HSK 7-9 Scope Adverbs (范围副词): Total, Approximate, and Exclusive Scope
At advanced proficiency, Chinese speakers choose scope adverbs not just to say 'all' or 'only', but to signal register, administrative authority, or rhetorical stance. This lesson explains the advanced scope adverbs listed in the HSK 7-9 grammar outline, dividing them into total inclusion, approximate overview, and exclusive limitation.

1. Functional Grouping of Advanced Scope Adverbs
Scope adverbs (范围副词) define the boundaries of a statement: whether an action or state applies to every member of a group, to the general whole, or only to a single exception. In the HSK 7-9 syllabus outline, the scope adverb category groups together items that learners often confuse because their basic dictionary glosses overlap with elementary words like 都 (all) or 只 (only).
- Total inclusion (all, without exception): 均, 皆, 尽, 概, 一概, 通通, 统统.
- Approximate or macro scope (in the main, roughly): 大体.
- Exclusive or limiting scope: 唯, 唯独, 唯有, 无非. The source lists 唯独 as one word. 独 is a related literary form discussed for comparison.
2. Total Inclusion: Formal Written vs. Emphatic Spoken Scope
These adverbs quantify a relevant set of people, things, cases or events. Identify that scope, then read the predicate. It may be explicit in a plural topic or understood from context; the grammatical subject itself need not always be plural. The listed words share some meanings but do not freely replace one another in every phrase.
均 often suits formal reporting and can appear with affirmative or negative predicates. 皆 has a literary flavor. 尽 can express total scope or extent, as in 满眼尽是秋色; it does not always mean that a resource has been used up. These are useful tendencies, not rules fixing the emotional tone of every sentence.

深秋时节,山中草木皆披秋色,层林尽染。
皆 applies to the mountain vegetation; 尽 describes the extent of the autumn colors across the forest. Neither word implies that the plants are physically exhausted or used up.
一概 treats the relevant cases alike, as in 一概不受理 or 一概照办. 概 occurs in formal formulas such as 概不退换, but affirmative administrative phrases such as 概由专人办理 also occur. Do not turn a common negative pairing into a universal ban on affirmative predicates. For an ordinary report of completed events, 均 or 都 is usually easier to use naturally.
本次招聘材料一概不予退还,逾期申请概不受理。
In this illustrative notice, 一概 applies the no-return statement to all submitted materials. 概不受理 gives the same categorical treatment to late applications.
把桌上的旧杂志通通收起来,过期食品也统统扔掉。
通通 (tōngtōng) and 统统 (tǒngtǒng) both give emphatic total scope here. They are close in meaning, but are not the same spelling or pronunciation.
3. Approximate Scope: Macro Assessment with 大体
大体 presents the main outline or overall situation. It leaves room for details or exceptions without necessarily asserting that exceptions have actually been found. In 大体一致, the claim is broad agreement rather than identity in every detail.
大体 can modify assessments and verb phrases such as 大体一致, 大体完成 and 大体可分为两类. 完成 is a verb in these examples. 大概 has a probability use, “probably,” and can also give a rough estimate or outline; its uses are not divided from 大体 solely by whether a fact is already known.
两份提案的思路大体一致,只需微调细节。
大体 limits the claim to the macro level, leaving room for minor differences.
4. Exclusive and Reductive Scope: 唯, 唯有, 独, and 无非
The printed source lists 唯, 唯独, 唯有 and 无非. They limit scope in different ways. A restricted set may contain one person, several people, a condition or multiple possible explanations; “only” does not force the set to have exactly one member.
唯 and 唯有 can mark a required condition, often with 才 or 方能. 只有 can likewise precede nouns, pronouns and verb phrases: 只有他 and 只有坚持下去 are ordinary forms. 唯有 can also identify a limited group without a conditional result clause, as in 现场唯有两名工作人员. Distinguish necessary conditions from a guarantee that those conditions alone are sufficient.
唯坚持独立思考,唯有深入基层,方能查明实情。
唯 and 唯有 introduce an indispensable condition and pair with 方能 in formal argumentation.
其他人皆已离席,唯独他一人还留在会场。
其他人 sets the comparison group. 唯独 isolates him from that group’s leaving; it does not add a motive or judgment about why he stayed.
无非 often reduces a situation to a limited explanation or set of possibilities, with or without 是. It can sound dismissive, but the explanation remains the speaker’s claim: 他无非是想推卸责任 expresses an interpretation of motive, not independent proof of that motive.
他反复解释,无非是想推卸责任。
无非是 reduces a complex behavior to its plainest underlying motive.
5. Common Learner Error: Overextending Monosyllabic 概
Learn 概 through established formal pairings, rather than replacing every 均 or 都 with it. 概不受理 and 概由专人办理 illustrate negative and affirmative formulas. In the certificate example below, 均 is the natural choice for an ordinary report of what all contestants received. This is a collocation recommendation, not a ban on every affirmative 概 phrase.
所有参赛选手概获得了纪念证书。
This compressed use of 概 is not the ordinary modern-reporting choice. Use 均 in the next example for the intended neutral announcement. Affirmative forms such as 概由… show why “概 must be negative” would be too broad a rule.
所有参赛选手均获得了纪念证书。
均 is the straightforward formal-reporting choice for this affirmative statement about the contestants. The certificates and recipients remain the same.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a grammatical difference between 通通 and 统统?
Both often mean “all” with emphasis, and they can replace one another in many everyday phrases. Their standard dictionary tones differ: 通通 is tōngtōng, while 统统 is tǒngtǒng. Similar meaning does not make them one identical spoken form.
Both 无非 and 唯有 translate to 'only' in some contexts. How do they differ?
唯有 can single out a person, group or required condition. With 才, it marks necessity, not automatically sufficiency. 无非 limits an explanation or possibilities, often with a reducing tone. Neither word requires a grand outcome or exactly one possible member in the restricted set.
