# Using 再……也…… for an Unchanged Result

The compact pattern 再……也…… says that even if a condition reaches a high degree, the stated result still holds. Learn where to place the condition and result, when the pattern fits, and how it differs from simply describing a degree.

再 Condition 也 Result

Example sentence

再大的雨，我们也要按时出发。

Zài dà de yǔ, wǒmen yě yào ànshí chūfā.

No matter how heavy the rain is, we still have to set off on time.

再大的雨 is a noun phrase with a degree-based condition. It does not assert how much rain actually falls.

## Meaning: a strong condition, an unchanged result

再……也…… forms a compact concessive sentence. The first part presents a condition as extreme, difficult, or otherwise significant; the second says what remains true despite it. In English, the idea is often expressed with “no matter how,” “even if,” or “however.” The pattern does not mean that the condition causes the result. Instead, it highlights that the result holds across the imagined range of that condition.

The outline identifies this point as a type of compact complex sentence at HSK 5. That establishes the scope and level of this lesson; it does not establish which version of an examination is currently administered at any particular test centre.

Here the rain is an obstacle, but leaving on time remains the plan. The sentence is a statement, not a question. Depending on context, it can sound determined or matter-of-fact.

## How to form the pattern

Put 再 before the scalar condition and 也 before the response that stays in force. Adjectives such as 忙 or 复杂 are common; a negative mental-state phrase such as 不愿意 also works. The construction is about degree in this use, rather than 再 meaning “do it again.” Subjects can be shared or different when the context makes their roles clear.

再 Condition 也 Result

- Adjective condition: 再 + adjective (sometimes followed by 的 + noun) + 也 + result.

- Verb-phrase condition: subject + 再 + 不愿意 + 也 + response, as in the request to hear the explanation out. Choose a phrase whose degree can be understood in context.

- The result clause carries the speaker’s conclusion, plan, or advice. It can express intention, ability, necessity, or another response that remains in force.

他再忙，也会抽时间看望父母。

Tā zài máng, yě huì chōu shíjiān kànwàng fùmǔ.

No matter how busy he is, he still makes time to visit his parents.

再忙 ranges over possible degrees of busyness. 也会 presents the response as unchanged across that range.

这个问题再复杂，我们也得先弄清楚条件。

Zhège wèntí zài fùzá, wǒmen yě děi xiān nòng qīngchu tiáojiàn.

No matter how complicated this problem is, we still need to clarify the conditions first.

The condition does not cause the duty to clarify the conditions; that duty holds despite the complication.

你再不愿意，也要先听完他的解释。

Nǐ zài bú yuànyì, yě yào xiān tīng wán tā de jiěshì.

No matter how reluctant you are, you should hear his explanation out first.

不愿意 is a negative mental-state verb phrase. 再 emphasizes how reluctant the person may be.

A comma often marks the boundary between the condition and the result in writing. It is a useful reading cue, not a required part of the spoken pattern.

## When it fits, and how it sounds

Use this pattern when you want to acknowledge a challenging circumstance and make clear that it will not change the outcome you state. It works for firm plans, commitments, and practical advice. In conversation, it may reassure someone (“I will still make time”) or emphasize resolve (“we must still clarify the conditions”). The words themselves do not make every sentence a promise or a command; the result clause and the situation determine that pragmatic force.

Although the condition often describes a high degree, the sentence need not quantify that degree. The point is the contrast between the condition and the result, rather than a measured level of rain, busyness, or difficulty. The same frame can be used with different conditions and results, provided the relationship makes sense in context.

## Contrast an asserted degree with a concessive range

Compare this pattern with an ordinary degree description. “The problem is very complicated” describes how complicated the problem is; 再……也…… adds a result that holds despite that complication. When the intended meaning is only “very,” leave out the concessive frame. When you mean “even under this difficult condition, the result still applies,” include both 再 and 也.

他很忙，也会抽时间看望父母。

Tā hěn máng, yě huì chōu shíjiān kànwàng fùmǔ.

He is very busy, but he still makes time to visit his parents.

This is a grammatical contrast, not an error. 很忙 asserts a high degree of busyness; 再忙 in the paired example presents a range of possible degrees.

他很忙，也会抽时间看望父母 is grammatical: the speaker states that he is busy and adds a response. 他再忙，也会抽时间看望父母 says that the response holds no matter how busy he may be. The difference is meaning, not a rule that only one sentence is correct.

A result can also be a question if the speaker is genuinely asking what follows under an extreme condition, but 再……也…… is often used in statements and advice. Do not treat every sentence with the pattern as a question or as a rhetorical question: read the punctuation, wording, and context.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does 也 introduce a result that is guaranteed in every real situation?**

No. The pattern presents the result as holding despite the stated condition in the speaker’s claim or plan. Whether it actually happens depends on the situation.

**Must there be a comma before 也?**

A comma is common in writing to separate the condition and result, but the spoken pattern does not depend on punctuation.

**Can this pattern appear in a question?**

Yes, for example 路再远，我们也能按时到吗？ can ask whether arriving on time is possible even with a long journey. The context determines whether it is a genuine inquiry or rhetorical. The concessive markers themselves do not make a question.
