# HSK 7-9 Discourse Marker 这不: Pragmatic Meaning, Usage, and Contrasts

这不 is a conversational discourse marker used to draw attention to a situation relevant to the discussion, often as supporting evidence or an explanation. The situation may be visible, recently reported, recalled in a story or a known upcoming arrangement; it need not be happening in front of both people.

prior statement or context ，这不， clause presenting a relevant situation, evidence or explanation

Example sentence

早上看天色就不太好，这不，还没到中午就下起瓢泼大雨来了。

zǎoshang kàn tiānsè jiù bú tài hǎo , zhè bù , hái méi dào zhōngwǔ jiù xià qǐ piáopō dàyǔ lái le .

The sky didn't look too good this morning; see, it wasn't even noon yet and it started pouring rain.

Here 这不 introduces an actual event (the downpour) that confirms the speaker's earlier observation.

## What Is the Discourse Marker 这不?

In the HSK 7-9 syllabus, 这不 is classified under fixed phrases as a discourse marker.

In the discourse-marker use, 这不 roughly means “see”, “well, here is the situation” or “as you can see”. It does not negate the following clause. A pause or comma often helps signal this use, but interpret the context rather than treating punctuation alone as a grammatical test.

The speaker brings a situation into focus to support a point, explain a recent action, or remind the listener of something relevant. This presents the speaker’s evidence or account; it does not make the claim objectively undeniable.

## Sentence Position and Prosody

Because 这不 is a fixed discourse marker rather than a productive syntactic verb or modifier, it stands outside the grammatical core of the clause that follows it. In transcripts and informal writing, it is almost always set off by a comma. In speech, it is pronounced as a compact unit with a brief intonation break after it, alerting the listener that concrete evidence or an immediate explanation is about to follow.

When speakers use 这不 to point out something visibly obvious in the physical environment, the clause that follows frequently ends with modal particles such as 嘛 or 吗, reinforcing the tone of 'Isn't it right here?' or 'As you can plainly see!'

这不， clause presenting a relevant situation, evidence or explanation （嘛 / 吗）？

## Three Natural Contexts and Functions

Rather than memorizing abstract rules, advanced learners should associate 这不 with three highly specific conversational moves:

- Presenting support for a point: after a general observation or ongoing effort, use 这不 to introduce an event the speaker offers as an illustration or supporting evidence.

- Giving a current situation as an explanation: When greeting someone, apologizing for a delay, or justifying a sudden visit, you use 这不 to mean 'Well, here is what happened recently that led to me doing this right now.'

- Pointing out an obvious presence to reassure or remind: When someone is worried, looking for an object, or doubting a fact, you use 这不 to direct their eyes to the solution right in front of them.

Old Zhang, long time no see! Well, the thing is, I was away on a business trip for a while and only just got back to Beijing yesterday, so I hurried over to see you today.

Used at the start of an explanation to connect recent background events to why the speaker is showing up right now.

你先别急着翻包，这不，车钥匙就搁在玄关的鞋柜上嘛！

Don't rummage through your bag in a panic; look, aren't the car keys sitting right there on the shoe cabinet in the entryway!

Co-occurs with the final particle 嘛 to point out something visibly present right in front of the listener.

The community has been improving its services for older people; look, the newly built senior canteen officially opened this week.

Common in feature reporting or interviews: cites a concrete new achievement as vivid proof of a broader ongoing effort.

## Register and Useful Contrasts

这不 is conversational and fits dialogue, interviews and lively narrative commentary. In an impersonal academic abstract or an official explanation, a direct statement generally fits better. Quotations or linguistic analysis can still include the phrase, and a narrative can recreate a scene rather than point at something literally present now.

First, distinguish the discourse marker 这不 from the literal syntactic combination of demonstrative pronoun 这 ('this') plus negation adverb 不 ('not'). In the literal combination, there is no pause after 不, and 不 directly negates the following verb or adjective.

这不合乎行业规范，我们必须重新审核。

zhè bù héhū hángyè guīfàn , wǒmen bìxū chóngxīn shěnhé .

This does not conform to industry standards; we must review it again.

Contrast example: here 这 ('this') is the subject and 不 ('not') negates the verb 合乎 ('conform to'). It is not a discourse marker.

这样一来 introduces a consequence of a preceding situation. 这不 instead draws attention to a relevant situation or explanation. That explanation may mention the future: 这不，明天就要考试了，我得早点休息 introduces an already-known upcoming exam. This differs from using 这不 as a general equivalent of “therefore”.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does the discourse marker 这不 carry a negative meaning because it contains 不?**

The marker itself does not negate what follows. The following clause may still be negative: 这不，我还没来得及吃饭呢 introduces the explanation that the speaker has not yet had time to eat. Distinguish the marker’s function from the polarity of the predicate.

**Can I use 这不 to introduce a pure prediction about the distant future?**

It normally introduces something relevant to the current account, rather than a bare distant prediction. But a future arrangement can supply that relevance: 这不，明天就要考试了，我得早点休息. Check its explanatory or attention-directing function, not just whether a date lies in the future.

**Is 这不 acceptable in formal academic essays?**

It should be avoided in formal academic or official writing. Because it simulates a speaker pointing at a live situation for the listener ('See here...'), it carries a distinctly conversational and interactive tone.
