# HSK 4 Dedicated Nominal Measure Words: 打, 袋, 棵, 台, and 幅

Chinese counting phrases commonly pair a numeral or demonstrative with a suitable classifier. This HSK 4 outline item groups 打、袋、棵、台 and 幅. Learn their familiar collocations for dozens, bags, plants, machines or shows, and visual works rather than choosing by shape alone.

Numeral 打 / 袋 / 棵 / 台 / 幅 Noun

Example sentence

妈妈去超市买了一打鸡蛋。

Māma qù chāoshì mǎi le yī dá jīdàn.

Mom went to the supermarket and bought a dozen eggs.

打 (dá) groups twelve identical items together as a single retail unit.

A common mistake

× 学校门口种着三台大树。

Xuéxiào ménkǒu zhòng zhe sān tái dàshù.

Intended: Three big trees are planted at the school gate.

Here 大树 means ordinary trees planted at the gate, so use 棵 rather than the device/show classifier 台. The next example changes only the classifier; the number, trees and location stay the same.

Corrected example: 学校门口种着三棵大树。

## Core Concept and Sentence Structure

Nominal measure words (名量词) classify nouns according to their nature, shape, or grouping. In the Level 4 syllabus of the supplied HSK outline, five dedicated nominal measure words (专用名量词) are grouped together: 打, 袋, 棵, 台, and 幅. While beginners often rely on the general classifier 个 in casual speech, natural intermediate Chinese requires pairing specific nouns with their dedicated measure words.

Numeral 打 / 袋 / 棵 / 台 / 幅 Noun

Demonstrative （ Numeral ） Measure Word Noun

Grammatically, these five words occupy the standard classifier position directly before the noun (or before an adjective + noun phrase). They follow numerals like 一, 两, or 几, as well as demonstratives like 这 (this), 那 (that), and 哪 (which). When a demonstrative is used without a number, the number 一 (one) is understood.

## Grouping and Packaging: 打 (dá) and 袋 (dài)

Although the syllabus lists all five items under dedicated nominal measure words, 打 and 袋 function by grouping items into a fixed quantity or a flexible container rather than describing an inherent physical shape.

- 打 (dá): Means 'a dozen' (exactly twelve of the same item). Pay special attention to its pronunciation: as a measure word, it is pronounced dá in the second tone, not dǎ (third tone, meaning 'to hit'). It is commonly used for retail items sold in sets of twelve, such as eggs, pencils, socks, or bottles of beer.

- 袋 (dài): Means 'a bag, sack, pouch, or packet of'. Originating from the noun 袋子 (bag), it measures anything held inside a flexible sack or plastic bag, such as flour, rice, milk powder, apples, or cement.

妈妈去超市买了一打鸡蛋。

Māma qù chāoshì mǎi le yī dá jīdàn.

Mom went to the supermarket and bought a dozen eggs.

打 (dá) groups twelve identical items together as a single retail unit.

厨房的桌子上放着两袋面粉。

Chúfáng de zhuōzi shàng fàng zhe liǎng dài miànfěn.

There are two bags of flour on the kitchen table.

袋 (dài) measures loose or powdered goods held inside a sack or bag.

## Plants and Machinery: 棵 (kē) and 台 (tái)

棵 is a natural classifier for an individual plant, and 台 for many devices. Learn 一棵树 and 一台电脑 as clear models. Classifier choice follows established usage; it is not solely a test of whether an object is alive or has a mechanical base.

- 棵 counts individual plants: 一棵树、一棵白菜、一棵枯树. A plant need not still be alive or rooted in soil. For a blossom use 朵; for a flower counted by its stem, 枝 or 支 can fit. These count different aspects of the plant.

- 台 is common with machines and devices such as computers, televisions and washing machines; size or a desk base is not a requirement. It also counts an entire stage presentation, as in 一台晚会. Learn the individual collocation rather than treating these examples as an exhaustive list.

院子里有几棵很高的老树。

Yuànzi lǐ yǒu jǐ kē hěn gāo de lǎoshù.

There are several tall old trees in the courtyard.

棵 counts the trees here as individual plants.

这台新电脑的运行速度非常快。

Zhè tái xīn diànnǎo de yùnxíng sùdù fēicháng kuài.

This new computer runs very fast.

台 (tái) pairs directly with demonstrative 这 to specify an electronic machine.

昨晚我们一起看了一台精彩的京剧。

Zuówǎn wǒmen yīqǐ kàn le yī tái jīngcǎi de jīngjù.

Last night we watched a wonderful Beijing opera performance together.

台 (tái) can also measure a full stage show or theatrical performance.

## Artworks and Flat Textiles: 幅 (fú)

幅 is common with paintings, maps, calligraphy works, banners and some pieces of cloth. It often treats the item as a complete visual piece or spread. A physical frame and artistic value are not requirements: a map or diagram can also use 幅.

客厅的墙上挂着一幅中国画。

Kètīng de qiáng shàng guà zhe yī fú Zhōngguóhuà.

A Chinese painting is hanging on the living room wall.

幅 counts the painting as a whole visual work; a physical frame is not required.

张 is familiar with paper, tickets and photos; 幅 is familiar with paintings and maps. 一张画 and 一幅画 can both be valid, including in writing. Their choice depends on the object, collocation and intended view of it, rather than a rule that 张 is always casual or less correct.

## Common Learner Mistakes and Boundaries

Watch for characters with similar shapes or sounds. 棵 and 颗 share the reading kē, while 幅 fú and 副 fù have different tones. Classifier choice should fit the noun and intended meaning.

- 棵 (kē) vs. 颗 (kē): Notice the radicals. 棵 has the wood radical (木) and is strictly for plants and trees. 颗 has the page/head radical (页) and is for small, round, pearl-like objects such as beans, pearls, teeth, or stars.

- 幅 (fú) vs. 副 (fù): 幅 has the cloth radical (巾) and measures single flat artworks or maps. 副 (fourth tone) measures matched pairs or sets, such as glasses (一副眼镜) or gloves (一副手套), as well as facial expressions (一副笑脸).

- Category mismatch: Using a machine classifier like 台 for living plants is a clear category error.

学校门口种着三棵大树。

Xuéxiào ménkǒu zhòng zhe sān kē dàshù.

Three big trees are planted at the school gate.

棵 counts the three trees as individual plants.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is 打 pronounced dá in the second tone when used as a measure word?**

打 is read dá when it means “dozen”, twelve items. This is a separate lexical reading from dǎ “hit/play”; do not derive it from the third-tone pronunciation of the verb.

**Can I use 台 (tái) for a mobile phone?**

Yes. Both 一台手机 and 一部手机 are used. 一部手机 and 一台电脑 are useful familiar models to learn. Choose the classifier according to the noun and context.

**Can I just use 个 instead of 棵, 台, or 幅?**

Use familiar combinations such as 一棵树、一台电脑 and 一幅画. 个 can replace some classifiers in context, but it is not a universal substitute; 一个树 is not the ordinary model for counting a tree. Learn the noun’s collocations instead of applying one broad rule to every classifier.
