Using 要是……(就)……,否则…… to State a Condition and Its Alternative
This HSK 4 pattern links a possible condition to an expected result, then uses 否则 to warn what may happen if the condition or recommended action is not met. Learn its form, when 就 may be omitted, and how it differs from the shorter pattern ending in 否则.

要是你今晚有时间,就把报告的最后一部分改完,否则明天交上去会很赶。
Correct. The alternative consequence is the time pressure if the report is not finished tonight.

Meaning and shape
要是 means “if” or “suppose that.” It introduces a possible condition; it does not say that the condition is already true. The following clause gives the result expected if that condition holds. 就 often marks this result and makes the condition–result link easy to follow, but the outline allows it to be omitted. 否则 means “otherwise” or “if not.” It introduces a consequence associated with the condition or action not being fulfilled. The complete pattern therefore moves from possibility, to expected result, to an alternative consequence.
- 要是 + condition: name a possible situation or circumstance.
- (就) + result: state what is expected or appropriate if the condition holds. 就 is optional here.
- 否则 + alternative: state what may happen if the relevant condition or action is not met.
When to use it
Use the full pattern when you want to explain both what follows if a condition is met and what may happen otherwise. It is useful for plans, reminders, advice, and practical warnings. The clause after 否则 is often negative or undesirable, but it need not be a dramatic threat: it can simply identify the other likely outcome. Read its connection from context. Sometimes it refers to not meeting the 要是 condition; in advice, it may refer more directly to not carrying out the suggested action. The construction presents a practical consequence, not a promise that the result is certain.
要是你今晚有时间,就把报告的最后一部分改完,否则明天交上去会很赶。
Correct. The alternative consequence is the time pressure if the report is not finished tonight.
要是我们现在出发,就能赶上七点的公交车,否则只能等下一班。
Here 否则 supplies the alternative if we do not leave now or in time, as specified by context.
要是下午下雨,把活动改到室内,否则大家会淋湿。
Correct. This is advice followed by the consequence of not following it. 就 is omitted, which is permitted in this pattern.
要是文件还没有备份,就先别关电脑,否则刚才的修改可能会丢失。
Correct. 否则 refers to the consequence of shutting down before the file is backed up.
Forming natural sentences
The condition and result can be statements about a situation, as in having time or leaving now. They can also give advice or instructions, as in changing an event’s location or waiting before shutting down a computer. In that use, 否则 commonly points to the consequence of ignoring the advice. Make the intended link clear: if the alternative consequence seems to refer to the wrong clause, name the action or condition more explicitly.
- Keep the condition after 要是 and before the expected result.
- Use 就 before the result when it helps the sentence flow; do not treat it as mandatory in this outline point.
- Put 否则 before the alternative consequence. That consequence should make sense as the outcome if the relevant condition or action is not fulfilled.
- Use a complete clause after 否则 when the alternative needs explanation; a shorter phrase such as 等下一班 is natural when context makes the omitted details clear.
Contrast with related patterns
要是……,(就)…… expresses a condition and its result without explicitly adding an “otherwise” consequence. The pattern in this lesson includes that relationship and adds a second branch with 否则. 否则 can also appear after a separate statement or instruction without 要是; that shorter form belongs to a neighboring outline point. This lesson focuses on the combined pattern listed here, rather than treating all conditional constructions as interchangeable.
A practical way to check your sentence
Check what 否则 refers to: failure of the first condition, or failure to follow the middle advice? In the rain example it means not moving indoors if it rains, not that a dry afternoon makes everyone wet. The conditional framing does not itself assert whether the condition is true. Keep the intended reasoning clear instead of negating the nearest clause mechanically.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave out 就?
Yes. 就 is optional in the outline’s pattern. Including it often makes the result clause more explicit, while omitting it can still produce a natural sentence.
Does 否则 always mean “if the 要是 condition is false”?
Not necessarily. In a straightforward conditional statement it often gives the outcome if the condition is not met. In advice or instructions, it may instead point to what happens if the recommended action is not carried out. Make that link clear from context.
Can I use the pattern in a question?
Yes. For example, 要是你想参加,就今天报名,否则我们怎么安排座位呢? gives a condition and an instruction, then asks rhetorically how seats could otherwise be arranged. The question must preserve a clear reference for 否则.
