# First, then: ordering actions with 首先……，然后……

Use 首先……，然后…… to guide a reader or listener through events or actions in their order. This lesson focuses on the HSK 4 outline pattern for a sequential compound sentence.

首先 first action or event ，然后 next action or event

Example sentence

我来准备会议室：首先确认设备能不能正常使用，然后把需要的材料放到桌上。

Wǒ lái zhǔnbèi huìyìshì: shǒuxiān quèrèn shèbèi néng bu néng zhèngcháng shǐyòng, ránhòu bǎ xūyào de cáiliào fàng dào zhuō shàng.

I will prepare the meeting room: first check whether the equipment works properly, then put the necessary materials on the table.

Preparing the room is the overall task. 首先 and 然后 organize its two steps, with 我 understood throughout.

## Meaning: mark the order of events

首先 means “first” or “to begin with,” and 然后 means “then” or “after that.” Together they connect two clauses and make their order clear: the first action or event comes before the second. The second clause normally follows from the first in the described sequence. The pattern is useful when explaining a plan, giving directions, describing a process, or reporting what happened.

我会首先说明这次调整的原因，然后介绍新的安排，请大家听完再提问。

Wǒ huì shǒuxiān shuōmíng zhè cì tiáozhěng de yuányīn, ránhòu jièshào xīn de ānpái, qǐng dàjiā tīng wán zài tíwèn.

I will first explain the reason for this adjustment and then introduce the new arrangements. Please wait until I finish before asking questions.

The speaker is the subject of both explanation steps; the final clause is a request to the audience.

The order is meaningful. If you swap the clauses, you describe a different sequence. This pattern is not simply a way to mention two related facts: it presents one as the first step or event and the other as what comes next. The outline identifies this point as a type of 承接复句, a compound sentence expressing succession.

## Formation: state the first step, then the next

The basic shape is 首先 + first clause， 然后 + second clause. Each clause can include its own subject, time, place, or object as needed. When the subject stays the same, Chinese often leaves it unstated in the second clause if context makes it clear. The pattern works with actions and with events; it does not require both clauses to have identical grammar.

首先 first action or event ，然后 next action or event

我们做实验时，首先把两种液体分别倒进杯子里，然后观察颜色有没有变化。

Wǒmen zuò shíyàn shí, shǒuxiān bǎ liǎng zhǒng yètǐ fēnbié dào jìn bēizi lǐ, ránhòu guānchá yánsè yǒu méiyǒu biànhuà.

When we do the experiment, we first pour the two liquids into separate cups and then observe whether the color changes.

The actions are successive steps in an experiment.

申请这张卡要准备身份证和照片，首先填写申请表，然后把材料交给工作人员。

Shēnqǐng zhè zhāng kǎ yào zhǔnbèi shēnfènzhèng hé zhàopiàn, shǒuxiān tiánxiě shēnqǐngbiǎo, ránhòu bǎ cáiliào jiāo gěi gōngzuò rényuán.

To apply for this card, prepare your ID card and a photo; first fill out the application form, then hand the materials to a staff member.

The clauses describe successive parts of an application process.

Use punctuation to separate the steps. A marker can introduce a clause, or a shared subject can come before it: 我会首先说明原因，然后介绍安排. Do not force the marker to be the very first word of every clause.

## Use it in explanations, instructions, and questions

- In a plan, it shows what you will do first and what follows.

- In instructions, it makes a multi-step process easier to follow.

- In a report, it presents events in the order they occurred.

你第一次参加这个活动时，首先要去哪里报到，然后还需要做什么？

Nǐ dì yī cì cānjiā zhège huódòng shí, shǒuxiān yào qù nǎlǐ bàodào, ránhòu hái xūyào zuò shénme?

When you take part in this activity for the first time, where should you report first, and what else do you need to do afterward?

The sentence asks for information about the order of steps.

The pattern can appear in a question when asking someone to explain an order of steps. In the example, the question word 哪里 asks for the first place, while 什么 asks what else is needed. The question remains about the sequence; 首先 and 然后 do not themselves make a sentence interrogative.

## A useful contrast: sequence or simple listing

Use 首先……，然后…… when the second action or event comes after the first. For a simple list of points that need not represent successive steps, a different listing expression may fit better. In particular, 首先……，其次…… is a neighboring outline pattern for presenting points in order; it is outside the scope of this lesson. Do not treat 然后 as interchangeable with every connector meaning “also” or “and.”

Before using the pattern, ask: does the second clause happen after the first? If yes, 首先……，然后…… can make that sequence explicit. If the clauses are only two parallel points, choose a listing form suited to that meaning.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do both clauses need to name the subject?**

No. Name a subject where needed for clarity. If the same subject continues and context is clear, it can be omitted from the second clause.

**Can this pattern be used in a question?**

Yes. The clauses can form part of a question about what happens first and what follows. Question words and question intonation or punctuation make it a question; the sequence markers alone do not.

**Does 然后 always mean that one action immediately follows another?**

It marks what comes next in the described order, but does not by itself promise that the interval is immediate. The surrounding context determines how much time passes.
