HSK 1 Serial Verb Sentences: Expressing Manner and Means (连动句)

In this Mandarin pattern, the first verb phrase gives the manner or means of performing the action in the second phrase: for example, 坐车去学校, go to school by vehicle.

Subject Verb Phrase 1 (Manner / Means) Verb Phrase 2 (Main Action)
Example sentence

我坐车去学校。

Wǒ zuò chē qù xuéxiào.

I go to school by bus / car.

Correct: 坐车 (ride a vehicle) states the manner of transport first, followed by the main destination action 去学校 (go to school).

A common mistake

× 我去学校坐车。

Wǒ qù xuéxiào zuò chē.

Intended: I go to school by bus. Possible reading: I go to school to catch a vehicle.

Incorrect for expressing means of transport to school. Reversing the verbs turns the second verb into the purpose of going to school. Use 我坐车去学校 instead.

Corrected example: 我坐车去学校。

What Is a Manner-Focused Serial Verb Sentence?

In the HSK 1 grammar syllabus, serial verb sentences (连动句, liándòngjù) are special sentence types in which a single subject performs two or more verb phrases in one clause without conjunctions or pauses between them. This specific lesson covers the second core subtype at Level 1: sentences where the first action expresses the manner, means, or method of performing the second action.

In this pattern, the means comes before the main action: 坐车去学校 or 用汉语说话. English can put the corresponding phrase at the end. Learn the Chinese pattern directly rather than copying that order. Some descriptions analyze 用 phrases as coverb or prepositional phrases; this lesson follows the outline grouping and focuses on their position and meaning.

Core Sentence Structure and Word Order

To build this sentence pattern, place the subject first, followed immediately by the verb phrase that indicates the manner, tool, or transportation, and finish with the main action verb phrase.

Subject Verb Phrase 1 (Manner / Means) Verb Phrase 2 (Main Action)
  • First Verb Phrase (Manner / Means): Explains how the subject acts. At the beginner level, this most commonly involves taking transportation—such as 坐车 (zuò chē, take a vehicle/bus), 坐飞机 (zuò fēijī, take an airplane), or 打车 (dǎchē, take a taxi)—or using a tool or language with 用 (yòng, to use).
  • Second Verb Phrase (Main Action): Expresses the primary activity or destination movement, such as 去学校 (qù xuéxiào, go to school), 回家 (huí jiā, return home), 说话 (shuōhuà, speak), or 工作 (gōngzuò, work).

我坐车去学校。

Wǒ zuò chē qù xuéxiào.

I go to school by bus / car.

Correct: 坐车 (ride a vehicle) states the manner of transport first, followed by the main destination action 去学校 (go to school).

老师用汉语说话。

Lǎoshī yòng Hànyǔ shuōhuà.

The teacher speaks in Chinese.

Correct: 用汉语 (use Chinese) specifies the means or medium before the main action 说话 (speak).

哥哥用手机工作。

Gēge yòng shǒujī gōngzuò.

My older brother works using his mobile phone.

Correct: 用手机 (use a mobile phone) describes the tool or manner before the main verb 工作 (work).

Statements, Questions, and Negation

In everyday conversation, you will use this pattern not only to declare how you travel or work, but also to ask about someone's method or to clarify that you are not using a specific method. For yes-no questions, keep the exact same manner-before-action order and add the question particle 吗 (ma) at the end of the sentence.

你打车回家吗?

Nǐ dǎchē huí jiā ma?

Are you taking a taxi home?

Correct: 打车 (take a taxi) precedes the main action 回家 (go home), with 吗 forming a yes-no question.

To reject the proposed means or the whole plan, place 不 or 没 before the first verb phrase. 他不坐飞机去北京 may contrast flying with another mode, but does not itself guarantee that he will go. A negative before the later verb can have a different scope: 坐车不去学校 means taking a vehicle but not going to school, not going to school by a different means.

Subject Negation (不 / 没) Verb Phrase 1 (Manner / Means) Verb Phrase 2 (Main Action)

他不坐飞机去北京。

Tā bù zuò fēijī qù Běijīng.

He is not going to Beijing by plane.

Correct: The negation word 不 goes before the first verb phrase (坐飞机) to negate the method of travel.

Important Contrasts and Common Learner Errors

Order helps show the relationship between the two activities. 我坐车去学校 presents transport as the means of reaching school; 我去学校坐车 can instead mean going to school to catch a vehicle. Other word orders may form a different information structure, such as 老师说话用汉语. Compare meanings and context rather than treating every reversal as an error.

For “I go to school by bus”, use 我坐车去学校. 我去学校坐车 can be understood as going to school to take a vehicle there; it does not clearly present the vehicle as the way you reach school.

老师说话用汉语。

Lǎoshī shuōhuà yòng Hànyǔ.

Intended: The teacher speaks in Chinese.

老师说话用汉语 is possible when 说话 is the activity being discussed and 用汉语 specifies its medium. For the basic manner-before-action pattern, use 老师用汉语说话. The alternative is not automatically ungrammatical.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a word like 'and' or 'by' between the two verb phrases?

No. In a Chinese serial verb sentence, the two verb phrases are placed directly next to each other. Verbs like 坐 (zuò, ride/take) and 用 (yòng, use) already carry the meaning of 'by' or 'with', and adding a conjunction between the two actions is ungrammatical.

Why does 不 (bù) go before the first verb instead of the second verb?

For the basic meaning “not use this means to do that action”, negate before the first verb: 他不坐飞机去北京. Context may suggest a train instead, or rejection of the plan. Putting 不 before the second verb changes the scope and meaning; it is not a universal ban on that position.

How do I tell whether a serial verb sentence shows manner or purpose?

Look at the first verb phrase. If the first phrase describes a vehicle, tool, posture, or medium (like 坐车, 打车, or 用汉语) that happens simultaneously as the means of doing the second action, it expresses manner. If the first verb is a general movement like 去 (go) or 来 (come) followed by an action done upon arrival, it expresses purpose.
