谈何……: Saying Something Is Out of Reach

谈何 (tán hé) introduces an action, quality, or outcome that is being treated as impossible, premature, or unsupported in the circumstances. Learn what follows it, how the preceding context supplies the obstacle, and why the expression often sounds pointed or critical.

Explicit subject, when needed before 谈何 还/又谈何 Action or matter whose feasibility is challenged
Example sentence

基础尚未打牢,谈何创新?

Jīchǔ shàngwèi dǎláo, tán hé chuàngxīn?

The foundation is not yet solid; what possibility is there of innovation?

The question challenges the idea of innovating before the groundwork is secure.

Form and meaning

谈何 is fixed: 谈 means “discuss,” and 何 means “what/how,” but in this frame they do not function as an ordinary invitation to discuss something. 谈何…… raises a rhetorical question whose implied answer is that the named action, quality, or result cannot reasonably be expected under the stated conditions. The obstacle usually appears first; 谈何 introduces what that obstacle makes unrealistic, premature, or difficult to claim.

谈何 Action or matter whose feasibility is challenged

After 谈何, name the action or matter being challenged, such as 创新, 得出可靠结论, or 高效合作. These phrases can describe activities; do not insist that every such phrase is a noun naming a quality. If an explicit subject is needed for the rhetorical clause, place it before 谈何, as in 我们又谈何合作? Do not use 谈何 + arbitrary subject + predicate as a general template. The obstacle is often stated first or supplied by context.

Force and register

The frame is more forceful than a neutral statement such as “it is difficult to….” It challenges an expectation or claim: if the prerequisite is absent, how could the proposed action or result be possible? Depending on context, the tone can be skeptical, admonishing, frustrated, or emphatic. It is common in argument, commentary, and considered speech or writing. In casual conversation it can sound dramatic or confrontational, so use it when that emphasis is intended.

Examples in context

In each example, the first clause supplies a reason to doubt the phrase after 谈何. The final question mark marks rhetorical force; it does not necessarily ask the listener for information.

连最基本的数据都没有核实,谈何得出可靠结论?

Lián zuì jīběn de shùjù dōu méiyǒu héshí, tán hé déchū kěkào jiélùn?

The most basic data have not even been verified, so how could anyone reach a reliable conclusion?

连……都 (lián…dōu, “not even…”) highlights how fundamental the missing step is; 谈何 then challenges the proposed conclusion.

团队之间缺乏信任,谈何高效合作?

Tuánduì zhījiān quēfá xìnrèn, tán hé gāoxiào hézuò?

There is a lack of trust between the teams, so how can they cooperate efficiently?

团队之间 means between teams, not necessarily between members of a single team. The cooperation is what the speaker calls into question.

连问题出在哪里都没弄清楚,谈何解决?

Lián wèntí chū zài nǎlǐ dōu méi nòng qīngchu, tán hé jiějué?

They have not even figured out where the problem lies, so how can they talk about solving it?

The actor is understood from context. 解决 follows 谈何 directly and names the action being challenged.

Choosing and using the frame

  • Use 谈何 when you want to challenge the feasibility or credibility of an action, quality, or result in light of an obstacle.
  • Name the challenged action or matter after 谈何, for example 得出可靠结论 or 高效合作.
  • Identify the actor in the preceding context, or before 谈何 when explicitly needed; do not insert a subject between 谈何 and its following activity.
  • Prefer this frame when you want a pointed rhetorical challenge. For a neutral report of difficulty, state the difficulty directly instead of implying that the proposed result is out of reach.

Frequently asked questions

Does 谈何 always mean “discuss what”?

No. In this fixed rhetorical frame, it usually challenges the possibility or credibility of the phrase that follows. Its literal parts do not make the whole expression an ordinary request for a topic.

Must 谈何…… end with a question mark?

No punctuation mark is built into the frame. A question mark is common when the sentence is presented as a rhetorical question, but punctuation depends on the sentence and style.
