Using “X是X,就是/不过……” to qualify a judgment
This HSK 4 pattern first grants or acknowledges a point, then adds a limitation, drawback, or reservation. Learn how the repeated element works and how 就是 and 不过 differ in tone.

这家店的菜好吃是好吃,就是分量有点儿少。
就是 introduces a specific, conversational reservation about portion size.

Meaning: acknowledge, then qualify
The outline places this pattern under HSK 4 compound sentences of contrast. Its basic move is to grant a point before qualifying it: “X is indeed X, but …” The second part commonly mentions a shortcoming, inconvenience, or reservation. The qualification does not cancel the first statement; both parts remain true. The cited outline establishes this topic and level only, not which examination version is currently administered.
The repeated X names the point being acknowledged. Repetition can convey acceptance without a full endorsement. The examples here are evaluative statements, but a following question can also express a reservation. X是X is not itself a question marker. Tone depends on the context rather than being automatically polite.
这家店的菜好吃是好吃,就是分量有点儿少。
就是 introduces a specific, conversational reservation about portion size.
Build the pattern
Repeat the same meaningful predicate around 是: 好吃是好吃, 方便是方便, 有用是有用. A longer topic can precede it. A noun can also be repeated when a real relationship is being conceded: 朋友是朋友,不过这件事还得按规定办 acknowledges friendship before insisting on the rules. Merely repeating 味道, 内容 or 功能 does not add the unstated meanings “tasty,” “good content” or “useful functions.”
就是 often introduces the speaker’s specific reservation, with a conversational feel similar to “the only thing is …”. 不过 foregrounds a contrast more directly, like “however” or “but.” In this construction, either can introduce a limitation; the choice changes emphasis and flow, not the basic acknowledgment-plus-qualification relation.
See the qualification in context
Notice that each first part grants something positive or expected. The ending then narrows the evaluation rather than declaring the first part false.
坐高铁方便是方便,不过票价比大巴贵一些。
不过 makes the fare contrast explicit.
这门课有用是有用,就是上课时间不太方便。
就是 introduces a reservation that qualifies the positive evaluation.
这部手机好用是好用,不过电池不太耐用。
不过 introduces a direct limitation on the otherwise positive point.
Useful contrast and common pitfalls
Do not treat 就是 and 不过 as interchangeable in every sentence: 就是 often presents a particular reservation in a more conversational way, while 不过 makes the contrast more explicit. Both can work in this listed pattern when the following clause genuinely qualifies the first part. A plain follow-up that adds unrelated information may not create the intended concessive meaning.
- Make the two X elements match; changing the repeated word can obscure what is being acknowledged.
- Put the drawback or reservation after 就是 or 不过, where it limits the first evaluation.
- Use a balanced tone when the first clause is positive and the second names a modest drawback.
Frequently asked questions
What can X be?
X is the point being conceded, often an adjective or verb phrase: 好吃, 方便 or 有用. A noun can work when its identity or relationship is genuinely being acknowledged, as in 朋友是朋友. Do not expect arbitrary noun repetition to express an unstated positive quality.
Does 就是 mean the same thing as 不过 here?
Both can introduce a qualification in this pattern. 就是 often sounds more conversational and singles out a reservation; 不过 tends to mark contrast more explicitly.
Can I use this pattern to ask a question?
Yes, if the follow-up question supplies a meaningful reservation. For example, 方便是方便,不过你愿意付这个价钱吗? concedes convenience, then questions willingness to pay. X是X itself does not mark a question.
