# HSK 5 Modal Adverbs (语气副词): Expressing Attitude, Expectation, and Emphasis

Modal adverbs in Mandarin allow speakers to inject personal judgment, surprise, certainty, or concession directly into a statement. This guide covers the twelve Level 5 modal adverbs from the HSK outline, organizing them by communicative function and syntactic placement.

Subject Modal adverb Verb / Adjective predicate

Example sentence

别怪他，毕竟他还是个新手；反正这次也不算正式比赛。

bié guài tā , bì jìng tā hái shì gè xīn shǒu ; fǎn zhèng zhè cì yě bù suàn zhèng shì bǐ sài .

Don't blame him, after all he is still a beginner; anyway, this time doesn't count as an official competition.

Shows 毕竟 introducing an underlying reason for leniency and 反正 dismissing the importance of the outcome.

A common mistake

× 他平时最守时，我以为他今天也会准时到，没想到他果然迟到了半个小时。

Tā píngshí zuì shǒushí, wǒ yǐwéi tā jīntiān yě huì zhǔnshí dào, méi xiǎngdào tā guǒrán chídào le bàn gè xiǎoshí.

Intended: He is usually the most punctual. I expected him to be on time today too, but to my surprise he was half an hour late.

Incorrect for the intended neutral reading: the speaker explicitly expected him to arrive on time, so 果然 does not fit that expectation. 居然 expresses the surprise. A different earlier prediction or an ironic voice could change the choice in another context.

Corrected example: 他平时最守时，我以为他今天也会准时到，没想到他居然迟到了半个小时。

## What Are Modal Adverbs and Where Do They Go?

The supplied HSK 5 outline groups these twelve items under 语气副词. They help express the speaker’s stance toward a situation: a reminder, expectation, surprise, emphasis or evaluation of effort. The label 可3 identifies the emphatic use in this document; it is not a universal dictionary sense number.

Most modal adverbs appear between the subject and the main verb or adjective predicate. However, several items that evaluate an entire situation—especially 毕竟 (after all), 反正 (anyway), and sometimes 果然 (as expected) or 居然 (unexpectedly)—can also stand at the beginning of a clause before the subject.

## Expectation, Surprise, and Reversal: 居然, 果然, and 反而

The first three words compare an event with an expectation. To choose one, identify whose expectation is being described and what that expectation was.

- 居然 (jū rán): Indicates that an outcome goes against common sense or the speaker's expectation ('unexpectedly', 'to one's surprise').

- 果然 (guǒ rán): Confirms that a result matches an earlier prediction, rumor, or guess ('sure enough', 'just as expected').

- 反而 marks an outcome or response that goes against the expected direction. It need not be the exact logical opposite: 想帮忙，反而添了麻烦 contrasts the intention to help with adding trouble.

这么简单的题，他居然做错了。

zhè me jiǎn dān de tí , tā jū rán zuò cuò le .

Such a simple question, he unexpectedly got it wrong.

居然 highlights the speaker's surprise at an unlikely outcome.

天气预报说有雨，下午果然下起来了。

tiān qì yù bào shuō yǒu yǔ , xià wǔ guǒ rán xià qǐ lái le .

The weather forecast said there would be rain, and sure enough it started raining in the afternoon.

果然 confirms that the actual event matched the earlier forecast.

吃了药以后，他的头反而更疼了。

chī le yào yǐ hòu , tā de tóu fǎn ér gèng téng le .

After taking the medicine, his head hurt even more instead.

反而 marks a reversal of the normal expectation that medicine reduces pain.

## Reasoning and Certainty: 毕竟, 反正, 的确, and 绝对

These words can support an explanation or express how firmly the speaker presents a claim. 毕竟 recalls a reason, 反正 keeps a conclusion unchanged, 的确 confirms, and 绝对 adds categorical emphasis.

- 毕竟 (bì jìng): Points to an underlying fundamental reason that should be taken into account ('after all'). It often softens criticism or explains why a limit exists.

- 反正 (fǎn zhèng): Signals that regardless of changing circumstances or reasons, the conclusion or decision remains unchanged ('anyway', 'in any case').

- 的确 (dí què): Acknowledges that a statement or quality is genuinely true ('indeed', 'really'), often echoing something already mentioned or observed.

- 绝对 (jué duì): Expresses unconditional certainty or a firm promise without exception ('absolutely', 'definitely').

这家店的菜的确不错，下次我绝对还来。

zhè jiā diàn de cài dí què bù cuò , xià cì wǒ jué duì hái lái .

The food at this restaurant is indeed good; next time I will definitely come again.

的确 confirms an observed fact, while 绝对 expresses a firm future commitment.

## Strong Emphasis and Extreme Tone: 根本, 简直, and 可3

根本、简直 and emphatic 可 add force in different ways. The outline labels this use of 可 as 可3; here it emphasizes a reminder rather than expressing permission or the meaning “but.”

- 根本 (gēn běn): Primarily used in negative sentences (with 不, 没, or 无) to mean 'not at all' or 'from the very root'. In affirmative clauses, it usually means 'fundamentally'.

- 简直 (jiǎn zhí): Introduces an exaggerated or near-complete comparison ('simply', 'virtually'), indicating that a state is so extreme it borders on something else.

- 可 (kě, sense 3): Placed directly before a verb, adjective, or modal verb to intensify the tone in earnest reminders, warnings, exclamations, or rhetorical questions.

我根本不认识他，这简直是个误会。

wǒ gēn běn bù rèn shi tā , zhè jiǎn zhí shì gè wù huì .

I don't know him at all; this is simply a misunderstanding.

根本 reinforces the negation 不认识, and 简直 emphasizes the nature of the situation.

路上结冰了，你开车可要小心点儿。

lù shang jié bīng le , nǐ kāi chē kě yào xiǎo xīn diǎnr .

The road has iced over; you really must be careful when driving.

可 (sense 3) adds earnest emphasis to the reminder 要小心.

## Evaluating Outcomes and Timing: 刚好 and 白

刚好 indicates that a quantity or time fits exactly, or that something happens to coincide. 白 in the “in vain” sense evaluates an action or reaction as failing to achieve the intended effect; compare 白跑 and 白高兴.

Subject 白 action or mental reaction （了）

钱刚好够买票，总算没白跑一趟。

Qián gānghǎo gòu mǎi piào, zǒngsuàn méi bái pǎo yī tàng.

The money is just enough to buy the ticket, so finally I didn't make the trip in vain.

Combines 刚好 ('just enough') with 没白跑 ('didn't go for nothing').

For “in vain,” 白 can modify an action or a mental reaction: 白跑一趟, 白等 and 白高兴一场 are natural. It need not be followed by 了, as in 别白跑一趟. In another use, 白 means “for free,” as in 白送; choose the meaning from the whole phrase.

## Common Learner Mistake: Confusing 果然 and 居然

Use the expectation stated or implied for the relevant speaker. In the pair below, that speaker expects punctuality and is surprised by lateness, so 居然 fits. 果然 would need a prediction of lateness instead. A habit by itself is not enough to fix the choice if the surrounding context gives another expectation or a different viewpoint.

他平时最守时，我以为他今天也会准时到，没想到他居然迟到了半个小时。

Tā píngshí zuì shǒushí, wǒ yǐwéi tā jīntiān yě huì zhǔnshí dào, méi xiǎngdào tā jūrán chídào le bàn gè xiǎoshí.

He is usually the most punctual. I expected him to be on time today too, but to my surprise he was half an hour late.

居然 matches this speaker’s stated expectation being broken. The correction keeps the same event and changes only the expectation word.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I choose between 毕竟 and 反正 when giving an explanation?**

Use 毕竟 ('after all') when you want to remind the listener of an important fact or reason that explains the situation. Use 反正 ('anyway') when you want to say that the details or reasons do not matter because the final conclusion stays the same.

**Can 反而 be used without a prior context?**

No. Because 反而 expresses a reversal of an expected direction ('instead / on the contrary'), it requires an explicit or clearly implied first clause or background expectation to contrast against.

**Does studying this Level 5 list guarantee these exact items on my next HSK test?**

This grouping reflects the Level 5 grammar row in the 2025-11 HSK outline (labeled for 2026-07 implementation). Because test administration versions vary by test center and date, treat this list as a structured study scope rather than a guarantee of a specific booked exam.
