Using 不过 to Add a Contrast

不过 connects a statement with a qualification or contrast. Learn how to form the pattern, choose a context, and distinguish it from the neighboring pattern 然而.

First clause ,不过 Contrasting or qualifying clause
Example sentence

今天有点儿冷,不过阳光很好。

Jīntiān yǒudiǎnr lěng, búguò yángguāng hěn hǎo.

It is a little cold today, but the sunshine is lovely.

不过 introduces a favorable counterpoint to the cold weather.

Meaning and use

In the listed pattern ……,不过……, 不过 introduces a second clause that qualifies, limits, or contrasts with the first. The first clause sets up an expectation; the second adds a relevant counterpoint. The relationship is often close to “but,” “though,” or “however,” depending on the sentence. The two clauses remain understandable as statements on their own.

今天有点儿冷,不过阳光很好。

Jīntiān yǒudiǎnr lěng, búguò yángguāng hěn hǎo.

It is a little cold today, but the sunshine is lovely.

不过 introduces a favorable counterpoint to the cold weather.

Translation: “It is a little cold today, but the sunshine is lovely.” The weather is cold, while the sunshine gives a favorable counterpoint.

Build the sentence

Present the first statement, then add a relevant contrast or qualification with 不过. A comma is common within one sentence, though a sentence boundary can also precede the contrasting statement in a longer text. The subject may be understood from context. 不过 requires no special verb form; event time and aspect come from the clause and context.

First clause ,不过 Contrasting or qualifying clause

这辆公交车很便宜,不过开得比较慢。

Zhè liàng gōngjiāochē hěn piányi, búguò kāi de bǐjiào màn.

This bus is inexpensive, but it runs relatively slowly.

The second clause qualifies the advantage in the first.

Translation: “This bus is inexpensive, but it runs relatively slowly.” The second clause qualifies the benefit stated in the first.

Choose a useful counterpoint

Use this pattern when you want to acknowledge one fact and then add a limitation, drawback, or contrasting circumstance. It works well when responding to a suggestion or describing a choice fairly: concede what is good, then mention what needs consideration. The contrast may be mild; 不过 can make the qualification sound less abrupt than a blunt rejection.

那家餐厅离我家很近,不过晚上常常要排队。

Nà jiā cāntīng lí wǒ jiā hěn jìn, búguò wǎnshang chángcháng yào páiduì.

That restaurant is very close to my home, but there is often a queue in the evening.

The second clause adds a practical drawback.

我看过这份报告,不过有几个地方还不太明白。

Wǒ kàn guo zhè fèn bàogào, búguò yǒu jǐ ge dìfang hái bú tài míngbai.

I have read this report, but there are a few parts I still do not quite understand.

Reading the report is true; the second clause limits the implication that it is fully understood.

Contrast with 然而

The neighboring outline point 然而 also marks contrast, but it is a separate listed pattern. In general, 不过 is natural in everyday conversation and can introduce a modest qualification. 然而 often sounds more formal or written and can mark a more explicit reversal. These are tendencies, not rigid rules: the best choice depends on tone and how strongly the second clause opposes the first. This lesson covers the 不过 pattern only.

  • For a conversational qualification after acknowledging a positive point, 不过 is often a natural choice.
  • For a more formal, explicit contrast, 然而 may fit better.
  • Neither connector makes unrelated clauses into a meaningful contrast; check that the second clause responds to the first.

Frequently asked questions

Can 不过 connect two positive statements?

Yes, when the second statement still qualifies or contrasts with the first. The counterpoint need not be negative; it needs to change or limit the expectation created by the first clause.

Can the second clause be a question?

Yes. For example, 我愿意帮忙,不过你能先把要求说清楚吗? acknowledges willingness to help, then asks for clarification that is needed first. The question still supplies a relevant qualification; 不过 does not itself turn the sentence into a question.

Can 不过 and 然而 always replace one another?

Not always. Many contrastive statements can use either, with a change in tone: 不过 often sounds more conversational and 然而 more formal. A choice that fits one text may sound awkward in another. They overlap rather than belonging to completely separate meanings.
