# Locating Key Reading Information: A Step-by-Step Guide to R11 Passage Choice

This lesson teaches how to answer short reading comprehension items by identifying the question target, tracking cause-and-result connectors in the text, and distinguishing genuine text evidence from background details or unstated assumptions.

## 1. Anchor Your Reading in the Question Focus

The HSK 4 outline includes reading introductions to a person's background and character. Practise that skill with this HSKReady-authored sample. Read its question first, then look for the relationship it asks about in the passage.

大家为什么喜欢和小明一起工作？

dàjiā wèishénme xǐhuan hé Xiǎomíng yìqǐ gōngzuò ?

Why does everyone like working with Xiaoming?

Question prompt from the reading sample asking for the cause of everyone's preference.

This question asks why everyone likes working with Xiaoming. Two elements control your search: the interrogative word asking for a reason, and the target state of colleagues liking to work with him. You are not looking for just any true statement about Xiaoming; you are specifically looking for the cause behind his coworkers' positive attitude.

## 2. Trace Cause and Result in the Passage

Rather than scanning for isolated nouns or verbs, look at how the sentences in the reading sample are logically linked. Chinese short passages frequently place the reason first and introduce the consequence or conclusion with a result marker.

cause / reason clause ，所以 result / outcome clause 。

所以大家都喜欢和他一起工作。

suǒyǐ dàjiā dōu xǐhuan hé tā yìqǐ gōngzuò .

so everyone likes working with him.

Result clause introduced by the connector, matching the target of the question prompt.

In this passage, 所以 introduces the result that everyone likes working with Xiaoming. Read the preceding linked descriptions—工作很认真 and 对同事也很热情—as the reasons the writer gives for that result. In other passages, the relevant reason may span more than the immediately preceding clause; check the whole connection.

他工作很认真，对同事也很热情

tā gōngzuò hěn rènzhēn , duì tóngshì yě hěn rèqíng

He works very conscientiously, and is also very warm toward his colleagues

Key evidence clause stating the two reasons that lead to the result.

他工作认真，对人热情

tā gōngzuò rènzhēn , duì rén rèqíng

He works conscientiously and is warm toward people

Correct answer (A). It accurately summarizes the two causal clauses in the passage.

Answer A summarizes his work attitude and his treatment of colleagues. In this workplace context, 对人热情 describes the interpersonal quality shown in 对同事也很热情. It does not prove a claim about every person he meets in every situation. Accept a paraphrase only when its intended scope fits the evidence.

## 3. Separate Background Information from Direct Causes

A common trap in reading comprehension is choosing an option just because it repeats a vocabulary item from the first sentence. Look at how the passage in the reading sample opens:

小明大学毕业以后在一家公司工作。

Xiǎomíng dàxué bìyè yǐhòu zài yì jiā gōngsī gōngzuò .

After graduating from university, Xiaoming works at a company.

Opening sentence of the passage; it provides chronological and workplace background rather than the reason colleagues like him.

× 他刚毕业

tā gāng bìyè

He just graduated

Incorrect answer choice (B) for this question. It misuses a keyword from the background sentence and adds an unsupported time detail; replace with the supported cause in A.

Corrected example: 他工作认真，对人热情

Learners who rely on isolated keyword matching spot the word for graduating in the opening sentence and immediately select option B. However, this opening sentence only establishes the timeline and setting: after graduating from university, Xiaoming works at a company. First, it does not say he graduated just recently. Second, and more importantly, graduating is background context, not the reason his coworkers enjoy working with him. Always verify whether a detail in the passage actually answers the question's causal focus.

## 4. Eliminate Unsupported Workplace Assumptions

The remaining distractors in the reading sample test whether you can separate what is actually written in the passage from outside associations triggered by the topic.

× 他是经理

tā shì jīnglǐ

He is a manager

Incorrect answer choice (C) for this question. The passage never mentions his job title; replace with the supported cause in A.

Corrected example: 他工作认真，对人热情

× 他有很多钱

tā yǒu hěn duō qián

He has a lot of money

Incorrect answer choice (D) for this question. The passage makes no mention of his income or wealth; replace with the supported cause in A.

Corrected example: 他工作认真，对人热情

Because the passage mentions working at a company, learners who only catch the workplace theme might guess option C (that he is a manager) or option D (that he has a lot of money). Neither concept appears anywhere in the text. The passage describes his work attitude and interpersonal warmth, not his job title or personal wealth. If an option introduces facts that have zero textual support, eliminate it immediately.

- Read the question first to determine whether you need a reason, a time, a location, or a person's identity.

- Locate logical connectors in the passage to see which clause functions as the cause and which functions as the result.

- Accept paraphrases whose meaning and contextual scope are supported. A broader word is not automatically an equivalent answer.

- Reject options that merely echo a word from a background sentence or invent unstated details related to the general setting.

Reading comprehension rewards checking sentence relationships over hunting for single words. Before locking in your choice, point to the exact clause in the passage that proves your answer.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does the correct option A say 'warm toward people' when the passage says 'warm toward colleagues'?**

Here 对人热情 summarizes an interpersonal quality in the workplace context. The passage supports it through his warmth toward colleagues. Do not extend the answer into a universal claim about how he treats every person outside that context.

**If the word for graduation appears right in the first sentence, why is option B wrong?**

The presence of a shared word does not mean an option answers the question. The first sentence only states what Xiaoming did after graduating from university to set the scene. It does not state that he just graduated, nor does it present graduation as the reason his coworkers like working with him.

**Is the reading sample from a past official exam paper?**

No. It is an App-authored public demonstration item designed to illustrate the R11 passage choice format and help learners practice identifying text evidence.
