# HSK 6 Verbal Measure Word: 番 (fān)

番 (fān) can present an action as a round or episode, often in expressions such as 商量一番 and 思考一番. Learn its pairings and tone without treating it as a measurement of how long, difficult or successful an action must be.

verb that naturally pairs with 番 (了) Numeral (一 / 几) 番

Example sentence

大家仔细商量了一番，终于定下了明年的计划。

Dàjiā zǐxì shāngliang le yī fān, zhōngyú dìngxià le míngnián de jìhuà.

Everyone discussed it carefully and finally settled on next year's plan.

一番 groups the discussion as an episode; 仔细 supplies “carefully,” and 终于 introduces the eventual result.

A common mistake

× 他走进办公室，在椅子上坐下了一番。

Tā zǒujìn bàngōngshì, zài yǐzi shàng zuòxià le yī fān.

Intended: He walked into the office and sat down on the chair for a bit.

For the intended meaning “sit for a short while,” replace 坐下了一番 with 坐了一会儿. This fixes the expression of duration while keeping the same person, office, chair and action.

Corrected example: 他走进办公室，在椅子上坐了一会儿。

## Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

The HSK 6 outline lists 番 (fān) as a verbal measure word. In 商量一番 or 思考一番, it presents the action as a round or episode. Context can suggest time and effort, but 番 alone does not establish a long duration, difficulty, deliberate exertion or a successful result. The level label follows the outline; it does not identify the version offered by every test centre.

Useful pairings include 商量一番, 调查一番, 思考一番 and 欣赏一番. 一番 and 几番 are good starting patterns. They are not an exhaustive numeral list: expressions such as 三番五次 contain 三番. For a straightforward count of visits or attempts, 次 is generally more neutral.

## Pattern 1: Post-Verbal Complement

After a compatible verb, 一番 or 几番 presents a round or rounds of activity. 了 can mark a completed episode, as in 商量了一番. It is not compulsory: 先商量一番再决定 describes a proposed sequence. Choose the English or Thai wording from the whole sentence rather than automatically translating 一番 as a long time.

大家仔细商量了一番，终于定下了明年的计划。

Dàjiā zǐxì shāngliang le yī fān, zhōngyú dìngxià le míngnián de jìhuà.

一番 groups the discussion as an episode; 仔细 supplies “carefully,” and 终于 introduces the eventual result.

记者在当地调查了几番，才弄清楚事情的真相。

Jìzhě zài dāngdì diàochá le jǐ fān, cái nòng qīngchu shìqing de zhēnxiàng.

The reporter investigated several times locally before finally getting to the bottom of the matter.

几番 indicates multiple rounds of sustained investigative effort.

## Pattern 2: Pre-Nominal Action Modifier

一番 and 几番 can also occur before an action expression or noun, as in 经过一番争论 and 费了一番功夫. Learn these pairings as whole phrases. The classifier groups an episode or an amount of effort; any resulting agreement or completed repair must be supplied by the sentence, not inferred from 番 alone.

Introductory Verb (经过 / 费) (了) Numeral (一 / 几) 番 Action or Effort Noun

经过一番激烈的争论，双方最终达成了协议。

Jīngguò yī fān jīliè de zhēnglùn, shuāngfāng zuìzhōng dáchéng le xiéyì.

After a round of intense debate, the two sides finally reached an agreement.

一番 modifies the nominalized action verb 争论 following 经过.

为了修好这台旧机器，他着实费了一番功夫。

Wèile xiūhǎo zhè tái jiù jīqì, tā zhuóshí fèi le yī fān gōngfu.

In order to repair this old machine, he really expended a great deal of effort.

费了一番功夫 expresses expenditure of effort. 为了修好 states the purpose of that effort; the sentence does not itself confirm that the repair succeeded.

## Useful Contrasts: 番 vs. 次 and 顿

Advanced learners often wonder when to choose 番 over more common verbal measure words. The choice depends on the duration, effort, and tone of the action:

- 次 (cì) is a general choice for counting occurrences, such as 三次调查. It does not itself specify length or difficulty. The verb and context still shape the meaning; no classifier is a substitute for checking the whole phrase.

- 番 (fān) emphasizes an extended round of activity or effort. For straightforward totals such as five visits or ten attempts, 次 is usually the neutral choice; 番 often gives a more expressive or literary tone.

- 顿 (dùn) occurs in pairings such as 吃一顿饭, 骂一顿 and 哭一顿. It groups a meal or a bout of activity; it does not require a short, violent burst. 番 and 顿 overlap with some verbs, but their established pairings and expressive effects differ.

## Selection Limits and Learner Errors

Classifier choice is a matter of meaning and established pairings. In the next sentence, the intended meaning is simply sitting on a chair for a short time. 坐下了一番 is an awkward way to express that; 坐了一会儿 gives the intended duration. Do not classify every posture verb as instantaneous: 站, for example, can describe standing for a long time.

他走进办公室，在椅子上坐了一会儿。

Tā zǒujìn bàngōngshì, zài yǐzi shang zuòle yīhuìr.

He walked into the office and sat on the chair for a short while.

一会儿 supplies a short duration. For a separate example with 番, compare 商量了一番 earlier in the lesson.

Before choosing 番, check a familiar verb–classifier pairing and decide whether you mean a round of activity, an exact count or a length of time. Compare 商量一番, 商量三次 and 商量了一会儿. These can describe related events, but foreground different aspects. 一下, 一次 and 一会儿 are not interchangeable repairs for every verb.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I use exact numbers like 三 (three) or 五 (five) before 番?**

一番 and 几番 are useful patterns, but not an exhaustive grammatical limit. 三番 occurs in 三番五次, for example. For an ordinary exact total such as three investigations, 三次调查 is the neutral starting point; a literary expression with 番 can have a different tone or grouping.

**Does 番 only modify verbs?**

While this syllabus entry focuses on 番 as a verbal measure word for effortful actions, you will also see 一番 before abstract nouns related to speech, thought, or appearance—such as 一番话 (a speech or remarks), 一番心意 (a kind intention), or 另一番景象 (another kind of scene). These are closely related extensions of its core meaning.
