# HSK 7-9 Four-Character Pattern: 时A时B (shí A shí B) for Alternating States

The four-character pattern 时A时B describes alternating states or actions: sometimes A, sometimes B. Common pairs include 时好时坏 and 时断时续. The alternation need not be rapid, irregular, or undesirable.

时 First monosyllabic adjective or verb (A) 时 Contrasting monosyllabic adjective or verb (B)

Example sentence

山里的天气时好时坏，进山前一定要带齐雨具。

Shān lǐ de tiānqì shí hǎo shí huài, jìn shān qián yīdìng yào dài qí yǔjù.

The weather in the mountains is sometimes good and sometimes bad; you must bring all your rain gear before heading into the mountains.

Correct: 时好时坏 uses monosyllabic antonyms 好 and 坏 directly as the predicate describing fluctuating weather.

## Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

The supplied HSK outline lists 时A时B under four-character fixed phrases at levels 7–9. It describes alternation: 时好时坏 means sometimes good and sometimes bad, while 时断时续 means intermittent. The outline establishes this teaching scope; it does not identify the exam version used by every test centre.

时 First monosyllabic adjective or verb (A) 时 Contrasting monosyllabic adjective or verb (B)

The repeated 时 means at times or sometimes. Four-character expressions are concise and rhythmic, and occur in both speech and writing. The timing, regularity, and positive or negative effect of the alternation come from the context.

## Internal Rules and High-Frequency Pairings

Within the four-character frame, A and B are each one character. Familiar pairs often contrast in quality, degree, or action. Learn complete expressions such as 时好时坏 and 时隐时现; shared length alone does not make every invented pairing natural.

- Contrasting adjectives of quality or intensity: 时好时坏 (shí hǎo shí huài, fluctuating between good and bad), 时强时弱 (shí qiáng shí ruò, alternating between strong and weak), 时明时暗 (shí míng shí àn, flickering between bright and dim).

- Contrasting adjectives of speed, temperature, or height: 时快时慢 (shí kuài shí màn, varying in speed), 时冷时热 (shí lěng shí rè, alternating between cold and hot), 时高时低 (shí gāo shí dī, rising and falling).

- Contrasting monosyllabic verbs of continuity or appearance: 时断时续 (shí duàn shí xù, stopping and starting intermittently), 时隐时现 (shí yǐn shí xiàn, appearing and disappearing from view), 时起时伏 (shí qǐ shí fú, rising and subsiding).

隧道里的手机信号时强时弱，通话总是断断续续。

Suìdào lǐ de shǒujī xìnhào shí qiáng shí ruò, tōnghuà zǒngshì duànduànxùxù.

The mobile phone signal inside the tunnel fluctuates between strong and weak, so calls are always cutting in and out.

Correct: 时强时弱 pairs the single-character opposites 强 and 弱 to describe unstable signal strength.

Order depends on the expression and the sequence or focus being described. 时快时慢 is common, but 时慢时快 is also possible. There is no general rule that the positive or stronger state must come first.

## How 时A时B Functions in a Sentence

A phrase such as 时明时暗 can directly describe the subject as a predicate: 灯光时明时暗. 是 and 很 are not needed to complete this sentence. This is a statement about this construction, not a rule that every simple Chinese adjective always needs 很.

Subject or topic undergoing fluctuation 时 First monosyllabic adjective or verb (A) 时 Contrasting monosyllabic adjective or verb (B)

远处渔船上的灯光时明时暗，在海面上轻轻摇晃。

Yuǎnchù yúchuán shàng de dēngguāng shí míng shí àn, zài hǎimiàn shàng qīngqīng yáohuàng.

The lights on the distant fishing boats flicker between bright and dim, swaying gently on the surface of the sea.

Correct: 时明时暗 functions smoothly as the predicate of the first clause without needing 是 or 很.

In addition to standing as the main predicate, 时A时B frequently modifies a noun phrase with 的 (de), or follows a verb with 得 (de) as a state complement. When used before a noun, it characterizes a phenomenon defined by its intermittence, such as a flickering light, unstable applause, or broken melody.

窗外传来时断时续的琴声，让人静下心来。

Chuāngwài chuánlái shí duàn shí xù de qínshēng, ràng rén jìng xià xīn lái.

Intermittent instrumental music drifted in from outside the window, helping people settle their minds.

Correct: 时断时续 pairs contrasting monosyllabic verbs 断 and 续 and modifies 琴声 with 的.

## Four-Character Phrases and Expanded Wording

Adding material inside 时A时B produces a longer expression rather than the four-character phrase. Judge that longer expression by its meaning and naturalness in context. For the traffic description below, 时快时慢 is concise; 有时很快，有时很慢 is a clear expanded alternative.

前方车流的速度时很快时很慢，司机们都开得很小心。

Qiánfāng chēliú de sùdù shí hěn kuài shí hěn màn, sījīmen dōu kāi de hěn xiǎoxīn.

Traffic ahead sometimes moves fast and sometimes slowly, so all the drivers are driving very carefully.

Expanded comparison: 时很快时很慢 is understandable, but 时快时慢 is more compact in this description. Using more than four characters does not by itself make a Chinese sentence ungrammatical.

前方车流的速度时快时慢，司机们都开得很小心。

Qiánfāng chēliú de sùdù shí kuài shí màn, sījīmen dōu kāi de hěn xiǎoxīn.

The speed of the traffic ahead fluctuates between fast and slow, so the drivers are all driving very carefully.

Compact alternative: 时快时慢 describes alternating speeds with a familiar four-character phrase.

Use 时快时慢 when a compact description is enough. If degree matters, express it in fuller clauses, for example 有时快得让人跟不上，有时又很慢. The choice concerns how much detail to convey, not an automatic grammar violation whenever 很 appears.

## Contrast: 时A时B Versus 时而...时而...

For longer descriptions, 时而…时而… and 有时…有时… are useful options. They can connect phrases such as 低头沉思 and 抬头远望. The compact 时A时B frame and these fuller patterns all express alternation; the four-character frame is only one available form.

他站在窗前，时而低头沉思，时而抬头远望。

Tā zhàn zài chuāng qián, shí'ér dītóu chénsī, shí'ér táitóu yuǎnwàng.

He stood in front of the window, at times lowering his head in deep thought, and at times raising his head to gaze into the distance.

时而…时而… clearly introduces the two longer actions. 有时…有时… is another natural option; the longer wording is not restricted to a single conjunction.

Choose a familiar four-character expression for a concise description. Choose fuller parallel clauses when you need to name different actions or add detail. Neither form requires the changes to be irregular or confined to a short period.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I put any two opposite single-character words into 时A时B?**

No. Familiar contrasting pairs such as 时快时慢 and 时隐时现 are useful models, but not every invented pair sounds natural. The context must make alternating occurrences or states interpretable. The expression itself does not set a maximum time span.

**Do I need to put 很 before 时A时B when it acts as a predicate?**

No: 手机信号时强时弱 is a complete sentence without 很. Inserting 很 into that phrase gives a different, expanded wording; a clearer option when degree matters is 有时很强，有时很弱. Do not add 很 mechanically to every descriptive predicate.
