HSK 5 Four-Character Pattern: A来A去 (A lái A qù)

A来A去 repeats a verb around 来 and 去 to show back-and-forth or repeated activity. The core four-character form uses a one-syllable verb, but longer forms such as 商量来商量去 are also possible. A following clause may give an outcome; an outcome is not required.

Repeated verb (one syllable in the core four-character form) 来 Repeated verb (one syllable in the core four-character form) 去
Example sentence

他在病房外走来走去,显得非常焦急。

tā zài bìngfáng wài zǒu lái zǒu qù , xiǎnde fēicháng jiāojí .

Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

The supplied HSK outline lists A来A去 under Level 5 four-character fixed phrases. In that core form, a one-syllable verb appears before each of 来 and 去: 想来想去. Longer repeated-verb expressions also occur in Chinese; the syllabus label is not a ban on them. The level identifies the reference study scope, not a guarantee about a particular test session.

Repeated verb (one syllable in the core four-character form) 来 Repeated verb (one syllable in the core four-character form) 去

Literally, 来 and 去 indicate movement toward and away from a reference point. When combined into A来A去, they lose their strict literal directional sense and instead indicate that the action A is performed repeatedly, back and forth, or in various directions. Depending on the verb, the pattern describes either continuous physical motion or extended mental and verbal activity.

Two Main Uses: Physical Motion and Deliberation

When the slot A is filled by a physical motion verb such as 走 (zǒu, walk), 跑 (pǎo, run), 飞 (fēi, fly), or 游 (yóu, swim), A来A去 depicts concrete movement back and forth within a space. A location phrase introduced by 在 (zài) typically precedes the four-character phrase to establish where the movement occurs.

他在病房外走来走去,显得非常焦急。

tā zài bìngfáng wài zǒu lái zǒu qù , xiǎnde fēicháng jiāojí .

He walked back and forth outside the hospital ward, looking very anxious.

几只小鸟在树林里飞来飞去。

jǐ zhī xiǎoniǎo zài shùlín lǐ fēi lái fēi qù .

Several little birds were flying back and forth in the woods.

Physical motion verb 飞 showing repeated movement in various directions.

When A is a cognitive, perceptual, or communication verb such as 想 (xiǎng, think), 看 (kàn, look), 说 (shuō, speak), 算 (suàn, calculate), or 挑 (tiāo, choose), the directional meaning becomes metaphorical. Here, A来A去 means turning a matter over and over in one's mind, inspecting options repeatedly, or discussing something at length. In this usage, the four-character phrase usually forms the first clause of a sentence, setting up a final decision, realization, or lack of progress in the second clause.

Subject Repeated verb (one syllable in the core four-character form) 来 Repeated verb (one syllable in the core four-character form) 去 , Result or conclusion clause

Cognitive verb 想 used in the first clause to set up a final decision introduced by 还是.

Verbal action 说 showing prolonged discussion that fails to reach a conclusion.

她在店里看来看去,终于挑中了一条合适的裙子。

Contrast: A来A去 vs. Ordinary Verb Reduplication

Compare repeated activity in A来A去 with brief or tentative verb reduplication such as 看看 or 想想. Their typical emphasis differs, but they are not exact semantic opposites.

  • 看看 or 想想 can present a brief or tentative action and soften a suggestion. 看来看去 or 想来想去 foregrounds repetition or considering alternatives. It need not prove a long duration, thoroughness or exhaustion; the context supplies those details.
  • Sentence position: Brief reduplication often appears at the end of a request or statement of intent (让我再想想, let me think a bit more). A来A去 rarely serves as a polite request; instead, it describes an ongoing scene or summarizes a long process before stating what happened next.
  • Object placement: a clear learner model is to make the object a topic, as in 这几份方案,我们看来看去,还是拿不定主意. Do not label the whole construction inherently intransitive merely from its syllable count; judge the verb and the complete sentence.

Structural Limits and Common Learner Mistakes

Use three practical checks: choose an activity that can be interpreted as repeated, keep the repeated verb consistent, and make its topic or object clear.

  • Core form and longer forms: 走来走去 is four characters, while 商量来商量去 is longer. Both can be natural. The outline’s 四字格 label describes the core pattern, not a grammatical ban on every two-syllable verb.
  • Choose a repeatable reading: 走、想、商量 fit readily. Static identity such as 是 is not a useful starting model. A normally one-time event may need an imaginative or special context for repetition; semantic fit matters more than declaring whole word classes impossible.
  • Keep the topic clear: 这件事我想来想去,还是觉得应该再讨论一下 is easy to follow. Use an established construction with the chosen verb rather than attaching an arbitrary noun after 去 and assuming it will be interpreted as the object.

The discussion examples below compare 商量来商量去 with the shorter 谈来谈去. Both describe repeated discussion without agreement. The second is a concise alternative, not a correction of an invalid two-syllable verb.

我们商量来商量去,还是没有统一意见。

wǒmen shāngliang lái shāngliang qù , háishì méiyǒu tǒngyī yìjiàn .

We discussed it back and forth but still did not reach an agreement.

A longer repeated-verb form using 商量. It conveys repeated discussion naturally; compare the shorter 谈来谈去.

我们谈来谈去,还是没有统一意见。

wǒmen tán lái tán qù , háishì méiyǒu tǒngyī yìjiàn .

We talked it over and over but still did not reach an agreement.

A concise four-character version with 谈. It preserves the same lack-of-agreement meaning.

Frequently asked questions

Can the two verbs in A来A去 be different single-syllable words?

In the productive A来A去 model, repeat A. Related lexical idioms may use different components, such as 翻来覆去 or 眉来眼去. Their components are not all verbs—眉 and 眼 are nouns—so learn their established forms and meanings rather than applying a free verb-substitution rule.

Can I add 了 or 过 inside or right after A来A去?

Do not insert particles mechanically inside the repeated frame. At the end, distinguish aspect and sentence-final particles: 你别再走来走去了 is natural, with 了 helping close the request to stop. A following result clause is one way to express completion, but not the only possible location for 了 in a sentence containing A来A去.

Does A来A去 always express annoyance or a waste of time?

Not always. While phrases like 说来说去 or 争来争去 often imply fruitless repetition, combinations like 想来想去, 算来算去, or 挑来挑去 very frequently describe careful deliberation that leads to a deliberate final choice.
