HSK 7-9 Frequency Adverbs: Nuances of Repetition, Continuity, and Alternation
At the advanced level, expressing repetition in Chinese requires choosing adverbs that match specific registers, rhythms, and grammatical structures. This guide breaks down the ten HSK 7-9 frequency adverbs—连连, 屡次, 屡屡, 频, 时而, 时时, 相继, 一个劲(儿), 一连, and 再度—by grouping them into functional categories and highlighting their structural constraints.

听了老师的解释,他连连点头,还一个劲儿地道谢。
连连 marks repeated nodding. 一个劲儿地 emphasizes that the thanking kept going; the expression itself does not require a particular emotion.
× 他昨天一个人相继完成了那份简短的表格。
For the intended single completion, 相继 is unnecessary: no sequence of separate completions is stated. Remove it as in the next example. This is not a general prohibition on singular subjects.
Corrected example: 他昨天一个人完成了那份简短的表格。

Overview and Basic Word Order
The outline lists ten items in this group. They can describe repetition, persistence, alternation, succession or recurrence, so they are not interchangeable. A common position is before the predicate. Some form a longer time expression: in 一连三天,我们都没有出门, the whole phrase 一连三天 comes before the subject.
Uninterrupted Spans and Persistent Actions: 连连, 一连, 一个劲(儿)
These three items highlight different kinds of continuity. Repeated events need not be literally unbroken: 一连三天开会 can mean a meeting on each of three consecutive days, not a meeting lasting seventy-two hours without a pause.
- 连连 (liánlián) marks repeated or successive occurrences, as in 连连点头, 连连道谢 or 好运连连. Gestures and spoken responses are common examples, but physical action and a rapid pace are not obligatory.
- 一个劲(儿) (yī gè jìnr) is conversational and emphasizes keeping at an action, as in 一个劲儿地道谢 or 一个劲儿地哭. The speaker may sound appreciative, annoyed or descriptive. 地 is common in these phrases; neither enthusiasm nor stubbornness is part of every use.
- 一连 (yīlián) highlights a consecutive run. A quantity can follow the action, as in 一连开了三天会, or precede it, as in 一连三天都开会. The quantity may count events or time; it is not restricted to a complement after the verb.

Formal Repetition and Recurrence: 屡次, 屡屡, 频, 再度
In news reporting, essays, and formal narratives, repetition is expressed through more elevated vocabulary. Here, you must distinguish between many separate occurrences and a single return to a previous state.
- 屡次 (lǚcì) and 屡屡 (lǚlǚ) both express repeated occurrences and are common in written narration. 屡次 makes the repeated occasions prominent; 屡屡 often emphasizes a recurring pattern. They overlap substantially, and syllable count alone does not determine the following phrase.
- 再度 (zàidù) means “again / once more.” It draws attention to recurrence but does not by itself specify that this is exactly the second time, or how long the interval must be. 屡次 directly presents multiple repeated occasions.
- 频 (pín) means “frequently” in compact written expressions, such as 捷报频传 and 事故频发. Learn these combinations rather than replacing 常常 mechanically. The related form 频频 also means “repeatedly / frequently,” as in 频频点头; it is not the same written form as the single character 频.
这支球队曾屡次夺冠,今年屡屡打破纪录,昨天再度闯入决赛。
屡次 points to distinct past championships, 屡屡 emphasizes the high frequency of breaking records, and 再度 marks a single new recurrence yesterday.
近期捷报频传,但研究人员仍时时提醒自己保持谨慎。
频 pairs with the monosyllabic verb 传 in a formal four-character phrase (捷报频传), while 时时 modifies a mental verb of constant vigilance.
Alternation, Constancy, and Sequence: 时而, 时时, 相继
The remaining adverbs organize events across time or across multiple participants.
- 时时 (shíshí) means “often / at all times” according to context. It can describe ongoing awareness, as in 时时提醒自己, but also external events: 教室里时时传来笑声 means laughter can often be heard from the classroom. It need not mean literally every instant.
- 时而 (shí’ér) presents an occurrence from time to time. Paired 时而…时而… is useful for alternating actions or states, but a pair is not compulsory. The context supplies the relevant sequence or contrast.
- 相继 (xiāngjì) orders multiple occurrences one after another. Different people can perform an action in turn, or one person can complete several different tasks: 他相继完成了三份报告. A plural subject is not the requirement; a sequence of occurrences is.
山里的天气变化很快,时而刮风,时而下雨。
Correlative 时而...时而... contrasts two alternating weather conditions.
代表们相继发言,会议一连开了三天。
相继 orders the delegates’ speeches in succession. 一连开了三天 describes the consecutive span of the conference, without claiming it ran continuously day and night.
Common Learner Pitfall: Misusing 相继 with a Single Event
The form example below describes one person completing one form, with no sequence of separate completions. 相继 has no sequence to organize in this intended reading. Remove it to keep the original facts. A single person can still be the subject of 相继 when several occurrences are meant, as with completing three reports in turn.
他昨天一个人完成了那份简短的表格。
Removing 相继 preserves the person, the day and the single form. The statement simply reports one completed task.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace 一连 with 连连 before a number and measure word?
Usually they are not interchangeable. 一连 highlights a consecutive run, as in 一连三天都开会 or 一连开了三天会. 连连 highlights repeated occurrences, as in 连连点头. The key is the intended run or repetition, not a rule that all quantity phrases must follow a verb.
How should I learn the written forms 频 and 频频?
Learn complete combinations: 捷报频传 and 事故频发 use single-character 频, while 频频点头 uses the separate form 频频. These suit compact written narration. 常常 is a general conversational alternative when the meaning fits; four-character length is not a universal grammar rule.
How do 再度 and 屡次 differ in meaning?
再度 draws attention to something happening again. It does not necessarily mean “exactly twice.” 屡次 directly emphasizes multiple repeated occasions, so the two words present repetition differently.
