# HSK 4 Grammar: Rhetorical Questions Formed with Interrogative Pronouns (由疑问代词构成的反问句)

Question words such as 谁, 什么, 怎么 and 哪儿 can form rhetorical questions that convey the speaker’s stance rather than request missing information. Common affirmative forms imply a negative answer and common negative forms imply an affirmative answer. Interpret the whole proposition, tone and context instead of reversing isolated negative words.

Topic / Context Clause 谁 / 哪个 Predicate Phrase （呢）？

Example sentence

这么简单的道理，谁不知道呢？

Zhème jiǎndān de dàolǐ, shuí bù zhīdào ne?

Such a simple truth, who doesn't know it? (Meaning: Everyone knows this simple truth.)

Uses 谁 with a negative predicate (不知道) to express a universal affirmative statement ('everyone knows').

A common mistake

× 这么简单的道理，谁不知道吗？

Zhème jiǎndān de dàolǐ, shuí bù zhīdào ma?

Intended: Such a simple truth, who doesn't know it?

For the intended independent rhetorical question “Who doesn’t know?”, replace 吗 with 呢 or omit it. This does not prohibit 吗 in a different structure with an embedded or non-interrogative question word.

Corrected example: 这么简单的道理，谁不知道呢？

## Core Concept: Asking to Assert the Opposite

Within the HSK 4 syllabus under sentence types (句类), rhetorical questions (反问句) include patterns built around interrogative pronouns (由疑问代词构成的反问句). Unlike a standard question that seeks an unknown answer, a rhetorical question uses interrogative form to express an emphatic statement that the speaker considers obvious.

Polarity reversal is a useful guide for many examples, not a mechanical rule for every question word. 谁愿意去？ can suggest that nobody in the relevant group wants to go; 谁不知道？ can suggest that everyone in that group knows. These are the speaker’s claims. Read the complete proposition and context, especially when negation occurs inside a longer phrase.

- Affirmative form with a question word -\> Emphatic negative statement (e.g., 'Who wants to go?' means 'Nobody wants to go.').

- Negative form with a question word -\> Emphatic affirmative statement (e.g., 'Who does not know?' means 'Everyone knows.').

- 呢 can add conversational emphasis to these direct wh-questions, or be omitted. Do not add 吗 to the same independent wh-question frame. This is about the question word’s role, not a ban on every sentence that contains both a question word and 吗.

## Using 谁 (shuí) and 哪个 (nǎge) for Universal Statements

When 谁 (shuí, who) or 哪个 (nǎge, which one) acts as the subject of a rhetorical question, it makes a sweeping claim about all people or members of a group. A topic clause or condition often precedes the question to establish why the answer is self-evident.

Topic / Context Clause 谁 / 哪个 Predicate Phrase （呢）？

这么简单的道理，谁不知道呢？

Zhème jiǎndān de dàolǐ, shuí bù zhīdào ne?

Such a simple truth, who doesn't know it? (Meaning: Everyone knows this simple truth.)

Uses 谁 with a negative predicate (不知道) to express a universal affirmative statement ('everyone knows').

如果工资这么低，谁愿意去那家公司工作？

Rúguǒ gōngzī zhème dī, shuí yuànyì qù nà jiā gōngsī gōngzuò?

If the salary is this low, who is willing to go work at that company? (Meaning: Nobody is willing to work there.)

Uses 谁 with an affirmative predicate (愿意去) to express a universal negative statement ('nobody is willing').

## Using 怎么 (zěnme) and 哪儿 (nǎr) for Strong Negation or Refusal

怎么 can challenge the possibility or reasonableness of a proposition, often before a modal such as 会 or 能. 哪儿/哪里 can similarly express denial, as in 哪儿有时间. They do not always negate the same meaning: 你怎么不来呢？ can urge the listener to come or express surprise that they did not come. Consider what the whole question challenges.

Subject 怎么 / 哪儿 Optional Modal Verb (会 / 能) Predicate Phrase （呢）？

我们认识十年了，我怎么会忘记你的生日呢？

Wǒmen rènshi shí nián le, wǒ zěnme huì wàngjì nǐ de shēngrì ne?

We have known each other for ten years; how could I forget your birthday? (Meaning: I would never forget your birthday.)

Uses 怎么 before the modal verb 会 to strongly deny the possibility of forgetting.

我今天忙得连饭都没吃，哪儿有时间看电影？

Wǒ jīntiān máng de lián fàn dōu méi chī, nǎr yǒu shíjiān kàn diànyǐng?

I'm so busy today I haven't even eaten; where would I get the time to watch a movie? (Meaning: I definitely have no time to watch a movie.)

Uses 哪儿 before 有 to negate the existence of free time.

Notice that in rhetorical questions, 哪儿 (nǎr) or 哪里 (nǎlǐ) usually loses its literal spatial meaning of 'where'. Instead, it functions as an emphatic negator equivalent to 怎么会 (how could) or 根本没有 (do not have at all).

## Using 什么 (shénme) to Dismiss Value or Necessity

When 什么 (shénme, what) modifies an object noun or appears in frames like 有什么好……的 (yǒu shénme hǎo... de, what is there worth...-ing), it dismisses the action or feeling as unnecessary, pointless, or unwarranted. In direct speech, a short verb + 什么 pattern (such as 急什么 'what are you rushing for?') can sound blunt or impatient, whereas longer structures with 有什么 are widely used to reassure or persuade.

Subject Verb 什么 Optional Object Noun / Phrase ？

大家都准备得这么充分了，还有什么好担心的？

Dàjiā dōu zhǔnbèi de zhème chōngfèn le, hái yǒu shénme hǎo dānxīn de?

Everyone has prepared so thoroughly; what is there left to worry about? (Meaning: There is nothing left to worry about.)

Uses 什么 in the frame 还有什么好……的 to reassure the listener that worrying is unnecessary.

## Contrasts and Common Learner Pitfalls

These forms can share the word order of genuine wh-questions. The speaker’s purpose, context and tone distinguish an inquiry from a rhetorical assertion. 请问 often introduces a polite inquiry, but it does not guarantee one: 请问，谁允许你这么干的？ can be a reproach. In the office example below, the speaker really wants to locate someone who knows the office.

请问，谁知道王经理的办公室在哪儿？

Qǐngwèn, shuí zhīdào Wáng jīnglǐ de bàngōngshì zài nǎr?

Excuse me, who knows where Manager Wang's office is?

Contrast example: With 请问 and an information-seeking context, 谁 asks a genuine question rather than making a rhetorical assertion.

For the independent rhetorical question 谁不知道？, use 呢 or no final particle, rather than adding 吗. By contrast, 你知道他是谁吗？ is natural: 谁 belongs to an embedded question, while 吗 asks whether you know. 什么 can also have a non-question use. Judge the structure and the intended question, not the mere presence of a character.

- Pragmatic impact: Rhetorical questions carry stronger emotion—such as reassurance, defence, surprise, or mild impatience—than plain declarative sentences with 都 (all) or 不 (not).

- Punctuation: In written Chinese, these sentences usually end with a question mark (？), or occasionally an exclamation mark (！) or combined mark (？！) when the emotional force is very strong.

## Frequently asked questions

**Should I answer when someone asks me a rhetorical question with 谁 or 怎么?**

You do not need to supply literal information for the question word, because the speaker is making a statement. In conversation, listeners normally respond to the underlying statement—for example, by agreeing ('That's true') or acknowledging the speaker's reassurance.

**Is there a difference between 怎么 (zěnme) and 哪儿 (nǎr) in rhetorical questions?**

In examples such as 怎么会忘记？ and 哪儿有时间？, both can support a strong denial. 怎么 often challenges possibility or justification; 哪儿 often denies the availability of a resource or the existence of a situation. Do not replace them mechanically: 怎么不告诉我？ may instead imply “You should have told me”. The complete predicate and context determine the stance.

**Are rhetorical questions with question words rude?**

Not inherently. When used to comfort a friend (such as 'How could I forget your birthday?' or 'What is there to worry about?'), they sound warm and reassuring. However, when used to criticize or dismiss someone's action (such as 'What are you crying for?'), they can sound impatient or confrontational.
