HSK 4 Grammar: 把 Sentences with Action-Measure and Duration Complements
This HSK 4 把 pattern measures the action or change affecting an object: how many times it happens, how long it lasts, or how far a scheduled time is shifted. The measure follows the verb, with 了 when appropriate.

请把这份合同再检查一遍。
Polite request using the action-measure complement 一遍 after the verb 检查.
× 我已经把三遍课文读了。
For the intended three readings, 三遍 measures 读 and belongs after it: 我已经把课文读了三遍了. 三遍课文 does not clearly express this action count. The problem is the attachment of the measure, not the absence of all material after 读, since 了 is already present.
Corrected example: 我已经把课文读了三遍了。

Why Use Complements After the Verb in a 把 Sentence?
In the HSK 4 syllabus, under special sentence types for the 把 (bǎ) construction, learners encounter the pattern: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Action-Measure Complement / Duration Complement.
A 把 sentence presents an object before the verb and explains how it is handled or affected. A bare verb is usually insufficient in an isolated basic sentence, but support can come from several parts of the construction, not only from a following complement. This lesson practices one clear way to build a full predicate: adding an action count or a time measure.
While other patterns use resultative words or the aspect particle 了 (le) alone, this pattern completes the verb phrase by measuring the action—either by counting its occurrences (action-measure complement, 动量补语) or by stating how long the action or its resulting state lasts (duration complement, 时量补语). Moving the object after 把 leaves the position right after the verb completely free for these measurements.
Subform 1: Verb + Action-Measure Complement (动量补语)
An action-measure complement consists of a number and a verbal measure word, such as 遍 (biàn, complete times through from start to finish), 次 (cì, occurrences), or 下 (xià, quick or light actions). In a 把 sentence, this complement sits directly after the verb (or after Verb + 了 for completed actions).
This pattern can describe a counted action or request one. 请把合同检查一遍 is a natural request without 了; 我把课文读了三遍 reports three completed readings. Choose 了 according to aspect and the full clause, not simply whether the sentence is a command or whether its time is past.
请把这份合同再检查一遍。
Polite request using the action-measure complement 一遍 after the verb 检查.
我已经把课文读了三遍了。
Completed statement where 了 follows the verb 读 and precedes the action-measure complement 三遍.
喝之前,你要先把瓶子摇两下。
Instruction using the action-measure complement 两下 to indicate quick physical movements.
Subform 2: Verb + Duration Complement (时量补语)
A duration complement expresses a length of time, such as 十分钟 (shí fēnzhōng, ten minutes), 两个小时 (liǎng gè xiǎoshí, two hours), or 三天 (sān tiān, three days). Just like the action-measure complement, it is placed immediately after the verb (or Verb + 了).
The time measure can describe an action or a maintained state: soaking an item for ten minutes or keeping files for three days. With 推迟, it measures how much later an event is scheduled. 推迟两个小时 means a two-hour shift, not that the act of postponing or a temporary state lasted two hours.
经理把会议推迟了两个小时。
两个小时 measures the shift in the meeting time: it is scheduled two hours later. It does not measure how long the manager spent making the postponement.
你能不能把这些资料保留三天?
能不能 forms the affirmative-negative question before 把; 三天 gives the duration after 保留.
Word Order Contrast and Common Learner Errors
In standard sentences without 把, combining a direct object with an action-measure or duration complement can feel awkward. Learners often have to repeat the verb, place the complement between the verb and a non-specific object, or rearrange the sentence. Using 把 solves this cleanly: the specific object moves before the verb, and the measurement stays right after the verb.
× 经理把两个小时会议推迟了。
For a two-hour postponement, put the time measure after 推迟: 经理把会议推迟了两个小时. 两个小时的会议 would instead describe a meeting lasting two hours, not the amount of postponement.
Corrected example: 经理把会议推迟了两个小时。
- Keep the object definite or already known in context (e.g., 这份合同, 课文, 会议).
- Negation of the whole action and modal verbs normally precede 把: 别把瓶子摇两下就放下. Some adverbs can appear after the object: 请把这份合同再检查一遍, or 先把合同检查一遍. Place 再 or 先 according to what it modifies; do not apply one position rule to every adverb.
- Keep the verb followed immediately by the complement (or 了 + complement) so the sentence has a complete predicate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose between 遍 (biàn), 次 (cì), and 下 (xià) after the verb?
Use 遍 when the action goes through the entire object from beginning to end (like reading a text or checking a contract). Use 次 for simple counts of an event without emphasizing the start-to-finish process. Use 下 for brief, light, or quick physical actions (like shaking a bottle or pressing a button).
Where do negation words or modal verbs go in this pattern?
Negation words like 没 (méi) or 别 (bié) and modal verbs like 要 (yào) or 能 (néng) always go before 把, never directly in front of the main verb.
Do I always need 了 (le) between the verb and the complement?
No. 了 is useful for presenting a measured action as realized, as in 我把课文读了三遍. A request such as 请把合同检查一遍 needs no 了. Its use depends on aspect and sentence structure; do not turn “past versus future” or “statement versus command” into an absolute rule.
