HSK 4 Ba-Sentences with Verb + 了 (主语+把+宾语+动词+了)

With suitable verbs and context, Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + 了 can present an object as dealt with, or request that it be dealt with. Learn the verb’s meaning and the situation together: 了 is not simply past tense and does not by itself prove total consumption, destruction or a particular physical result.

Subject 把 Object Verb 了
Example sentence

请把电视关了,弟弟要睡觉了。

Qǐng bǎ diànshì guān le, dìdi yào shuìjiào le.

Please turn off the TV; my younger brother is going to sleep.

Correct imperative usage. The subject is omitted in a polite request, and 关了 indicates completing the action of turning the TV off.

A common mistake

× 我把明天的机票退。

Wǒ bǎ míngtiān de jīpiào tuì.

Intended: I canceled tomorrow's flight ticket.

Incorrect. A Ba-sentence cannot end with a bare monosyllabic verb like 退. Add 了 at the end, as shown in the corrected example.

Corrected example: 因为临时有会议,我只好把明天的机票退了。

Core Meaning and Structure

One of the earliest rules learners hear about the Chinese Ba-sentence (把字句) is that the main verb cannot stand completely alone at the end of the clause. While many Ba-sentences require detailed resultative or directional complements after the verb, the HSK 4 syllabus highlights a much more compact option: following the verb directly with the particle 了.

Subject 把 Object Verb 了

In the examples, 了 helps present an action as realized or points to the handling that is requested. Its interpretation depends on the construction and context; it need not always be analysed simultaneously as both verb-aspect 了 and a sentence-final change marker. Do not infer a particular physical result merely from the particle.

妹妹早就把桌子上的苹果吃了。

Mèimei zǎo jiù bǎ zhuōzi shang de píngguǒ chī le.

My younger sister ate up the apple on the table a long time ago.

Correct statement usage. Here 吃了 implies the definite apple has been completely eaten.

他太忙了,居然把这件重要的事忘了。

Tā tài máng le, jūrán bǎ zhè jiàn zhòngyào de shì wàng le.

He was so busy that he unexpectedly forgot this important matter.

Correct statement usage with an unintentional verb (忘, to forget).

Which Verbs Work in This Pattern?

Not every verb becomes natural after 把 merely by adding 了. The verb, object and context need to support a clear reading of what happened to the object. Some verbs already suggest removal or a state change, while others rely more on the situation. The following groups give common examples, not an exhaustive test based only on a verb’s dictionary definition.

  • Verbs used for consumption or use, such as 吃 (eat), 喝 (drink) and 用 (use). 用 does not inherently mean “use up”; the object and context contribute to the reading.
  • Verbs of removal, cancellation, or parting: 扔 (to throw away), 卖 (to sell off), 退 (to return/cancel), 辞 (to quit/resign from), 删 (to delete).
  • Verbs of switching or closing: 关 (to turn off/close), 锁 (to lock).
  • Verbs for loss, forgetting or dropping, such as 忘, 丢 and 摔. 摔 can describe dropping or throwing; breakage is clearer with a result such as 摔碎 or 摔坏.

是谁把客厅里的那个杯子摔了?

Shì shéi bǎ kètīng lǐ de nàge bēizi shuāi le?

Who dropped that cup in the living room?

The object 那个杯子 is identifiable. 摔了 reports what happened to it; context may suggest damage, but the wording alone does not explicitly say it broke. Compare 摔碎了 when breakage is the intended result.

因为临时有会议,我只好把明天的机票退了。

Yīnwèi línshí yǒu huìyì, wǒ zhǐhǎo bǎ míngtiān de jīpiào tuì le.

Because an unexpected meeting came up, I had no choice but to cancel tomorrow's flight ticket.

Correct statement usage showing how a specific item (tomorrow's ticket) was handled.

Statements vs. Imperative Requests

A common misconception is that 了 always equates to past tense. In the Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + 了 structure, the sentence can either report an event that has already happened or issue a command or suggestion for the listener to carry out right away.

In imperative sentences (commands, requests, or advice), the subject (such as 你) is often omitted or preceded by polite markers like 请 (please) or modals like 应该 (should). Here, 了 emphasizes the desired final state—getting the object dealt with and out of the way.

Useful Contrasts and Common Learner Errors

Compared to a standard Subject + Verb + Object sentence, using 把 places the known object before the verb to highlight what happens to that specific item. However, once you choose the 把 structure, two strict rules apply.

First, never drop the 了 and leave a bare monosyllabic verb at the end of the sentence. Without 了 (or another valid structural element taught in other patterns), the sentence sounds unfinished and ungrammatical.

For an ordinary denial of a completed event, put 没 or 没有 before 把 and normally omit the realized-action 了: 我没把那封信扔掉. A warning such as 别把杯子摔了 can still use 了 for the outcome to avoid. Negation is not formed by one mechanical rule that preserves or deletes every sentence-final 了 in all contexts.

× 我把那封信没扔了。

Wǒ bǎ nà fēng xìn méi rēng le.

Intended: I didn't throw away that letter.

For the intended ordinary denial, place 没 before 把 and do not mechanically retain a realized-action 了 after the verb. The model uses 我没把那封信扔掉 to say that the letter was not thrown away.

Corrected example: 我没把那封信扔掉,它还在抽屉里呢。

我没把那封信扔掉,它还在抽屉里呢。

Wǒ méi bǎ nà fēng xìn rēngdiào, tā hái zài chōuti lǐ ne.

I didn't throw away that letter; it is still in the drawer.

没 precedes 把. This ordinary negative uses 扔掉 without a realized-action 了: it denies that the letter was thrown away. Compare the positive 我把那封信扔了.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 了 alone enough after the verb when teachers say Ba-sentences need other elements?

Verb + 了 is one possible complete predicate with suitable words and context. It is not a repair that can be added mechanically to any verb after 把. Other patterns may supply a result, direction, repetition or another modifier; completeness is a property of the whole predicate.

Can Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + 了 be used for future actions or commands?

Yes. In requests, commands, or plans (for example, 'Please turn off the TV' or 'I am going to sell this old car'), 了 marks the completion of the disposal action you want or intend to achieve, not past tense.

Can I use an unspecific object like 'an apple' after 把 in this pattern?

Generally no. The object after 把 should be known or specific to the speaker and listener, such as 'that apple', 'the apple on the table', or a contextually understood item like 'the TV'.
