HSK 5 Conjunctive Adverbs: 便 (biàn) and 一旦 (yīdàn)
The HSK 5 outline groups 便 and 一旦 as conjunctive adverbs. 便 links a following action or result, often with a more written tone than 就. 一旦 frames an event as the condition that triggers what follows, meaning “once” or “if it happens”; the event need not be sudden or a major crisis.

雨一停,大家便出发了。
Correct. 便 appears after the subject 大家 (dàjiā) to link the stopping of the rain with the immediate departure.
× 收到通知以后,便他马上赶去了公司。
Incorrect in this ordinary result clause: the explicit subject 他 comes before the adverb 便. Use 他便马上赶去了公司.
Corrected example: 收到通知以后,他便马上赶去了公司。

What Are Conjunctive Adverbs?
The supplied HSK 5 outline lists 便 and 一旦 under 关联副词. Both help link parts of a sentence, but they have different positions: 一旦 introduces the condition; 便 belongs with the following predicate. Do not assume that every word in one grammatical category must occupy the same position.
Using 便 (biàn) for Immediate Sequence and Result
As a conjunctive adverb, 便 means 'then', 'right away', or 'consequently'. Functionally, it behaves very much like the high-frequency adverb 就 (jiù). It shows that a second action happens immediately after a first action, or that a result naturally follows a stated condition. However, 便 carries a noticeably more formal, literary, or written tone (书面语) than 就.
雨一停,大家便出发了。
Correct. 便 appears after the subject 大家 (dàjiā) to link the stopping of the rain with the immediate departure.
In the example above, 一 (yī, 'as soon as') in the first clause pairs with 便 in the second clause to show an immediate sequence. 便 can also pair with conditional markers such as 只要 (zhǐyào, 'as long as') or 如果 (rúguǒ, 'if') to introduce the outcome.
只要你坚持练习,发音便会越来越标准。
The first clause uses 只要; the second places 便 after 发音 and before 会 to link the condition with the predicted result.
Using 一旦 (yīdàn) for Critical Conditions
一旦 means “once an event happens” or “if it happens,” focusing on that event as the condition for a consequence. It often highlights a consequential change, but can also introduce an ordinary practical condition, as in 一旦有消息,请联系我.
就 and 便 are common partners in the result clause, but neither is compulsory. 一旦有消息,请联系我 is complete without either. Choose a partner when it helps make the link explicit, rather than filling a required slot.
他一旦做出决定,就很难改变主意。
Correct. 一旦 introduces a significant threshold condition, paired with 就 (jiù) in the result clause.
信任一旦失去,便很难再重新建立。
Correct. Combines 一旦 in the condition clause with 便 in the result clause for a cohesive written style.
In the trust example, 一旦 frames the loss as the condition, while 便 introduces the difficulty of rebuilding trust. 很难 means “very difficult,” not “impossible”; the sentence does not say the loss is irreversible.
Useful Contrasts and Register Limits
- 便 vs. 就: In conjunctive patterns, 便 and 就 are largely interchangeable in meaning, but they differ in register. Use 就 in everyday conversation and general writing; reserve 便 for narratives, essays, formal reports, or set phrases. Note that 就 also has other functions (such as emphasizing focus or earliness in standalone sentences) where 便 cannot always substitute in casual speech.
- 一旦 versus 一……就……: 一……就…… readily describes a close sequence, such as setting off when the rain stops. 一旦 emphasizes the condition being met. Both may occur in recurring patterns; choose according to the relationship you intend, not a rule that one is only temporal and the other always dramatic.
- Subject placement with 一旦 vs. 便: 一旦 is flexible and frequently appears after the subject of the first clause (他一旦...) or at the very beginning of the condition clause before a subject. 便 is strictly bound to the pre-verbal adverb position and must come after the subject of its clause.
Common Learner Mistake: Misplacing 便 Before the Subject
Because English speakers often translate 便 as 'then' or 'so', it is tempting to place 便 at the very start of the second clause, right after the comma and before the subject. In Chinese grammar, however, 便 is an adverb (副词), not a clause-initial conjunction like 所以 (suǒyǐ). When the second clause has an explicit subject, 便 must stand between the subject and the verb phrase.
× 收到通知以后,便他马上赶去了公司。
Incorrect in this ordinary result clause: the explicit subject 他 comes before the adverb 便. Use 他便马上赶去了公司.
Corrected example: 收到通知以后,他便马上赶去了公司。
收到通知以后,他便马上赶去了公司。
The subject 他 comes before 便, which links the notice to his immediate action.
If the subject of the second clause is omitted because it is identical to the first clause, 便 will appear right after the comma—not because it moved ahead of the subject, but because the subject is invisible.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use 便 in everyday spoken Chinese?
就 is the usual everyday choice. 便 often adds a written or narrative voice, including in speech delivered in that style. Choose it when that tone fits; it is a register choice rather than a grammatical ban on conversation.
Can 一旦 be used for single past events that happened smoothly?
Past time itself does not rule 一旦 out; its function is to frame an event as the condition for what follows. For a plain account of getting home and immediately sleeping, 昨天我一到家就睡了 is the straightforward choice. Choose by the conditional or sequential meaning, not by whether the event was smooth or happened only once.
Why are 便 and 一旦 listed together in the HSK 5 outline?
In the 2025-11 edition of the HSK outline (labeled for 2026-07 implementation), both words are grouped under Level 5 conjunctive adverbs (关联副词) because they connect clauses while functioning grammatically as adverbs. Note that syllabus levels define the reference outline scope rather than guaranteeing which exam version a specific test center administers on a given date.
