该X(就)X,该Y(就)Y: Handle Each Matter as It Should Be Handled

This lesson explains how 该X(就)X,该Y(就)Y distributes appropriate actions across people, duties, or situations. It covers the repeated pattern, optional 就, pragmatic force, register, and context-sensitive choices.

该 Action or predicate X (就) Action or predicate X ,该 Action or predicate Y (就) Action or predicate Y
Example sentence

该谁负责谁负责,该谁决定谁决定。

Gāi shuí fùzé shuí fùzé, gāi shuí juédìng shuí juédìng.

Let whoever is responsible take responsibility, and let whoever has the authority decide.

Correct. The person phrases are paired with their corresponding responsibilities.

Meaning and effect

The frame 该X(就)X,该Y(就)Y presents two or more people, matters, or situations and pairs each one with the action that is appropriate for it. A natural English rendering is “Let whoever should do it do it; let whoever should decide decide,” or “Do what needs doing, and handle each matter accordingly.” It does not simply report that two actions happened. The speaker frames them as due, fitting, or called for.

Depending on context and intonation, the pattern can sound practical and even-handed, firm, or resigned. It may insist that responsibilities be assigned fairly, reject unnecessary hesitation, or accept that different cases require different responses. The frame itself does not mean “whatever you want.” The speaker implies that the actions are warranted by roles, rules, facts, or circumstances.

The sentence distributes responsibility: whoever is responsible should take responsibility, and whoever has authority to decide should decide. In a discussion about an organization, this can sound firm but orderly.

Build the repeated frame

In the core frame, repeat the action or predicate: 该工作就工作,该休息就休息. Each clause opens with 该 followed by its first copy; optional 就 then links to the repeated action. 该 expresses what is appropriate or called for. X and Y need not be opposites, but merely naming a person after 该 is not enough: 该小王小王 is not this pattern. The first example expands the frame into 该谁负责谁负责, repeating the clause 谁负责.

该 Action or predicate X (就) Action or predicate X ,该 Action or predicate Y (就) Action or predicate Y

就 can be omitted when the parallel relation remains clear. Using it in both clauses often gives a balanced rhythm, but symmetry is a style preference, not a grammatical requirement that bans every mixed sentence. Check the wording and context of each clause.

该解释的就解释清楚,该道歉的就认真道歉。

Gāi jiěshì de jiù jiěshì qīngchu, gāi dàoqiàn de jiù rènzhēn dàoqiàn.

Explain what needs explaining clearly, and sincerely apologize for what calls for an apology.

Correct. 的 marks the relevant category or task before the response.

In 该解释的就解释清楚, the repeated core is 解释. 的 nominalizes the first part, while 清楚 extends the response. In 该道歉的就认真道歉, 认真 adds how the apology should be made. Do not assume that the full 的 phrase must be copied unchanged after 就.

What can fill X and Y

The core repeated element is an action or predicate, and longer noun-modifying expressions can organize the cases. A related expanded version repeats an interrogative clause, as in 该谁负责谁负责. Such 谁 is not asking the listener to name a person here; it links whoever should act with that same person acting. The frame conveys appropriateness, not permission to do anything at all.

该走流程就走流程,该补材料就补材料。

Gāi zǒu liúchéng jiù zǒu liúchéng, gāi bǔ cáiliào jiù bǔ cáiliào.

Follow the procedure where it is required, and provide the missing documents where they are needed.

Correct. 就 is present in both halves and highlights the action following each category.

This example pairs two procedural tasks. The repeated verbs keep each task connected to its matching action. It would fit a discussion about processing an application or resolving a practical administrative matter.

该讨论的问题就讨论,该暂缓的项目就暂缓。

Gāi tǎolùn de wèntí jiù tǎolùn, gāi zànhuǎn de xiàngmù jiù zànhuǎn.

Discuss the matters that need discussion, and put the projects that should be postponed on hold.

Correct. The appropriate outcome differs for each identified category.

Here the 的 phrases identify matters or projects, while the final verbs state what to do with them. The outcomes differ, but both are presented as appropriate decisions for their categories.

Choosing the right situation

  • Use it when you are allocating duties, responses, or decisions across distinguishable people or cases.
  • Use it when the context establishes why each action is due or suitable; the sentence often draws on shared knowledge of roles, rules, or circumstances.
  • Use 就 when you want a more explicit action-link or a slightly more emphatic, decisive rhythm. Omit it when a concise parallel statement is natural.
  • Use parallel wording so listeners can match each category with its response. If the pairing is unclear, name the person, task, or situation more fully.

事情已经说清楚了,该接受就接受,该改正就改正。

Shìqing yǐjīng shuō qīngchu le, gāi jiēshòu jiù jiēshòu, gāi gǎizhèng jiù gǎizhèng.

The matter has been made clear; accept what should be accepted, and correct what should be corrected.

Correct. The precise tone depends on context.

The speaker treats acceptance and correction as separate appropriate responses after the matter has been clarified. The tone may be decisive or impatient depending on the prior exchange; the words alone do not fix one emotional reading.

The frame is natural in ordinary conversation and can also appear in discussion, commentary, or relatively formal speech. It often sounds evaluative because 该 expresses what ought to happen. In a neutral report of events, use direct descriptions instead; this frame adds the speaker’s judgment that each response is called for. Avoid using it when you cannot explain what makes the actions appropriate, unless that judgment is deliberately part of your point.

A useful contrast

Compare the pattern with a plain list of instructions. “Explain it and apologize” names two actions, but does not by itself assign each action to a category or say why it is due. The repeated 该 frame adds that matching logic: one thing calls for explanation, another for apology. A different-looking sentence with two actions is not automatically ungrammatical; it may simply lack this frame’s emphasis on appropriate allocation.

Frequently asked questions

Must I include 就 in both halves?

No. 就 can be omitted if the parallel relation is clear. Including it in both clauses often gives a balanced rhythm, but a sentence is not automatically wrong because one clause omits it.

Do X and Y need to be opposites?

No. They can be different tasks, people, or cases. The important point is that each is paired with an action presented as appropriate.

Does the frame always sound impatient?

No. It can sound practical, firm, or resigned depending on situation and intonation. It often carries a judgment about what is due.
