# Using 要是……，就…… for Hypothetical Situations

Use 要是……，就…… to present a possible or imagined condition and say what follows if it is true. Learn the clause order, when 就 may be omitted, and how this pattern differs from an open question or a general rule.

要是 Condition clause ，（主语）就 Predicate of the result clause 。

Example sentence

要是你提前告诉我，我就能安排好时间。

Yàoshi nǐ tíqián gàosu wǒ, wǒ jiù néng ānpái hǎo shíjiān.

If you let me know in advance, I can arrange my time.

A possible action by the listener leads to a practical result for the speaker.

## Meaning: condition and result

要是……，就…… introduces a condition and the result that would follow if that condition holds. 要是 means “if” or “supposing that”; 就 connects the condition to its consequence, often with the sense “then.” The speaker treats the condition as possible, uncertain, or imagined. The pattern does not by itself say that the condition is likely, or that the result has already happened. Context supplies that information.

This pattern is useful when making a plan that depends on something uncertain: a change in the weather, a missing document, or another person’s decision. It can also make a suggestion sound considerate because the speaker states a possible condition before proposing what to do. Keep the focus on this condition-and-result relationship; a sentence with the same conjunctions can still express different practical intentions depending on context.

## Build the two clauses

要是 Condition clause ，（主语）就 Predicate of the result clause 。

- 要是 can precede the condition’s subject or follow a shared topic: 要是你有空… and 你要是有空…. Choose a clear condition-first sentence while learning.

- When the result clause has an explicit subject, place 就 after that subject: 我们就改在室内见面. Do not mechanically put 就 before a full clause beginning with its own subject.

- Conversation can append a condition as an afterthought: 我们改在室内见面吧，要是明天下雨的话. The final 要是…的话 phrase limits the preceding proposal. This is not a mechanical reversal of every condition-first sentence, and deleting all conditional marking can lose the intended relation.

- Use ordinary clause word order inside each clause. Do not place 就 inside the condition clause when it is linking the condition to its result.

The outline gives the pattern with 就. In ordinary usage, 就 is often omitted when the relationship is already clear, especially in a short sentence. Including it makes the consequence easier to recognize and is a useful default while learning the pattern. This lesson focuses on 要是……，就……; other conditional or hypothetical patterns are outside this point.

## Choose a result that fits the condition

要是明天下雨，我们就改在室内见面。

Yàoshi míngtiān xiàyǔ, wǒmen jiù gǎi zài shìnèi jiànmiàn.

If it rains tomorrow, we’ll change the meeting to an indoor location.

The result clause gives a plan that depends on tomorrow’s weather.

要是这份文件还没准备好，我就先发你已经确认的部分。

Yàoshi zhè fèn wénjiàn hái méi zhǔnbèi hǎo, wǒ jiù xiān fā nǐ yǐjīng quèrèn de bùfen.

If this document isn’t ready yet, I’ll send you the part that has already been confirmed first.

The condition is not certain; the speaker offers a reasonable alternative.

In the weather example, the result is a practical change of plan. In the document example, the speaker offers a partial solution rather than waiting for everything to be ready. A useful test is to ask: “If the first clause is true, what will happen or what will I do?” The second clause should answer that question in a way that makes sense in the situation.

## Questions, proposals, and useful contrasts

要是你觉得这个安排不合适，我们就再商量一下，好吗？

Yàoshi nǐ juéde zhège ānpái bù héshì, wǒmen jiù zài shāngliang yíxià, hǎo ma?

If you think this arrangement isn’t suitable, shall we discuss it again?

好吗？ invites agreement with the proposed next step.

The condition-result relationship works in questions too. Here, the speaker proposes another discussion if the listener finds the plan unsuitable, then adds 好吗？ to invite agreement. The sentence is not asking whether the condition is true in a purely factual way; it uses a question to negotiate a possible next step. A neutral question can instead ask what the result would be, such as “If it rains tomorrow, where will we meet?” The condition stays in the first clause while the result clause becomes a question.

The pattern can describe a particular possibility or a regular conditional relationship; it does not by itself specify how often the consequence occurs. Also distinguish “if” from “only if”: 要是坐地铁，就能到那儿 gives taking the subway as a sufficient way to get there. 只有坐地铁才能到那儿 presents it as necessary, ruling out other ways in that context. Do not silently turn the first statement into the second.

## Check your sentence before using it

- Name a condition that is possible or being considered.

- Decide what would happen, what you would do, or what you propose if it holds.

- Place 要是 before the condition and usually 就 before the result.

- Read the complete sentence aloud and check that the result logically fits the condition. For a question or proposal, make sure the question ending matches your intention.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does 要是……，就…… mean the condition is unlikely?**

No. It presents a condition as possible or imagined, but does not tell you how likely it is. Context may show whether the speaker thinks it is likely.

**Can I leave out 就?**

就 is often omitted when the condition-result link is already clear. The outline’s stated form includes 就, so include it when you want to make the result link explicit, especially while learning.

**Can the condition come second?**

In conversation it can be added as an afterthought, for example 我们改在室内见面吧，要是明天下雨的话. Keep enough conditional wording for the restriction to remain clear. Condition first is the default pattern taught here, not a rule to reverse mechanically.
