HSK 4 Fixed Pattern: X是X (Concession and Clear Distinction)

The fixed pattern X是X (X shì X) primarily expresses concession in spoken and informal written Chinese: the speaker admits that X is true before introducing a reservation or contrast with words like 就是, 但是, or 可是. In paired clauses with nouns, it can also draw a strict boundary between two things.

Repeated adjective or verb (X) 是 Repeated adjective or verb (X) , Contrasting clause (就是 / 但是 / 可是...)
Example sentence

这件外套好看是好看,就是有点儿贵。

Zhè jiàn wàitào hǎokàn shì hǎokàn, jiùshì yǒudiǎnr guì.

This coat is nice-looking, sure, it's just a bit expensive.

Adjective 好看 repeated in the X是X frame, followed by a gentle reservation introduced by 就是.

A common mistake

× 这双鞋舒服是舒服,所以我马上买了。

Zhè shuāng xié shūfu shì shūfu, suǒyǐ wǒ mǎshàng mǎi le.

Intended: These shoes were comfortable, so I bought them right away.

Awkward for the intended straightforward causal explanation: 舒服是舒服 usually sets up a concession rather than simply stating the reason. The next sentence removes the repetition while keeping the same reason and purchase outcome. In a different dialogue, repetition could have another contextual purpose.

Corrected example: 这双鞋很舒服,所以我马上买了。

Core Meaning and Pragmatic Force

In the HSK 4 syllabus under fixed patterns (固定格式), X是X is a high-frequency structure used primarily to make a concession.

When someone makes a claim or suggests an idea, repeating a key word around 是 lets you acknowledge that the point is valid on the surface, while signaling that a 'but' is coming right after. In English, it often corresponds to 'X is indeed X, but...', 'It is true that X, only...', or 'Sure, X, however...'. Pragmatically, it softens disagreement: instead of flatly rejecting what the other person said, you grant them their point first and then state your reservation.

Structure and What Fills the X Slot

The basic form repeats the same predicate core around 是. The repeated core is often an adjective, verb or short verb phrase. Additional aspect or degree material can appear with the second occurrence, so the two sides need not be identical character for character.

Repeated adjective or verb (X) 是 Repeated adjective or verb (X) , Contrasting clause (就是 / 但是 / 可是...)
  • Adjectives often fill X, as in 好看是好看. Degree wording is not universally forbidden: 好看是很好看,就是贵了点 acknowledges that it is indeed very attractive before raising the price reservation. Practise the simpler repeated form first.
  • Verbs and short verb phrases: Action verbs, cognitive verbs, and verbs with aspect markers can fill X (for example, 知道是知道 or 去过是去过). If the aspect marker 了 is used for a completed action, it is most naturally placed at the very end of the second X (答应是答应了).
  • A contrasting follow-up often makes the concession explicit, using 就是, 但是, 可是 or 不过. In conversation, the reservation may be left unstated when it is obvious from the context.

方法好是好,可是执行起来太难了。

Fāngfǎ hǎo shì hǎo, kěshì zhíxíng qǐlái tài nán le.

The method is good, true, but it is too difficult to carry out in practice.

Single-syllable adjective 好 repeated, followed by 可是 to highlight a practical difficulty.

那家餐厅我去过是去过,但早就忘了具体的地址。

Nà jiā cāntīng wǒ qùguo shì qùguo, dàn zǎo jiù wàng le jùtǐ de dìzhǐ.

I have indeed been to that restaurant before, but I long ago forgot the exact address.

Verb plus experiential aspect marker 去过 repeated to concede past experience before stating a limitation.

他答应是答应了,不过还没开始准备。

Tā dāying shì dāying le, bùguò hái méi kāishǐ zhǔnbèi.

He did agree to it, though he hasn't started preparing yet.

Disyllabic verb 答应 repeated, with the aspect marker 了 placed at the end of the whole X是X unit.

Secondary Usage: Drawing Clear Boundaries

When X is filled by a noun or nominal phrase and paired in parallel with another clause (X是X,Y是Y), the meaning shifts from concession to strict categorization. Rather than meaning 'although', this paired format means 'X is one thing, and Y is another—they should not be mixed up.'

公私要分明,工作是工作,生活是生活。

Gōng sī yào fēnmíng, gōngzuò shì gōngzuò, shēnghuó shì shēnghuó.

Public and private matters should be kept clearly separate: work is work, and personal life is personal life.

Noun-based parallel use (X是X,Y是Y) used to draw a firm boundary between two domains.

Register, Restrictions, and Helpful Contrasts

X是X is particularly natural in conversation and writing with a conversational tone. 虽然……但是…… offers another concessive framing and is also common in formal writing. For the basic pattern practised here, put the subject before the repeated predicate: 这件外套好看是好看,就是有点儿贵.

You should also distinguish X是X from the neighboring conversational pattern X就X(点儿)吧. While X是X admits a fact in order to pivot to a drawback ('it is expensive, true, but...'), X就X吧 expresses resigned acceptance or compromise ('if it is expensive, then so be it').

If you simply want to say that you bought shoes because they were comfortable, a plain adjective plus 所以 expresses that meaning directly. Repeating 舒服是舒服 normally invites the listener to expect a reservation. The issue in the following learner example is the intended discourse effect, not a universal ban on 所以 anywhere after X是X.

这双鞋很舒服,所以我马上买了。

Zhè shuāng xié hěn shūfu, suǒyǐ wǒ mǎshàng mǎi le.

These shoes were comfortable, so I bought them right away.

A direct causal statement preserving the intended meaning of “这双鞋舒服是舒服,所以我马上买了。”. To practise a concession instead, use one of the earlier X是X examples with a genuine reservation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put 很 or 太 inside the X是X pattern, like 很好看是很好看?

The basic form 好看是好看 is a useful starting point, but degree wording is not categorically excluded. For example, 好看是很好看,就是贵了点 is natural. Choose a form that fits the emphasis rather than mechanically banning 很 from the repeated predicate.

Can X是X be used together with 虽然 in the same clause?

For a concise sentence, choose either 虽然……但是…… or X是X followed by a reservation. Although their meanings overlap, overlap alone does not make combining them a grammatical error; a speaker can add 虽然 for explicit concessive emphasis in a suitable context.

Can I end a sentence after X是X without adding a 'but' clause?

Yes, when the listener can infer the reservation from context: 好是好…… can communicate hesitation by itself. When writing a self-contained teaching example, stating the reservation makes the intended concession clearer. This is a clarity choice, not a rule banning an implicit reservation in every written dialogue.
