# HSK 7-9 Negative Adverbs: 不见得, 绝不, 无从, 无须, 无可, and 勿

At advanced proficiency levels, negation in Chinese moves beyond simple factual denial into nuanced expressions of doubt, resolve, lack of means, and formal prohibition. This guide explains the six negative adverbs listed in the HSK 7-9 syllabus outline: 不见得, 绝不, 无从, 无须, 无可, and 勿.

Subject 不见得 Predicate / Clause

Example sentence

最贵的方案不见得是最适合我们的。

Zuì guì de fāng'àn bùjiànde shì zuì shìhé wǒmen de.

The most expensive plan is not necessarily the most suitable one for us.

不见得 challenges the assumption that a higher price guarantees a better fit; it does not assert that the most expensive option is necessarily unsuitable.

## Overview of Advanced Negative Adverbs

In the HSK 7-9 grammar outline, the category of negative adverbs (否定副词) groups together six high-utility items: 不见得, 绝不, 无从, 无须, 无可, and 勿. While lower-level learners rely heavily on 不 and 没 to negate actions or states, advanced users must select negative adverbs that match the exact degree of certainty, the logical source of the negation, and the formality of the register.

Syllabus Note: These six adverbs are grouped under Level 7-9 in the 2025-11 HSK examination syllabus outline. Because test centers may administer different exam versions during transition periods, treat this grouping as a reference for advanced reading and writing proficiency rather than a guarantee of what will appear on a specific booked test.

## Certainty and Stance: 不见得 vs. 绝不

不见得 means “not necessarily” and can convey doubt about a claim. It appears in conversation and analytical writing before a predicate or clause, or alone as a reply. It leaves room for an alternative rather than asserting that the opposite is certainly true. Whether the challenge sounds gentle depends on wording and tone.

Subject 不见得 Predicate / Clause

最贵的方案不见得是最适合我们的。

Zuì guì de fāng'àn bùjiànde shì zuì shìhé wǒmen de.

The most expensive plan is not necessarily the most suitable one for us.

不见得 challenges the assumption that a higher price guarantees a better fit; it does not assert that the most expensive option is necessarily unsuitable.

绝不 gives emphatic negation. It commonly expresses firm refusal or resolve, as in 绝不妥协, and can emphasize a judgment, as in 这绝不是事实. To deny that a particular action happened, 绝没有 is often appropriate. This does not ban 绝不 from every sentence about the past: 这绝不是我当时的本意 denies an interpretation of a past intention. Select 不 or 没有 according to what is being negated.

Subject 绝不 Verb Phrase

面对这种无理的要求，我们绝不妥协。

Miànduì zhè zhǒng wúlǐ de yāoqiú, wǒmen juébù tuǒxié.

Faced with such an unreasonable demand, we will absolutely not compromise.

Shows 绝不 expressing firm determination before a volitional verb.

## Absence of Means and Possibility: 无从 and 无可

无从 indicates that there is no available way, basis or starting point for an action. Common combinations include 无从下手, 无从考证 and 无从得知. It often sounds formal, but a following verb phrase may contain an object: 无从了解事情的经过 means there is no way to find out how the matter unfolded. Learn the whole phrase instead of imposing a ban on objects.

无从 verb phrase describing the unavailable action

由于缺乏原始记录，这件事的起因已经无从考证。

Yóuyú quēfá yuánshǐ jìlù, zhè jiàn shì de qǐyīn yǐjīng wúcóng kǎozhèng.

Due to the lack of original records, the cause of this matter can no longer be verified.

Shows 无从 paired with the formal disyllabic verb 考证 when the basis for action is missing.

无可 occurs in established combinations such as 无可奈何, 无可厚非, 无可挑剔 and 无可替代. Their meanings differ: 无可厚非 means there is no strong ground for blame, while 无可奈何 means being unable to do anything about a situation. Do not translate every combination as “incapable of being,” or build a new phrase by replacing 不能 mechanically.

无可 Selected Verb / Idiom Stem

她的专业能力在这个行业里是无可替代的。

Tā de zhuānyè nénglì zài zhège hángyè lǐ shì wúkě tìdài de.

Her professional competence is irreplaceable in this industry.

Shows 无可 combining with 替代 in a formal evaluative statement.

## Formal Lack of Necessity and Prohibition: 无须 and 勿

无须 means that an action is unnecessary, rather than impossible or prohibited. It is common in formal instructions and notices; 不用 or 不必 is often simpler in conversation. 无须 can also reassure someone, as in 你无须担心. It does not always report an official requirement. 无需 is another common form in this use.

无须 Verb Phrase

Shows 无须 used in an administrative context to state the absence of a requirement.

勿 means “do not” in a prohibition or warning. It is concise and typical of signs, written instructions, correspondence and expressions such as 勿忘. 请勿 is a familiar notice form, but 请 is not required: 勿触摸 is already a prohibition. In everyday conversation, 别 or 不要 is usually the natural default; 勿 can give an intentionally literary or sign-like tone.

## Meaning and Register: Choose the Right Negation

First identify the intended negation: lack of certainty, firm denial, lack of a way, lack of necessity, or prohibition. Then choose a tone that fits the situation. A formal expression in a daily-life example is not automatically ungrammatical. The two wallet sentences below illustrate a difference in naturalness and register, not a rule forbidding a verb from taking an object after 无从.

- 不见得 vs. 不一定: both can mean “not necessarily.” 不见得 often foregrounds doubt, but the force depends on the whole utterance; 不一定 is not invariably neutral.

- 无从 vs. 无法 / 没法: 无从 highlights a missing way or basis. 无法 and 没法 express inability more generally; 没法 is especially natural in casual speech. The choice is not determined solely by whether the action is physical or abstract.

- 无须 vs. 不用: both can deny necessity. 无须 is more formal, but is possible in speech; 不用 is often the simpler conversational choice. Neither by itself means “forbidden.”

- 勿 vs. 别: use 别 or 不要 for an ordinary spoken request. 勿 is suited to a concise written warning or an intentionally literary expression. This is register guidance, not an absolute conversational ban.

我今天忘带钱包了，无从买这件衣服。

Wǒ jīntiān wàng dài qiánbāo le, wúcóng mǎi zhè jiàn yīfu.

I forgot my wallet today, so I have no way to buy this item of clothing.

Understandable, but 无从 gives this ordinary shopping remark a rather formal tone. 没法 is a more natural casual choice in the next example. The verb and object are not inherently forbidden after 无从.

我今天忘带钱包了，没法买这件衣服。

Wǒ jīntiān wàng dài qiánbāo le, méifǎ mǎi zhè jiàn yīfu.

I forgot my wallet today, so I have no way to buy this piece of clothing.

A conversational alternative to the preceding sentence, preserving the forgotten wallet and intended inability to buy the clothing. 没法 fits the everyday tone.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the difference between 绝不 and 决不?**

In modern Chinese usage, both are pronounced juébù and often overlap. However, 绝不 emphasizes 'absolutely without exception' (as listed in this HSK 7-9 syllabus point), whereas 决不 specifically highlights subjective determination ('resolutely not'). In most contexts involving refusal or resolve, 绝不 is widely accepted.

**Can I put 无可 before any verb to mean 'cannot'?**

No. 无可 is best learned through established combinations, whose meanings are not all identical: 无可替代 is “irreplaceable,” 无可奈何 is being unable to do anything about a situation, and 无可厚非 allows that something is not seriously blameworthy. It is not a general replacement for 不能, and syllable count alone does not decide whether a combination works.

**Can 不见得 be used alone as a short reply?**

Yes. 不见得 or 不见得吧 can be a short reply meaning “not necessarily” or “I doubt it.” The particle 吧 may make it less categorical, but politeness still depends on delivery and context.
