HSK 5 A着A着: An Ongoing Action and a New Development

The four-character pattern A着A着 repeats a single-syllable action verb with the continuous particle 着 to show that while an action is ongoing, a new and often unplanned situation arises.

Subject / Topic Repeated activity verb 着 Repeated activity verb 着 , (就) New Situation / Change Clause
Example sentence

孩子听着听着故事就睡着了。

Hái zi tīng zhe tīng zhe gù shi jiù shuì zháo le.

While listening to the story, the child fell asleep.

Correct: 听 (listen) is a single-syllable durative verb, and 就睡着了 marks the unplanned change of state.

What A着A着 Means in Context

In the supplied HSK 5 syllabus outline, A着A着 is classified as a four-character fixed phrase (四字格). Note that this level designation reflects the reference outline rather than a guarantee of what appears on any specific test administration. In natural Mandarin, speakers use this pattern to describe an action that is already underway when another event, realization, or change of state happens.

The repeated verb with 着 emphasizes that the first action continues for a while. As time passes, the situation shifts—often naturally, gradually, or without the subject planning it. The second clause introduces that shift, frequently marked by adverbs such as 就 (then/consequently) or 突然 (suddenly).

Core Structure and Verb Selection

The core four-character form repeats a one-syllable activity verb, such as 走、听、说 or 想. Longer verbs can also repeat with 着: 讨论着讨论着 or 考虑着考虑着. In the narrative use taught here, the ongoing activity sets the background for a new development.

Subject / Topic Repeated activity verb 着 Repeated activity verb 着 , (就) New Situation / Change Clause
  • Choose a verb that can have an ongoing or repeated reading in context. 走、讨论 or 敲 fit readily. A normally one-time change such as 毕业 is not a useful basic model for this sustained-activity pattern; unusual imaginative uses need their own context.
  • If the verb has an object, speakers usually mention the object beforehand as a topic, or place a short, familiar object right after the first verb or after the whole four-character unit, though keeping A着A着 intact without a heavy object inside is by far the smoothest style.
  • The second clause normally contains a transition word like 就, 突然, or 竟然 to highlight that the new state emerged out of the ongoing process.

她说着说着就笑了起来。

Tā shuō zhe shuō zhe jiù xiào le qǐ lái.

As she was talking, she started laughing.

Correct: 说着说着 sets the ongoing background action before the sudden shift into laughter.

我们在老街走着走着,突然迷路了。

Wǒ men zài lǎo jiē zǒu zhe zǒu zhe, tū rán mí lù le.

As we kept walking along the old street, we suddenly got lost.

Correct: 走着走着 pairs naturally with 突然 (suddenly) to show an unintended result.

Natural Usage and Subject Scope

Although the subject of A着A着 is often a person performing an intentional activity (like reading or chatting), the outcome in the second clause is typically unscheduled or involuntary—such as falling asleep, forgetting one's point, bursting into tears, or losing track of time. The pattern is also natural with weather or environmental phenomena that unfold continuously before changing.

雨下着下着就停了。

Yǔ xià zhe xià zhe jiù tíng le.

The rain kept falling and then stopped.

Correct: Natural phenomena can also use A着A着 to show a continuous process ending or changing.

Contrast: A着A着 vs. 一边……一边……

一边……一边…… presents activities as simultaneous. A着A着 foregrounds an activity continuing when something new develops. That development may overlap the first activity, and does not have to be caused by it: 走着走着,天黑了 describes a time relation, not walking causing darkness. Neither construction requires every action to be intentional.

他一边听音乐,一边做晚饭。

Tā yī biān tīng yīn yuè, yī biān zuò wǎn fàn.

He listens to music while making dinner.

一边……一边…… presents listening and cooking as simultaneous activities. The sentence does not foreground a later new development.

The dinner sentence presents listening and cooking together. If you use 听着听着就开始做晚饭了, you instead narrate listening for a while and then beginning to cook. That change in viewpoint does not assert that the music caused the cooking.

Clear Word Choice and Topic Placement

讨论着讨论着 is possible Chinese. The discussion example below first states the topic and then repeats the verb, making the object easier to follow. The shorter 谈着谈着 is another option, not a required correction of the two-syllable form.

我们讨论这个问题,讨论着讨论着就发现了新办法。

Wǒmen tǎolùn zhège wèntí, tǎolùn zhe tǎolùn zhe jiù fāxiàn le xīn bànfǎ.

We were discussing this problem and, as the discussion continued, discovered a new approach.

Repeats the full verb 讨论 after first introducing the problem. A longer repeated verb is possible; the topic placement makes the sentence clear.

这个问题我们谈着谈着,就发现了新办法。

Zhège wèntí wǒmen tán zhe tán zhe, jiù fāxiàn le xīn bànfǎ.

As we continued discussing this problem, we discovered a new approach.

A compact version with 谈着谈着 and the problem as the topic. It is an alternative to the longer 讨论 form.

For a clear sentence, introduce what is being discussed, then describe the ongoing discussion and the discovery. Choose 讨论 or 谈 for the context; syllable count alone does not make either version wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use two-syllable verbs in A着A着?

Yes. The four-character core uses a one-syllable verb, but longer forms such as 讨论着讨论着 or 考虑着考虑着 can be natural. Keep the repeated verb and topic clear; do not replace a useful verb solely to meet a four-syllable count.

Can A着A着 stand alone at the end of a sentence?

In a full narrative sentence, this frame normally prepares the reader for what happened next: 他走着走着,迷路了. Ending with only 他走着走着 can sound suspended because the development is missing. Dialogue or deliberate ellipsis may leave it unstated, so this is a guide to a complete account rather than a ban on every unfinished utterance.
