàn dàibiǎo zài huìyì shàng shí'ér qiángyìng, shí'ér wēnhé, cèlüè shífēn línghuó.

The negotiator was at times tough and at times gentle during the meeting, showing a very flexible strategy.

时而…时而… naturally takes the longer adjectives 强硬 and 温和. A fuller pattern with 忽而 is also possible; four-character 忽A忽B is a different compact form.

Limits and Common Learner Mistakes

For an established four-character expression, keep its concise form. When retaining longer adjectives, a fuller alternating construction may sound more natural. In the grades example below, 时而 accommodates 优秀 and 糟糕 without replacing them with merely “high” and “low.” A phrase such as 对人忽冷忽热 often criticizes inconsistent treatment, but descriptive 忽 phrases in other contexts need not be negative.

他的考试成绩时而优秀,时而糟糕,让老师很担心。

Tā de kǎoshì chéngjì shí’ér yōuxiù, shí’ér zāogāo, ràng lǎoshī hěn dānxīn.

His exam results alternate between excellent and terrible, which worries the teacher.

时而 accommodates the same two adjectives and preserves the original description of the exam results and the teacher’s concern. For a compact four-character alternative about score levels, 忽高忽低 is also possible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reverse the order of A and B in 忽A忽B?

Many pairs permit either order when the context supports it. For example, 忽明忽暗 and 忽暗忽明 both occur, as do 忽快忽慢 and 忽慢忽快. Learn familiar combinations, but do not turn a common dictionary order into a universal prohibition on reversal.

Can 忽冷忽热 describe a person as well as the weather?

Yes. When applied to a person's attitude toward someone else (for example, 对人忽冷忽热), it means blowing hot and cold—acting warm and enthusiastic one moment, then distant and aloof the next.
