# 幸亏/幸好……，不然/否则……: A Fortunate Fact and an Avoided Consequence

This lesson explains how to use 幸亏/幸好……，不然/否则…… to identify a fortunate fact and the adverse result it helped prevent. It covers the paired alternatives, sentence order, time reference and certainty, punctuation, and contrasts with straightforward cause-and-effect statements.

幸亏/幸好 favorable fact ， otherwise marker unfavorable result

Example sentence

幸好我们提前结束了徒步，不然就要被大雨困在山里了。

Xìnghǎo wǒmen tíqián jiéshù le túbù, bùrán jiù yào bèi dàyǔ kùn zài shān lǐ le.

Fortunately, we finished the hike early; otherwise, we would have been stranded in the mountains by heavy rain.

Finishing the hike early is the protective action. The second clause imagines being caught in heavy rain if that action had not been taken.

## Meaning: a good outcome that depended on a fortunate fact

The outline lists this construction under hypothetical complex sentences for levels 7–9 (source: hsk-7-9-g110). The pattern looks back at a favorable fact and presents an unfavorable outcome as what could have happened if that fact had been absent or ineffective. It therefore combines relief or gratitude with a counterfactual consequence. The second clause is a possibility or inference, not necessarily a claim that the adverse event was certain.

幸亏法务同事发现了那处歧义，否则公司可能要承担额外的履约成本。

Xìngkuī fǎwù tóngshì fāxiàn le nà chù qíyì, fǒuzé gōngsī kěnéng yào chéngdān éwài de lǚyuē chéngběn.

Luckily, a colleague in Legal spotted that ambiguity; otherwise, the company might have incurred additional costs in performing the contract.

幸亏 highlights the intervention; 可能 keeps the projected consequence qualified.

Use the construction when the speaker can identify something that went well, such as a timely check, a warning, a decision, or a safeguard, and connect it to a meaningful risk that was avoided. It suits reports, explanations, and conversations after a near miss. The speaker may sound relieved, appreciative, or simply analytical. The construction does not require an emotional exclamation, but the favorable fact should plausibly affect the adverse outcome.

## Formation and choosing the paired words

幸亏/幸好 favorable fact ， otherwise marker unfavorable result

幸亏 and 幸好 both introduce a favorable fact. 幸好 often conveys relief, while 幸亏 can highlight the person, action or circumstance that made the difference; these are tendencies, not strict oppositions. The fact need not be a completed past event: 幸好现在还有时间，不然我们就来不及修改了 refers to time still available now. The context determines the time of the favorable situation and the otherwise consequence.

不然 and 否则 introduce the alternative adverse result: “otherwise.” 不然 is common in everyday speech and writing. 否则 is often more formal or explicit, especially in careful explanations and written language. They can usually fill the same position when the relationship is clear. After either one, state the result that might have followed; do not leave the listener to infer an important consequence from a bare marker.

幸好我把会议地点又确认了一遍，不然我们就会赶到旧办公室去。

Xìnghǎo wǒ bǎ huìyì dìdiǎn yòu quèrèn le yí biàn, bùrán wǒmen jiù huì gǎn dào jiù bàngōngshì qù.

Fortunately, I confirmed the meeting location once more; otherwise, we would have gone to the old office.

不然 introduces the alternative result, with 会 marking a projected outcome.

## Order, reference, and degree of certainty

The usual order is the favorable fact first, followed by a comma and the alternative result. The first clause may be a complete event or a condition that made a later outcome possible. The second clause often contains 就, 会, 要, or a modal expression such as 可能 to show the projected consequence. These words are useful, not mandatory: choose one that reflects the relationship and degree of certainty you mean. Keep the subject and time reference clear across both clauses, especially when the subject changes.

Do not read the second clause as a guaranteed outcome. A definite-sounding result can be natural when the connection is strong, while 可能, 未必, or a similar expression can qualify an uncertain consequence. The speaker is presenting an alternative scenario; how strongly they believe it depends on the facts and wording.

幸亏系统保留了异地备份，否则故障后丢失的数据很难完整恢复。

Xìngkuī xìtǒng bǎoliú le yìdì bèifèn, fǒuzé gùzhàng hòu diūshī de shùjù hěn nán wánzhěng huīfù.

Thanks to the off-site backup, the data lost after the failure would otherwise have been difficult to restore completely.

否则 introduces a consequence that remains qualified by 很难, rather than claiming that recovery was impossible.

## Contrast: counterfactual consequence versus direct cause

Compare this construction with a direct causal explanation. A sentence of the form “The backup preserved the data, so recovery was possible” reports a causal link between events. The target pattern instead asks the reader to consider a different scenario: because the backup existed, data loss might otherwise have made recovery difficult. Use 幸亏/幸好……，不然/否则…… when the avoided alternative is central to your point. Use a direct causal linker when you only need to report why an actual result occurred.

- Check that the first clause names a real favorable fact, not just a neutral background detail.

- Check that the second clause names an unfavorable result that plausibly could have followed without that fact.

- Choose 不然 for a more conversational feel or 否则 for a more formal one when either works; do not treat this register difference as a grammar rule.

- If the second clause describes the actual result rather than an alternative possibility, consider a direct cause-and-effect construction instead.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I always swap 幸亏 and 幸好, or 不然 and 否则?**

They often share the same basic function in this pattern, but they can differ in emphasis and register. 幸亏 may foreground what made the difference, while 幸好 often foregrounds relief. 不然 is generally more conversational; 否则 often sounds more formal. Let the context guide the choice.

**Can the pattern appear in a question?**

Yes, when a speaker asks about a possible consequence or seeks confirmation, but the question must still make the favorable fact and alternative result intelligible. The pattern itself is not a question form; add a question word or intonation only when the conversation calls for a question.

**Does the second clause mean the adverse event definitely would have happened?**

No. It describes an alternative consequence and may express anything from a strongly expected result to a qualified possibility. Words such as 可能 help make uncertainty explicit.
