# HSK 6 Alternative Compound Sentences: 要么……，要么……

The correlative pattern 要么……，要么…… connects two or more clauses in an alternative compound sentence to express mutually exclusive possibilities, decisive ultimatums, logical deductions, or alternating habits.

Shared Subject 要么 Predicate / Action A ，要么 Predicate / Action B

Example sentence

面对日益严峻的市场竞争，这家传统企业要么加快数字化转型，要么被新兴对手彻底淘汰。

Miànduì rìyì yánjùn de shìchǎng jìngzhēng, zhè jiā chuántǒng qǐyè yàome jiākuài shùzìhuà zhuǎnxíng, yàome bèi xīnxīng duìshǒu chèdǐ táotài.

Facing increasingly severe market competition, this traditional enterprise must either accelerate its digital transformation or be completely eliminated by emerging rivals.

Correct: Shared subject placed before the first 要么, expressing a stark strategic dilemma.

A common mistake

× 在这次国际学术会议上，你打算要么用中文做报告，要么用英文发言呢？

Zài zhè cì guójì xuéshù huìyì shàng, nǐ dǎsuàn yàome yòng Zhōngwén zuò bàogào, yàome yòng Yīngwén fāyán ne?

At this international academic conference, do you plan to either give a report in Chinese or speak in English?

Unsuitable as a neutral direct question asking the listener to choose a presentation language. Use 还是, as in the following sentence. 要么 can still occur inside a quoted choice or a question about an entire proposal; the restriction here concerns the intended alternative question.

Corrected example: 在这次国际学术会议上，你打算用中文做报告，还是用英文发言呢？

## Core Function and Syllabus Scope

The HSK 6 outline lists 要么……，要么…… under alternative compound sentences (选择复句). It links options that the speaker presents for selection or as alternative explanations. The pattern often suggests choosing one within that frame; grammar alone does not prove that the options exhaust every real-world possibility.

Unlike basic vocabulary used to list casual options, 要么……，要么…… carries a strong sense of mutual exclusivity. In English, it corresponds closely to 'either... or...'. When a speaker uses this pattern, they frame the situation as a binary or strictly limited reality: there is no middle ground, and failing to choose one option automatically forces the other.

## Sentence Formation and Subject Placement

As a clause-level connector, 要么 precedes the predicate or the entire clause that represents each alternative. Accurate word order depends on whether the two clauses share the same subject or involve different agents.

Shared Subject 要么 Predicate / Action A ，要么 Predicate / Action B

When both alternatives apply to the same person, organization, or topic, that shared subject is normally placed once at the beginning of the sentence, before the first 要么. Each 要么 is then followed directly by a verb phrase or adjective phrase.

Miànduì rìyì yánjùn de shìchǎng jìngzhēng, zhè jiā chuántǒng qǐyè yàome jiākuài shùzìhuà zhuǎnxíng, yàome bèi xīnxīng duìshǒu chèdǐ táotài.

Correct: Shared subject placed before the first 要么, expressing a stark strategic dilemma.

要么 Subject A Predicate A ，要么 Subject B Predicate B

When the alternatives involve different actors—such as dividing responsibilities between two people—each 要么 stands at the very front of its clause, immediately before its respective subject.

Correct: Distinct subjects (你 and 我) placed immediately after each 要么 to divide urgent tasks.

## Three Key Pragmatic Uses at Advanced Level

In advanced reading and formal speech, 要么……，要么…… operates beyond simple decision-making. You will encounter it across three distinct communicative situations:

- Decisive dilemmas and ultimatums: Presenting two stark courses of action where hesitation is not an option, often used in business strategy, negotiations, or personal resolve.

- Habitual alternation: Presenting two characteristic activities that alternate in a routine. Whether the description admits exceptions depends on context, not on 要么 alone.

- Exhaustive logical deduction: Analyzing an observed problem or phenomenon by narrowing the possible causes or explanations down to two mutually exclusive hypotheses.

In descriptions of routine or habit, the pattern shows that whenever a given time frame occurs, one of the two actions takes place. Look at how it portrays a predictable schedule:

张教授平时的生活极其规律，周末要么在书房里审阅学术论文，要么去植物园散步。

Zhāng jiàoshòu píngshí de shēnghuó jíqí guīlǜ, zhōumò yàome zài shūfáng lǐ shěnyuè xuéshù lùnwén, yàome qù zhíwùyuán sànbù.

Professor Zhang's daily life is extremely regular; on weekends, he either reviews academic papers in his study or goes for a walk in the botanical garden.

Correct: Describes habitual alternation where free time is consistently split between two fixed activities.

When used for logical inference, the clauses frequently take the form 要么是……，要么是…… (either it is the case that..., or it is the case that...), linking two diagnostic explanations for a preceding fact:

车载导航仪突然失去了信号，要么是刚才经过的隧道屏蔽了网络，要么是设备的天线模块出了故障。

Chēzài dǎohángyí tūrán shīqùle xìnhào, yàome shì gāngcái jīngguò de suìdào píngbìle wǎngluò, yàome shì shèbèi de tiānxiàn mókuài chūle gùzhàng.

The in-car navigation device suddenly lost its signal; either the tunnel we just passed through blocked the network, or the device's antenna module has malfunctioned.

要么是……，要么是…… presents two explanations as alternatives. This is the speaker's proposed analysis, not evidence that the causes cannot coexist or that no other cause is possible.

## Contrasts: 要么 vs. 或者 and 还是

To use 要么……，要么…… accurately, learners must separate it from two earlier-level words for 'or': 还是 (háishi) and 或者 (huòzhě).

- For a neutral direct alternative question asking which option the listener chooses, use 还是. 要么……，要么…… normally presents alternatives rather than asking which one. This does not forbid mentioning 要么 inside a quotation or asking whether a whole either/or proposal is acceptable.

- 或者 often gives options in a relatively neutral tone, while repeated 要么 can make the choice more pointed. Neither connective alone decides whether a list is exhaustive or an ultimatum; that depends on the actual options and context.

- Clause vs. Noun Phrase Scope: While 或者 readily connects two simple nouns (such as 'tea or coffee'), 要么……，要么…… almost always connects predicates, verb phrases, or whole clauses.

If you want the listener to choose between Chinese and English, ask the alternative question with 还是. The following learner sentence is unsuitable for that intended neutral question; this is not a claim that every question containing 要么 is ungrammatical.

At this international academic conference, do you plan to give a report in Chinese, or speak in English?

Correct: Uses 还是 to form a natural alternative question.

Quick check: Are you presenting alternatives or asking the listener which one they choose? Use the repeated 要么 frame for presenting options; for an ordinary direct alternative question, use 还是. Read the context before deciding how strict or exhaustive the choice is.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can 要么 be repeated more than twice if there are three mutually exclusive possibilities?**

Yes. Although binary choices are most common, you can chain three clauses together (要么 A，要么 B，要么 C) when analyzing a situation that has exactly three exhaustive possibilities.

**Is 要么 ever used alone without a second 要么?**

Yes. A single 要么 can introduce an alternative suggestion in conversation. This lesson practises the repeated 要么……，要么…… construction named in the HSK 6 outline; that scope does not establish which variants a particular exam will test.

**What does the pattern 要么不……，要么就…… mean?**

When the first clause is negated and the second clause includes 就 (for example, 'either don't do it at all, or do it thoroughly'), it expresses an 'all-or-nothing' attitude toward an action.
