# HSK 6 Quasi-Prefixes (类前缀): 超—, 多—, 反—, 无—, 亚—, 准—

Learn six word-forming elements in the HSK 6 outline: 超—, 多—, 反—, 无—, 亚— and 准—. Their meanings help you interpret established words, but the whole word and context determine its grammar and sense. These characters can also have other uses outside the quasi-prefix pattern.

超 root word / stem

Example sentence

这种超薄手机在市场上非常受欢迎。

Zhè zhǒng chāobáo shǒujī zài shìchǎng shàng fēicháng shòu huānyíng.

This kind of ultra-thin mobile phone is very popular in the market.

超— attaches to the single-syllable adjective 薄 (thin) to create a classifying modifier (超薄, ultra-thin).

## What Are Quasi-Prefixes (类前缀)?

The HSK 6 outline groups these six elements as 类前缀, often translated as quasi-prefixes or prefixoids. In this use they occur at the beginning of a word or compact expression and retain recognizable meanings. The label helps describe a word-formation pattern; it does not mean that each character has only one grammatical role or that all other prefixes have lost their meaning.

Use the elements as clues when reading unfamiliar words, then check the whole expression. The resulting word can name an entity, classify a noun or serve another function in a sentence. Do not assume that every item formed with these elements is a non-predicate adjective, or that the six formulas license every possible combination.

## Degree and Multiplicity: 超— and 多—

The quasi-prefix 超— (chāo) means 'super-', 'ultra-', 'extra-', or 'beyond'. It attaches to nouns, adjectives, or verb-object roots to indicate that something exceeds normal standards, limits, or scales. In modern Mandarin, it appears both in formal technical terms (such as ultrasonic or supernatural) and in everyday product descriptions.

超 root word / stem

这种超薄手机在市场上非常受欢迎。

Zhè zhǒng chāobáo shǒujī zài shìchǎng shàng fēicháng shòu huānyíng.

This kind of ultra-thin mobile phone is very popular in the market.

超— attaches to the single-syllable adjective 薄 (thin) to create a classifying modifier (超薄, ultra-thin).

多— (duō) contributes “multi-” or “more than one” in expressions such as 多功能, 多媒体, 多元 and 多角度. The stems vary in length and meaning. Learn the compound rather than requiring every stem to be a two-syllable abstract noun. Contrast 多功能会议室 with a phrase such as 很多会议室, which counts many rooms.

多 root word / stem

我们需要一个多功能的会议室来举办这次活动。

Wǒmen xūyào yī gè duōgōngnéng de huìyìshì lái jǔbàn zhè cì huódòng.

We need a multi-functional conference room to hold this event.

多— combines with the noun 功能 (function) to describe something possessing multiple functions.

## Opposition and Absence: 反— and 无—

The quasi-prefix 反— (fǎn) means 'anti-' or 'counter-'. It attaches to nouns, verbs, or adjectives to express opposition, resistance, or reversal. You will frequently encounter it in legal, political, and scientific contexts, such as 反垄断 (anti-monopoly), 反作用 (counter-reaction), or 反传统 (anti-traditional).

反 root word / stem

政府采取了一系列反腐败措施。

Zhèngfǔ cǎiqǔ le yī xìliè fǎnfǔbài cuòshī.

The government has adopted a series of anti-corruption measures.

反— attaches to 腐败 (corruption) to form an attributive modifier meaning 'anti-corruption'.

The quasi-prefix 无— (wú) means '-less', 'non-', or 'free of'. Originating from Classical Chinese, it acts as a productive prefix in modern terminology to indicate the absence of a substance, condition, or requirement. Typical compounds include 无线 (wireless), 无糖 (sugar-free), and 无条件 (unconditional).

无 root word / stem

消费者对无污染的农产品的需求越来越大。

Xiāofèizhě duì wúwūrǎn de nóngchǎnpǐn de xūqiú yuèláiyuè dà.

Consumer demand for pollution-free agricultural products is growing larger and larger.

无— combines with 污染 (pollution) to form the classification 'pollution-free'.

## Rank and Threshold: 亚— and 准—

亚— (yà) can contribute a subcategory, a position below another category or a less-than-full standard, depending on the whole term. Compare 亚热带, 亚文化 and 亚健康. 亚文化 is a subculture, not a declaration that its people or values are inferior. Do not translate every 亚— term as “second-best” or assume an exact one-level ranking.

亚 root word / stem

长期熬夜让很多年轻人处于亚健康状态。

Chángqī áoyè ràng hěn duō niánqīngrén chǔyú yàjiànkāng zhuàngtài.

Long-term late nights leave many young people in less-than-ideal health.

亚健康 illustrates a less-than-full standard in this term. Compare 亚文化, where 亚 instead contributes “sub-” in the sense of a subgroup. The whole term determines the sense.

准— (zhǔn) contributes “quasi-” or “prospective,” depending on the term. 准军事 describes something resembling or organized along military lines; 准新娘 and 准大学生 refer to an expected upcoming role. These senses do not all mean that the person or thing is waiting for an official certificate.

准 root word / stem

她正在为即将出生的孩子准备用品，是一位幸福的准妈妈。

Tā zhèngzài wèi jíjiāng chūshēng de háizi zhǔnbèi yòngpǐn, shì yī wèi xìngfú de zhǔnmāma.

She is preparing supplies for her soon-to-be-born child; she is a happy mother-to-be.

准妈妈 means a mother-to-be. 准 marks the expected role here; it does not require an official appointment or certification.

## Useful Contrasts and Common Mistakes

- 亚— and 准—: learn the whole term rather than treating the two as interchangeable. 亚文化 names a subculture; 准妈妈 names a mother-to-be. The latter does not mean a “lower-ranked mother,” and 亚妈妈 is not the standard expression for that intended role.

- 无— marks absence in terms such as 无烟; 反— marks opposition in 反吸烟. Absence and opposition are different meanings. Whether either expression sounds neutral, approving or critical depends on the sentence and its use.

- 超— as prefix vs. colloquial adverb: In HSK 6 word formation, 超— binds tightly to a root to classify a type or specification (超音速, supersonic; 超自然, supernatural). In casual speech, 超 is also used as a loose adverb of degree before emotional or evaluative adjectives (like saying something is 'super good-looking'), which belongs to informal register rather than formal compound formation.

Distinguish word formation from the other uses of 无. In everyday conversation, 我今天没有时间 is the ordinary way to say that you have no time today. Formal 无此必要 and literary 无有 show that 无 is not confined to prefixes or four-character idioms. The following pair illustrates a register choice, not a ban on every occurrence of 无有.

我今天无有时间去参加聚会。

Wǒ jīntiān wú yǒu shíjiān qù cānjiā jùhuì.

I do not have time to attend the party today.

无有 is literary or archaizing rather than the neutral everyday choice. For an ordinary conversation about today’s plans, use 没有 as in the next example. This is a register comparison.

我今天没有时间去参加聚会。

Wǒ jīntiān méiyǒu shíjiān qù cānjiā jùhuì.

I do not have time to attend the party today.

没有 is the neutral conversational choice here. The person, lack of time and intended attendance stay the same as in the preceding example.

Syllabus Note: This grammar point is listed at Level 6 in the 2025-11 HSK outline (with a 2026-07 implementation label). Because exam administration updates vary by test center and booking date, treat this level label as a reference for advanced study scope rather than a guarantee of the exact test version you will sit.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do words formed with these quasi-prefixes need 的 when modifying a noun?**

Not always. Compare 超薄手机, 多功能会议室 and 反腐败措施 with 多功能的会议室. The choice depends on the whole expression and how the modifier is presented. 多功能 and 无污染 can occur with or without 的 in suitable noun phrases; their three-character length does not require 的. 超声波 and 准妈妈 are whole nouns, not examples proving a rule about an omitted 的 before another head noun.

**Can I attach these six quasi-prefixes to any Chinese word I want?**

No. While they are productive in modern Chinese—especially in media, science, and commerce—they prefer specific root types (mostly nouns, verbal nouns, or single-syllable adjectives for 超—) and established collocations. You should learn high-frequency compounds first rather than inventing arbitrary combinations in formal writing.
