# HSK 4 Grammar: 把 Sentences with Reduplicated Verbs (主语+把+宾语+动词（+一/了）+动词)

In Chinese, a 把 sentence generally cannot end with a bare monosyllabic verb. One natural way to complete the predicate at the HSK 4 level is verb reduplication, with or without 一 or 了 in the middle, which softens the tone or shows that a brief action was performed on a specific object.

Subject 把 Object Verb Repeated Verb

Example sentence

出门以前，你把房间收拾收拾。

Chūmén yǐqián, nǐ bǎ fángjiān shōushi shōushi.

Before going out, tidy up the room a bit.

Uses the two-syllable reduplicated verb 收拾收拾 (ABAB) after 把 + object to make a household reminder sound less harsh.

A common mistake

× 请把你的计划说。

Qǐng bǎ nǐ de jìhuà shuō.

Intended: Please talk about your plan a bit.

For this standalone request, 说 alone leaves the predicate incomplete. Compare the natural 说一说 in the next example; a suitable complement is another option in other intended meanings.

Corrected example: 请把你的计划说一说。

## Why Reduplicated Verbs Work in 把 Sentences

In the HSK 4 grammar outline, the special sentence pattern 把字句2 includes the structure 主语+把+宾语+动词（+一/了）+动词.

把 highlights how the subject handles or affects a particular object. In an ordinary stand-alone statement or request, a completely unmodified verb predicate is often insufficient. Reduplication is one way to give it fuller form and a limited-action meaning. Other constructions can also supply what is needed; do not infer that every 把 sentence must have a complement after its final verb.

## The Three Reduplicated Forms

The outline formula groups three closely related predicate shapes depending on whether the verb is repeated directly, separated by 一, or separated by 了.

Subject 把 Object Verb Repeated Verb

Direct repetition (V + V) works with both monosyllabic verbs (like 收收 or 改改) and two-syllable action verbs (which repeat in the ABAB pattern, such as 收拾收拾 or 整理整理). Notice that two-syllable verbs do not insert 一 in the middle.

Subject 把 Object Verb 一 Repeated Verb

Inserting 一 between repeated verbs (V + 一 + V) is used with monosyllabic verbs (such as 收一收, 改一改, or 说一说). Like direct repetition, it is most often used for actions that have not happened yet, such as polite requests, suggestions, or immediate intentions.

Subject 把 Object Verb 了 Repeated Verb

V + 了 + V presents a limited action as realized, as in 关了关 or 算了算. Two-syllable verbs can also use AB + 了 + AB, such as 收拾了收拾. The key contrast is the realized-action marking, not a rule that every reduplicated form with 了 must use a one-syllable verb.

## Using V + V and V + 一 + V for Requests and Suggestions

Reduplication can make a request sound less demanding by presenting the action as limited or tentative. It is common in reminders and suggestions, but politeness also depends on the words, relationship and tone. An impatient command does not become friendly automatically just because its verb is repeated.

请大家把桌上的练习本收一收。

Qǐng dàjiā bǎ zhuō shàng de liànxíběn shōu yī shōu.

Everyone, please collect the exercise books on the desk.

Uses Verb + 一 + Verb (收一收) to soften a classroom request directed at a specific object.

我们先把会议的时间改一改吧。

Wǒmen xiān bǎ huìyì de shíjiān gǎi yī gǎi ba.

Let's adjust the time of the meeting a little first.

Uses Verb + 一 + Verb (改一改) with 吧 to propose a tentative change to a known arrangement.

In each of these sentences, the object after 把 (the room, the exercise books on the desk, the meeting time) is specific and identifiable to both speaker and listener. You can also turn this pattern into a polite question or request for permission by embedding it under a modal verb or a question tag, such as asking whether you may adjust the schedule a little.

## Using V + 了 + V for Completed Brief Actions

When narrating what someone did to an object in the past or before another event, V + 了 + V shows that the subject performed the action briefly, quickly, or as a quick check. Because it describes a realized action, it frequently appears in the first clause of a sentence, followed by a second clause that states what the person noticed, thought, or did next.

出门前，妈妈把窗户关了关，发现没锁好。

Chūmén qián, māma bǎ chuānghu guān le guān, fāxiàn méi suǒ hǎo.

Before going out, Mom gave the window a quick push to close it and found it wasn't locked properly.

Uses Verb + 了 + Verb (关了关) to describe a brief, realized action that leads into a discovery.

他把合同里的数字算了算，觉得没有问题。

Tā bǎ hétong lǐ de shùzì suàn le suàn, juéde méiyǒu wèntí.

He briefly calculated the numbers in the contract and felt there was no problem.

Uses Verb + 了 + Verb (算了算) to show a quick check performed on a specific object in the past.

## Important Contrasts and Common Pitfalls

For the standalone request intended here, 请把你的计划说 is not a natural complete form. 请把你的计划说一说 supplies a limited-action predicate. A result complement such as 说清楚 is another possible predicate, with a different emphasis. The point is to build a suitable complete request, not to require reduplication in every 把 sentence.

请把你的计划说一说。

Qǐng bǎ nǐ de jìhuà shuō yī shuō.

Please talk about your plan a bit.

Correct replacement for “请把你的计划说。”: Reduplicating the verb as 说一说 fulfills the structural requirement at the end of the 把 sentence and keeps the request polite.

- Keep the object definite or known: Just as in other 把 sentences, the object after 把 should refer to something specific in the context (such as 你的计划 or 桌上的练习本), rather than an unspecified item.

- Choose volitional action verbs that can affect the object: Verbs of everyday handling and adjustment (such as 改, 收, 洗, 算, 说, 整理, 收拾) fit naturally. Non-action verbs or verbs of pure mental state (such as 知道 or 觉得) do not reduplicate in this pattern.

- Distinguish V + 了 + V from simple Verb + 了: In V + 了 + V (such as 把数字算了算), the verb itself is repeated to emphasize that the calculation was done briefly or as a quick check, whereas a single verb followed by 了 simply marks the completion or disposal of the action without the 'briefly / a little' nuance.

Quick check: If you are giving a polite instruction about a specific object, ask yourself whether the verb is one syllable or two. For a one-syllable verb, V + V or V + 一 + V both work smoothly; for a two-syllable verb, use ABAB direct repetition without 一.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is there a big difference in meaning between V + V and V + 一 + V in a 把 sentence?**

For a one-syllable verb, V + V and V + 一 + V often have similar limited-action meanings. For a two-syllable verb such as 收拾, use ABAB in a request, not AB一AB. When reporting a realized action, AB了AB is also possible: 收拾了收拾. Context and tone still affect how polite or casual the utterance sounds.

**When should I use V + 了 + V instead of V + 一 + V?**

V + V or V + 一 + V is a useful choice for requests, suggestions and plans. V + 了 + V explicitly marks the limited action as realized, so it is common in reports of what someone did. This contrast concerns aspect; do not use 了 as a mechanical English past-tense ending.

**Can any verb be reduplicated at the end of a 把 sentence?**

No. The verb must be an action verb that can both be reduplicated for a brief or casual action and logically handle or affect the object placed after 把. Stative verbs and non-volitional verbs do not fit this structure.
