HSK 3 Frequency Adverbs: 总, 总是, 又, and 常常
This lesson explains how to express how often actions happen or repeat in Mandarin using the core frequency adverbs 总, 总是, 又, and 常常 from the HSK 3 outline.

总是 stands between the subject 他 and the verb phrase 很早起床 to show an invariable daily habit.

Core Meaning and Sentence Placement
In the HSK 3 grammar outline, the adverbs 总 (zǒng), 总是 (zǒngshì), 又 (yòu), and 常常 (chángcháng) are grouped under frequency adverbs (频率副词). While they all relate to how often or how repeatedly an action occurs, they are not interchangeable. Total consistency is expressed by 总 and 总是, high general frequency is expressed by 常常, and a single repeated occurrence is marked by 又.
The useful basic pattern is subject + frequency adverb + predicate. Scope can change the order: 又有人来了 means someone has come again. 总是他帮我的忙 is also grammatical, emphasizing who repeatedly helps, whereas 他总是帮我的忙 describes his repeated helpful action.
Expressing Constant Patterns with 总 and 总是
Both 总 and 总是 mean always or invariably. They indicate that a situation happens almost every time under given conditions, or that a person has a persistent habit. In most everyday contexts, 总是 and 总 share the same meaning, though 总是 is slightly more common in standard neutral statements, while single-syllable 总 feels brisk and conversational before a verb.
他总是很早起床。
总是 stands between the subject 他 and the verb phrase 很早起床 to show an invariable daily habit.
我最近总忘带钥匙。
总 directly precedes the verb 忘, expressing a frustratingly consistent pattern.
总 and 总是 can convey admiration or frustration about a persistent pattern; always need not be a mathematical claim of no exceptions. To say not always, 不总是 is valid: 他不总是迟到 means he is not always late. 不常 means not often, which is a different frequency claim.
Describing Regular Habits with 常常
常常 means often or frequently. It describes actions that happen many times over a period, without claiming that they happen every single time. Compared with 总是, 常常 is more objective and simply reports a regular routine or pastime.
周末我常常去图书馆看书。
常常 follows the subject 我 and precedes the serial verb phrase 去图书馆看书.
When negating a frequent habit (to say someone does not often do something), Mandarin speakers typically shorten 常常 to its single-syllable form and say 不常 (bù cháng), rather than 不常常. If the entire action is negated—meaning someone often skips doing something—常常 can precede 不 (for example, 常常不吃早饭, often skipping breakfast).
他不常喝咖啡。
When negating frequency directly, 常常 is normally shortened to 常 after 不.
Marking Single Repetitions with 又
While 总, 总是, and 常常 describe general frequency across time, 又 (yòu) focuses on a specific repetition: it means again. In frequency contexts, 又 indicates that an action or state which happened before has occurred one more time.
又 commonly marks a repetition that has happened or begun, but can also describe an expected future repetition: 明天他又要去北京了. A calendar cycle is one clear example, not the only one. It can even occur in a hypothetical repeated event, as in 如果你又忘了带钥匙,怎么办?
今天又下雨了。
又 + Verb + 了 marks a repetition that has already taken place or begun.
明天又是星期一了。
又 can be used for a future time when the repetition is an automatic calendar cycle.
Key Contrasts and Common Learner Mistakes
- 总 / 总是 versus 常常: The former present a persistent or characteristic pattern, often translated always; 常常 means often. These are ordinary language judgments, not exact percentages.
- 常常 describes repeated frequency across the relevant period, whether short or long; 又 points to a particular recurrence.
- Word order and focus: 他总是帮我 and 总是他帮我 are both possible, but organize the information differently. Use the first as the neutral habit pattern; use the second to emphasize who helps.
Compare the two grammatical sentences below. Choose the one that matches the intended focus rather than treating a subject before or after 总是 as automatically wrong.
总是他帮我的忙。
Grammatical, with focus on the identity of the helper. Compare 他总是帮我的忙, which makes his repeated action the main point.
他总是帮我的忙。
Correct placement: the frequency adverb 总是 sits between the subject 他 and the verb phrase 帮我的忙.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a strict difference between 总 and 总是?
In most HSK 3 sentences they mean the exact same thing ('always') and occupy the same position before the verb. 总是 is two syllables and fits smoothly in almost any clause, whereas 总 is slightly more colloquial and compact.
Can 又 ever be used for tomorrow or next week?
Yes. A calendar cycle is one example, but 又 also occurs with an expected plan, as in 明天他又要去北京了. For an invitation to repeat an activity, 再 is usually the right choice: 下周我们再去吧.
