# HSK 5 Hypothetical Complex Sentences: 万一……，（就）……

The hypothetical complex sentence pattern 万一……，（就）…… introduces a low-probability, usually unfavorable condition (just in case or if by any chance) followed by a contingency plan, warning, or question about how to respond.

万一 Unlikely / unfavorable condition ， Subject 就 Backup action or consequence

Example sentence

万一明天下大雨，我们就把户外的迎新活动改在体育馆举行。

Wànyī míngtiān xià dàyǔ, wǒmen jiù bǎ hùwài de yíngxīn huódòng gǎi zài tǐyùguǎn jǔxíng.

If by any chance it rains heavily tomorrow, we will move the outdoor orientation event to the gymnasium.

Uses 万一……，就…… to introduce an unlikely, unfavorable weather condition and a concrete backup plan.

## 1. Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

In the HSK Level 5 grammar syllabus under sentence types and complex sentences (复句), 万一……，（就）…… is classified as a hypothetical complex sentence (假设复句). While basic conditional words simply introduce an open assumption, 万一 literally originates from the idea of one in ten thousand. As a conjunction, it means if by any chance or just in case.

万一 frames a contingency from the speaker’s perspective. It is often used for an unwanted event and a precaution or backup response. It can also raise a welcome but uncertain possibility, especially tentatively or humorously. It does not assign an exact numerical probability.

Uses 万一……，就…… to introduce an unlikely, unfavorable weather condition and a concrete backup plan.

## 2. Sentence Structures: With and Without 就

The outline notation 万一……，（就）…… shows that the adverb 就 in the second clause is common but optional. Choosing whether to include 就 depends on the structure and communicative goal of the main clause.

万一 Unlikely / unfavorable condition ， Subject 就 Backup action or consequence

When the second clause presents a direct contingency plan, an immediate decision, or a direct logical result, 就 is placed after the subject of the second clause and before the verb phrase. Note that in Mandarin, the adverb 就 must never precede the subject.

万一那趟高铁的票卖完了，我就改坐第二天早上的飞机过去。

Wànyī nà tàng gāotiě de piào màiwán le, wǒ jiù gǎi zuò dì-èr tiān zǎoshang de fēijī guòqù.

If by any chance tickets for that high-speed train sell out, I will take a flight the next morning instead.

Shows standard placement of 就 directly after the subject 我 in the result clause.

你最好提前三个小时去机场，万一路上堵车，你就赶不上航班了。

Nǐ zuìhǎo tíqián sān gè xiǎoshí qù jīchǎng, wànyī lùshang dǔchē, nǐ jiù gǎnbushàng hángbān le.

You had better go to the airport three hours early; if by any chance there is a traffic jam on the way, you won't be able to catch your flight.

Uses 万一……，就…… after a piece of advice to warn about an unwanted consequence.

万一 Unlikely / unfavorable condition ， Consequence or question about how to respond

就 can be omitted when the relation remains clear, including before a question or a clause with a modal. Other adverbs do not automatically force omission: 都 can occur with 就, while 便 can serve as an alternative result-linking word. Learn each complete sentence rather than treating these words as one interchangeable class.

重要文件一定要备份，万一电脑出故障，几个月的努力都会白费。

Zhòngyào wénjiàn yídìng yào bèifèn, wànyī diànnǎo chū gùzhàng, jǐ gè yuè de nǔlì dōu huì báifèi.

Important files must be backed up; just in case the computer breaks down, several months of hard work would all be wasted.

This is a warning about possible loss, understood in the context of not having a recoverable copy. 就 is omitted naturally; 都会 quantifies the effort and predicts the consequence. 都 does not prohibit 就, since 就都会 is also possible.

万一客户不同意这个报价，我们该怎么调整谈判策略呢？

Wànyī kèhù bù tóngyì zhège bàojià, wǒmen gāi zěnme tiáozhěng tánpàn cèlüè ne?

What if the client does not agree to this price quote—how should we adjust our negotiation strategy?

Omits 就 when the second clause is a question asking how to respond to a potential setback.

## 3. When to Use This Pattern

Because 万一 carries a built-in sense of caution, native speakers use 万一……，（就）…… in three typical communicative contexts:

- Explaining a backup plan: Stating what alternative action you will take if an obstacle arises (such as bad weather, sold-out tickets, or equipment failure).

- Justifying a precaution: Explaining why you are being careful right now (for example, leaving early or backing up files) by pointing out the negative consequence that would follow an unexpected mishap.

- Raising a risk in discussion: Asking colleagues or friends how to handle a potential setback before it happens.

Note on word class: 万一 can also function as a noun meaning a slim chance or unexpected event in fixed phrases like 以防万一 (to guard against the unexpected). However, within the complex sentence pattern 万一……，（就）……, it functions strictly as a conjunction introducing the subordinate clause.

## Common Precautionary Uses and Positive Possibilities

A risk or unwelcome contingency is a common setting for 万一. It is a useful beginner default, but not an absolute grammatical restriction. Positive outcomes can be introduced too, as in a tentative joke about unexpectedly passing an exam.

如果 is neutral about whether a condition is expected or welcome. 万一 foregrounds a contingency—often a concern, sometimes a welcome surprise treated as unlikely. Choose according to the speaker’s stance. Good news does not have to become a problem before 万一 can be used.

万一我这次能顺利考上理想的大学，我就请大家吃饭。

Wànyī wǒ zhè cì néng shùnlì kǎoshàng lǐxiǎng de dàxué, wǒ jiù qǐng dàjiā chīfàn.

If I do happen to get into my dream university this time, I’ll treat everyone to a meal.

This is possible when the speaker treats admission as a long shot and speaks tentatively or humorously. 万一 does not make the desired outcome negative. 如果 would be a more neutral way to introduce the same condition.

如果我这次能顺利考上理想的大学，我就请大家吃饭。

Rúguǒ wǒ zhè cì néng shùnlì kǎoshàng lǐxiǎng de dàxué, wǒ jiù qǐng dàjiā chīfàn.

If I can successfully get into my ideal university this time, I will treat everyone to a meal.

如果 introduces the condition neutrally. Compare the preceding 万一 version, which can suggest “if it happens against expectations” rather than an error.

- Check the probability: Is the condition something the speaker treats as a small chance rather than a certainty?

- Check the stance: are you preparing for a risk, or playfully allowing for a welcome surprise? Use 如果 for a neutral condition without that contingency emphasis.

- Check the word order of 就: When using 就 in the second clause, always place it after the second clause's subject, never before it.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can 就 be placed before the subject of the second clause in 万一……，就……?**

No. Like in other Chinese conditional sentences, 就 is an adverb and must stand after the subject of the second clause and before the verb or modal verb (for example, 万一……，我们就……). It only appears right after the comma if the subject of the second clause is omitted.

**Why do some 万一 clauses end with 呢 or 怎么办?**

万一 can introduce a question about how to respond, such as 万一客户不同意，我们该怎么办呢？ No 就 is needed. Questions can also use 就 with another structure, so question mood does not impose an absolute ban.

**Can 万一 ever be used with an event that sounds positive on the surface?**

Yes. A positive long shot can be expressed tentatively or humorously: 万一这次考上了呢？ The result need not be unwelcome to the speaker. In a neutral statement of a desired plan, 如果 is often the straightforward choice.
