# Using 无论……与否，都…… for Unconditional Conditions

This pattern presents alternatives or uncertainty in the first clause and states that the same outcome holds across them. Learn how to form it, when 与否 fits, and how to distinguish it from a simple yes-or-no question.

无论 person agree or consent 与否， we 都按原计划进行。

Example sentence

无论他同意与否，我们都按原计划进行。

Wúlùn tā tóngyì yǔfǒu, wǒmen dōu àn yuán jìhuà jìnxíng.

Whether or not he agrees, we will proceed according to the original plan.

Correct statement: agreement does not change the plan.

## Meaning: the result holds either way

无论……与否，都…… frames a condition as unresolved or variable, then says that the same result applies in either case. In English, it often means “whether or not …, …” or “regardless of whether …, …”. The first clause does not ask the listener to choose an answer. It names the possible states; the second clause states what remains true across them.

无论天气晴朗与否，比赛都按时开始。

Wúlùn tiānqì qínglǎng yǔfǒu, bǐsài dōu ànshí kāishǐ.

Whether or not the weather is clear, the match will start on time.

Correct statement: the weather does not change the scheduled start.

无论评审结果如何，团队都会公开说明理由。

Wúlùn píngshěn jiéguǒ rúhé, tuánduì dōu huì gōngkāi shuōmíng lǐyóu.

Whatever the review outcome, the team will publicly explain its reasons.

Related contrast: 无论……如何 ranges over different review outcomes. It is not the exact 与否 frame, which contrasts a proposition with its negation.

## Form the two clauses

Build the target as 无论 + proposition + 与否，+ subject + 都 + predicate. Use a proposition such as 他同意, 天气晴朗, or 申请人提交补充材料; 与否 then adds “or not.” Do not attach 与否 to an arbitrary noun with no interpretable yes/no proposition. A related alternative is 无论他是否同意，我们都……: 是否 precedes the predicate, whereas 与否 follows it. Normally choose one way to express “whether or not,” rather than stacking both. 如何 and A还是B form other 无论 constructions, shown here only for contrast.

无论申请人提交补充材料与否，委员会都会按同一标准审核。

Wúlùn shēnqǐngrén tíjiāo bǔchōng cáiliào yǔfǒu, wěiyuánhuì dōu huì àn tóng yī biāozhǔn shěnhé.

Whether or not an applicant submits supplementary materials, the committee will review the application according to the same standard.

Correct statement: submission status does not change the stated review standard.

无论你选择线上还是线下参加，讨论都会在九点开始。

Wúlùn nǐ xuǎnzé xiànshàng háishi xiànxià cānjiā, tǎolùn dōu huì zài jiǔ diǎn kāishǐ.

Whether you choose to attend online or in person, the discussion will start at nine.

Related contrast: 无论……还是…… lists two attendance options explicitly. The target 与否 frame instead means whether a proposition is true or not.

Keep 都 with the result clause. It means that the result applies across the alternatives; it does not mean “all” people or objects by itself.

## When to use it

Use the pattern when the speaker wants to make a decision, policy, prediction, or general statement robust to an uncertain condition. The review example, for instance, commits the team to explaining its reasons whatever the outcome. This is stronger than merely reporting that two possibilities exist: the main clause explicitly applies to either one. The pattern suits formal discussion as well as ordinary conversation, though the topic and wording determine the tone.

- The first clause identifies the uncertainty or alternatives.

- The second clause gives one outcome that covers them.

- A statement can describe a present fact, a plan, or a future result; 都 does not itself mark tense.

## Useful contrasts and common traps

他是否同意？ asks whether he agrees. 无论他同意与否，我们都按原计划进行 instead states that the plan applies either way. 是否 and 与否 can occur in larger statements as embedded alternatives; neither alone makes the whole sentence a question or an unconditional statement. Read the full relationship between the clauses.

This pattern is conditional in the broad sense that it ranges over possible states, but its point is that the result does not change across those states. A sentence with “although” instead acknowledges a circumstance and then presents a contrasting fact. That is a different relation. Likewise, a hypothetical “if” construction considers a possible condition and its consequence; it does not necessarily claim that the consequence holds whether the condition occurs or not.

- Use 无论……与否，都…… to emphasize that the same result applies either way.

- Use 是否 in a direct question when genuinely asking for a yes-or-no answer.

- Use a concession when the main point contrasts with an acknowledged circumstance.

## A quick way to check your sentence

Read the first clause as two alternatives: the event happens, or it does not; the person agrees, or does not; one option is chosen, or another. Then ask whether the main clause states the same outcome for both. If it does, 无论……与否，都…… is a good fit. If the speaker wants an answer, or the result changes with the condition, choose a question or a different conditional form.

## Frequently asked questions

**Should I use 是否 and 与否 together?**

Normally choose one: 无论他是否同意，…… or 无论他同意与否，…… . 是否 comes before the predicate, 与否 after it. Repeating both to mean the same “whether or not” is usually unnecessary. The target of this lesson is the second frame.

**Can 都 be omitted?**

For the pattern taught here, 都 is the main-clause marker that makes the across-the-alternatives meaning clear. Omitting it may produce a different construction or weaken that reading, so include it when using this pattern.

**Is a sentence with 是否 necessarily a question?**

No. 是否 can introduce an indirect whether-clause inside a statement. In this pattern, 无论 and the main clause with 都 show that the sentence asserts an outcome that holds either way.
