# HSK 5 Potential Complement 2: Verb + 得 / 不得

Verb + 得 / 不得 can express whether an action is possible, tolerable or appropriate. Context distinguishes inability, reluctance and warnings. Learn familiar combinations rather than freely adding 得 to every verb or assuming that 不得 can never be followed by an object.

Subject / Topic Verb 得

Example sentence

这种野生蘑菇有毒，绝对吃不得。

Zhè zhǒng yěshēng mógū yǒudú, juéduì chī bu de.

This kind of wild mushroom is poisonous; it must not be eaten.

Correct: The patient (wild mushroom) serves as the topic/subject, and 吃不得 warns of harmful consequences.

## Core Meaning and Syllabus Scope

In the HSK 5 grammar outline, Potential Complement 2 (可能补语2) is defined as the pattern 动词+得/不得 (Verb + 得 / 不得). Unlike standard potential complements that attach a specific result or direction after 得 or 不 (such as 看得见 or 走不动), this construction uses 得 (de) or 不得 (bu de) directly after the verb as the complement itself.

The meaning depends on the combination and context. 这种蘑菇吃不得 can warn against eating it; 吃不得苦 describes difficulty tolerating hardship; 舍不得扔 expresses reluctance to throw something away. Do not define every 不得 form as a person being physically capable but morally or practically forbidden to act.

这么严肃的场合，这种玩笑开不得。

Zhème yánsù de chǎnghé, zhè zhǒng wánxiào kāi bu de.

In such a serious setting, this kind of joke must not be made.

Correct: 开不得 indicates that making the joke is socially inappropriate.

## Sentence Structures and Usage Asymmetry

Topic-first warnings are common: 这种玩笑开不得 puts the joke first. An action-doer subject is also possible, and some familiar combinations take an object after 不得, as in 他吃不得苦 or 这种事开不得玩笑. Learn the pattern used by the particular expression.

Subject / Topic Verb 得

Subject / Topic Verb 不得

Negative combinations such as 吃不得、急不得 and 动不得 are familiar in warnings. The corresponding affirmative forms are not freely interchangeable with 能 + verb. Positive meanings are often learned in established words such as 舍得; for an ordinary statement of ability or permission, 能 or 可以 is usually the clearer starting point.

恢复健康需要时间，这件事急不得。

Huīfù jiànkāng xūyào shíjiān, zhè jiàn shì jí bu de.

Recovering one's health takes time; this matter cannot be rushed.

Correct: 急不得 is a very common advisory phrase meaning rushing will not help or will cause harm.

这点儿钱，我舍得花。

Zhè diǎnr qián, wǒ shěde huā.

I’m willing to spend this small amount of money.

舍得 is a familiar whole word expressing willingness to part with or spend something. Here 花 is the action the speaker is willing to perform.

## Familiar Words and Object-Taking Combinations

Learn these established words with their meanings. 舍不得 can be followed by the thing or action one is reluctant to give up. 怪不得 may introduce “no wonder,” a different discourse function. Object-taking is not reserved for this list: 吃不得苦 and 开不得玩笑 are also familiar. Their individual collocations matter more than one blanket ban.

Subject / Topic Verb 不得 Object / Clause

- 舍不得 (shěbude) / 舍得 (shěde): to hate to part with or use something / to be willing to part with or spend.

- 怪不得 (guàibude): no wonder (used to express sudden realization of a cause; also means 'cannot blame').

- 巴不得 (bābude): to be only too anxious to; to wish earnestly that something happens.

- 恨不得 (hènbude): to wish one could (often introducing an exaggerated desire or action).

那件旧毛衣是奶奶织的，我一直舍不得扔。

Nà jiàn jiù máoyī shì nǎinai zhī de, wǒ yīzhí shěbude rēng.

That old sweater was knitted by my grandmother; I have never been able to bear throwing it away.

Correct: 舍不得 is a lexicalized form and naturally takes the verb object 扔.

外边下大雨了，怪不得这么冷。

Wàibiān xià dàyǔ le, guàibude zhème lěng.

It is raining heavily outside; no wonder it is so cold.

Correct: 怪不得 functions as a fixed expression introducing a realized result or reason.

## Contrasts, Topics and Objects

吃不了 often describes being unable to eat or finish a quantity; 吃不得 can emphasize a prohibition, a risk or inability to tolerate something. The meanings overlap in context. A rule or practical restriction can also make 走不了 natural, so 不了 is not limited to physical inability. Read the reason given in the sentence.

我今天胃不舒服，吃不了这么多饭。

Wǒ jīntiān wèi bù shūfu, chī bu liǎo zhème duō fàn.

My stomach feels unwell today, so I cannot eat (finish) this much food.

吃不了这么多饭 describes limited capacity for this amount. Compare the mushroom warning, where 吃不得 concerns that food being unsafe to eat.

The two mushroom warnings place information differently. 这种野生蘑菇有毒，绝对吃不得 foregrounds the mushroom; 这种野生蘑菇有毒，你不能吃它 addresses the listener explicitly. Both are natural. For other 不得 combinations, check the whole phrase before deciding whether an object may follow.

这种野生蘑菇有毒，你不能吃它。

Zhè zhǒng yěshēng mógū yǒudú, nǐ bù néng chī tā.

This kind of wild mushroom is poisonous; you must not eat it.

你不能吃它 is a natural subject–predicate–object warning. Compare the topic-first warning with 吃不得 earlier; the difference here is presentation.

Use the complete combination: 这种玩笑开不得 and 这种事开不得玩笑 are both possible. Topic-first order is useful, but it is not the only structure. Keep ordinary inability, tolerance, prohibition and established word meanings distinct in context.

## Frequently asked questions

**How is 得 pronounced in Verb + 得 / 不得?**

得 is de in the potential patterns and in words such as 舍得 and 舍不得, usually unstressed. The middle 不 can also be light in speech. Distinguish these from the pre-verbal prohibition 不得 (bùdé), as in 不得入内, and from the modal reading děi, “must.”

**How does Verb + 不得 differ from 不可以 + Verb?**

不可以 + verb directly says an action is not permitted or acceptable. A familiar verb + 不得 phrase may sound like an evaluation or warning, but its exact meaning depends on the verb and context. Both may express a prohibition; this is not a categorical split between a person and an objective situation.

**Can I use Verb + 得 with any verb to mean 'can do'?**

No. Learn established combinations such as 舍得 and their meanings instead of creating a positive 得 form for every verb. 我舍得花这笔钱 expresses willingness to spend; it is not a rule that any verb followed by 得 means “can.” For general ability or permission, 能 or 可以 plus the verb is the usual starting point.
