# HSK 5 Verbal Classifier 眼 (yǎn): Counting Glances and Quick Looks

In Chinese, 眼 (yǎn) is not only the noun for eye; it also serves as a specialized verbal classifier (动量词, dòngliàngcí) that counts brief acts of looking or glancing. This lesson explains its core meaning, object placement rules, and how it differs from general verbal classifiers.

Subject Verb of looking （了） Number (一 / 两 / 几) 眼 Noun object

Example sentence

服务员把菜单递过来，我只看了一眼就点菜了。

fúwùyuán bǎ càidān dì guòlái , wǒ zhǐ kàn le yī yǎn jiù diǎncài le .

The waiter handed over the menu, and I ordered after taking just one look.

Here 看了一眼 (kàn le yī yǎn) highlights that the speaker only glanced briefly at the menu.

## What 眼 (yǎn) Means as a Verbal Classifier

While beginners learn 眼 (yǎn) as the noun meaning eye, the HSK 5 syllabus outline introduces its role under word classes as a verbal classifier (动量词, dòngliàngcí). In this function, 眼 (yǎn) borrows the organ of sight to count individual, brief acts of looking, glancing, or peeking. Rather than measuring how long someone stares, it packages a visual action into a quick, single look.

Because it specifically measures visual actions, 眼 (yǎn) only pairs with verbs of looking. The most frequent verb is 看 (kàn, to look), forming expressions like 看一眼 (kàn yī yǎn, to take a look). In more descriptive contexts, it also combines with specific verbs for glancing or peeking, such as 瞄 (miáo, to cast a glance), 瞥 (piē, to dart a look), or 瞪 (dèng, to glare). The numeral before 眼 (yǎn) is almost always 一 (yī, one), 两 (liǎng, two or a couple), or 几 (jǐ, a few), reflecting that glances happen quickly and are rarely counted in exact large numbers.

他低头瞄了一眼手表，发现快要迟到了。

tā dītóu miáo le yī yǎn shǒubiǎo , fāxiàn kuàiyào chídào le .

He lowered his head, glanced at his watch, and realized he was about to be late.

The noun object 手表 (shǒubiǎo, watch) follows the verbal classifier phrase 一眼 (yī yǎn).

## Sentence Structures and Object Placement

Word order with 一眼 involves both the object and information focus. 看了一眼手表 and 看了手表一眼 can both be natural. With an unstressed personal pronoun, 看了他一眼 is a useful neutral learner model. These are usage patterns, not a guarantee about the frequency of particular exam questions.

A noun object can occur after 一眼, as in 看了一眼手表, or before it, as in 看了手表一眼. Meaning, familiarity and focus help determine the choice; inanimate nouns are not excluded from the second position.

Subject Verb of looking （了） Number (一 / 两 / 几) 眼 Noun object

For an ordinary neutral description, put the personal pronoun before the measure phrase: 看了他一眼. A postposed pronoun can occur when it carries end focus. Learn the neutral order first, then interpret marked ordering from the context.

Subject Verb of looking （了） Pronoun object Number (一 / 两 / 几) 眼

经理抬头看了他一眼，没有说话。

jīnglǐ táitóu kàn le tā yī yǎn , méiyǒu shuōhuà .

The manager looked up, glanced at him, and said nothing.

A natural neutral order with the pronoun 他 before 一眼.

## Natural Word Order and Focus

Use 看了他一眼 for a neutral report of the manager’s glance. Compare 看了一眼他 when the pronoun is intentionally placed in end focus. The two share the basic action and object; discourse focus can motivate their different order. Avoid a rule that every pronoun after 一眼 must be wrong.

经理抬头看了一眼他，没有说话。

jīnglǐ táitóu kàn le yī yǎn tā , méiyǒu shuōhuà .

The manager looked up, glanced at him, and said nothing.

A marked order placing 他 at the end, which can foreground the person looked at. The preceding example’s 看了他一眼 is a clearer neutral model; pronoun-final placement is not universally ungrammatical.

In natural conversation, when the numeral is 一 (yī) and there is no special emphasis on the exact number of glances, speakers frequently omit 一 (yī) directly after 看 (kàn) or 看了 (kàn le), saying 看眼 (kàn yǎn) or 看了眼 (kàn le yǎn). In addition, to express taking a few extra looks out of curiosity or admiration, Chinese uses the fixed pattern 多看两眼 (duō kàn liǎng yǎn) or 多看几眼 (duō kàn jǐ yǎn).

那幅画太特别了，路过的人都会多看几眼。

nà fú huà tài tèbié le , lùguò de rén dōu huì duō kàn jǐ yǎn .

That painting is so special that people passing by will take a few extra looks.

The phrase 多看几眼 (duō kàn jǐ yǎn) naturally expresses taking a few extra glances.

## Contrasts with 次 (cì) and 一下 (yīxià)

Because 看 (kàn) can combine with several different verbal quantifiers, choosing between 眼 (yǎn), 次 (cì), and 一下 (yīxià) changes the meaning and scope of the action:

- 看一眼 (kàn yī yǎn) emphasizes a brief, momentary visual check or glance. You cannot use 眼 (yǎn) to count watching an entire movie or reading a whole book from start to finish, unless you literally mean you only glanced at the screen or page for a moment.

- 看一次 counts an occasion of viewing or checking, not necessarily an entire completed work. 这部电影我看了三次，每次都没看完 is possible: there were three viewing occasions, even though none reached the end.

- 看一下 can soften a request or describe a brief check. 一下 works with a wider range of activities than 眼, while still depending on the verb and intended meaning. In the suitcase example, 看 is read kān for guarding; the point is temporary care, not merely one visual glance.

这部电影我已经看了三次了。

zhè bù diànyǐng wǒ yǐjīng kàn le sān cì le .

I have already watched this movie three times.

次 counts viewing occasions. Completion is common in context but is not guaranteed by 次 itself.

请帮我看一下这个箱子，我去买瓶水。

qǐng bāng wǒ kān yīxià zhège xiāngzi , wǒ qù mǎi píng shuǐ .

Please help me watch this suitcase for a moment while I go buy a bottle of water.

When 看 (kān) means to look after or guard something for a short while, 一下 (yīxià) is used instead of 一眼 (yī yǎn).

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I use 眼 (yǎn) with verbs of listening or speaking?**

No. As a verbal classifier, 眼 (yǎn) only counts actions performed with the eyes, such as 看 (kàn, to look), 瞄 (miáo, to glance), or 瞥 (piē, to glimpse). It cannot be paired with listening or speaking verbs.

**When can I drop the number 一 (yī) before 眼 (yǎn)?**

You can omit 一 (yī) when 眼 (yǎn) immediately follows the verb or the aspect particle 了 (le), such as 看眼手机 (kàn yǎn shǒujī) or 看了眼时间 (kàn le yǎn shíjiān). However, if a pronoun comes between the verb and the classifier, such as 看了他一眼 (kàn le tā yī yǎn), you should keep 一 (yī) so the rhythm and meaning stay clear.

**Does 眼 (yǎn) have any other classifier uses in Chinese?**

Yes. 眼 can also be a nominal measure word, for example 一眼井 for a well or 一眼泉 for a spring. That is a separate use; the supplied HSK 5 item here focuses on counting visual actions as a verbal classifier.
