Shifting Topics Clearly in Chinese
A topic shift moves a passage from one subject to another while preserving the reader’s sense of how the ideas relate. Learn to signal the new focus, connect it to what came before, and return to earlier information when useful.

What a topic shift does
A topic shift changes what the reader should attend to next. It may move from a general subject to one aspect of it, from a problem to a response, or from one participant or issue to another. The shift is successful when the new focus has a clear relationship to the previous sentence. A marker can announce that relationship, but it cannot create one by itself. Readers still need enough context to understand why the discussion has moved.
Signals that guide the reader
说到 (shuō dào) often introduces an aspect that has just become relevant: “speaking of” or “as for.” 至于 (zhìyú) places a topic in focus and can suggest that it is being treated separately, often after another issue has been discussed. 不过 (búguò), meaning “however” or “still,” signals a turn in the reasoning; it is not simply a topic label. The choice depends on the relation you want to express, so these forms are not interchangeable in every sentence.
- Use 说到 when the new point grows naturally out of a word, issue, or idea in the preceding sentence.
- Use 至于 when you want to isolate or contrast another matter, especially after one matter has already been covered.
- Use 不过 when the next statement qualifies, counters, or redirects the previous line of thought. A following clause can return to an earlier topic, as in the passage below.
Follow the information through a passage
The four excerpts below form one short report of six sentences. The opening excerpt establishes the research focus and a finding. The second picks up satisfaction and identifies relevant service factors. The third shifts to improvement proposals. The final excerpt returns to commuting time, and its last sentence brings time and service reliability together. Track these changes of focus rather than treating each example card as one sentence.

The opening sets the frame and gives a finding that the next sentence can develop.
说到满意度,受访者更在意公交是否准时,以及换乘时有没有清楚的指引。
Correct: 说到 picks up satisfaction from the preceding sentence and narrows the discussion to relevant factors.
至于改善方案,受访者并没有一致的答案:有人主张增加班次,也有人建议先调整线路。
Correct: 至于 marks improvement proposals as a distinct focus following the discussion of satisfaction.
不过,通勤时间仍然重要,因为长时间的通勤会挤占休息和陪伴家人的时间。报告因此把服务可靠性和出行时间都列为后续评估的重点。
Correct: 不过 signals a qualification and return to an earlier factor; the final sentence ties both strands together.
Each change has a role. The second excerpt continues a related aspect of the survey; the third moves from evaluating satisfaction to proposing action. The last excerpt prevents the reader from dismissing commute duration and then links both factors. A shift and an extension can overlap: what matters is which focus the reader is asked to develop next.
Form a shift that fits its context
When drafting, name the current focus and the next one before choosing a marker. A shared idea, a contrast or the purpose of the discussion can explain the move. Topics need not always share a causal or substantive link: in a meeting, for example, 转到下一个议题 can explicitly introduce a separate agenda item. Mark that boundary or start a paragraph when needed. Do not rely on 不过 to label an unrelated topic; it normally signals a qualification or turn in reasoning.
A topic shift can also appear in a single sentence when the surrounding passage supplies the context. For example, the next sentence could follow a discussion of staffing before turning to the budget:
至于项目预算,目前还需要进一步核算。
Correct when prior context has established another topic, such as staffing; alone, the sentence does not specify that context.
Without that preceding context, 至于 still introduces the budget as a separate focus, but the reader may not know what it is being separated from. This is why a sentence that is grammatical on its own can still feel poorly connected in a passage.
- Can a reader name the previous focus and the new one?
- Does the new focus grow from, contrast with, or otherwise relate to the previous point?
- Does the sentence after the shift develop the new focus instead of switching away again without explanation?
- Would a transition or a paragraph break make the information flow easier to follow?
Topic shift and topic extension
A useful contrast is extension: an extension keeps developing the current focus, while a shift directs attention to a different focus. In this lesson’s passage, adding another detail about commuting time would extend the opening topic; moving to satisfaction changes the focus, though it remains connected to the survey. These categories can overlap in ordinary prose: a shift may begin with a detail from the previous topic and then lead somewhere new. Classify the move by what the reader is asked to focus on next, not by the presence of a particular marker alone.
Frequently asked questions
Does every topic shift need a marker?
No. A marker can clarify the relation, but a clear link between sentences may make one unnecessary. Use one when it helps the reader follow the change.
Can 至于 and 说到 be used in the same way?
They can both introduce a topic, but their typical emphasis differs. 说到 often connects to something just mentioned; 至于 more often sets a matter apart. Let the intended relationship and surrounding context guide your choice.
